How did we get to the point where we have a Home Secretary who believes in the death penalty?

I can't be the only one to think this about her. She's also an awful person because she's happy to be the brown face fronting racist policies so people think it can't be so bad...a daughter of immigrants agrees with all this....🙄

She was also forced to resign after unofficial meetings with the Israeli government and yet Boris brought her back and made her Home Secretary 🤦‍♀️

It's only in the last 5 years that the percentage of the public who oppose the death penalty outnumber those who support it. Not so surprising.

AKissAndASmile · 16/06/2020 19:41

Really?! Wow!
Where did you read that statistic @MrFaceyRomford?

I think we should have sentences where life means life, but don't believe in the death penalty. Happy to hear other people's thoughts.

I think the majority of people would support the death penalty for the likes of Ian Huntley

Many brown people (and black people) support the Conservative Party are they all meant to support Labour

DippyAvocado · 16/06/2020 19:46

I think it seems entirely in keeping with the rest of her character. Luckily it's not something she has the power to change on her own.

RubyFakeLips · 16/06/2020 19:49

I remember this episode of QT was with Mumsnet's Justine too.

I don't think anyone there but Priti had that agenda and I can't imagine this will ever actually change.

Made herself look a total fool wheeling out the deterrent argument.

AnnaSW1 · 16/06/2020 19:58

I'm more bothered by the fact she bullies her staff

Rory786 · 16/06/2020 20:40

Priti Patel...Dominic Cummings they all make pretty major mistakes but there are no consequences. Its sickening

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 16/06/2020 21:07

I'm no lover of Priti Patel but If she is for the Death Penalty that's up to her.
Many people are.
I'm personally against it, because As some would say it 'bails people out'. Death is death, you die. You know where you stand.
I'd rather the likes of child killers grow very old be kept here and left to rot and suffer immensely.

AKissAndASmile · 16/06/2020 21:27

I'm just surprised that people are happy for her to be the the Home Secretary with her views. From the silence on this thread it is obvious that this is the case on Mumsnet at least, so I will bow out to the majority's opinion.

There has been a number or threads of PP

I didn’t see any outrage on the racist cartoon in The Guardian that they felt was appropriate and refused to withdraw it even after she herself said she felt it was racist

I don’t agree with her politics but she has the drive that many like to see in a politician regardless of reports of bullying not just for more right wing voters. Wouldn't surprise me if she was put forward to be party leader at some point. Like her heroine she doesn’t come from a traditional Tory leader background

winterisstillcoming · 16/06/2020 21:52

Agree. It's and outdated view. Murdering someone is so wrong that I'm going to murder you. Yeah that works Confused

Sandybval · 16/06/2020 21:55

In 2019 a poll was published saying that a third of Conservative MPs were for capital punishment. Are you going to start a thread on all of those, or just PP as she's a woman?

Sandybval · 16/06/2020 21:56

And there are also plenty of threads on here already for you to froth on. Male MPs do get some scorn, but she has had next level amounts on here, I wonder why.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 16/06/2020 21:59

Well she doesn’t fit the idea of how an Asian woman should be for some liberals ...

MaleficentsCrow · 16/06/2020 22:05

If capital punishment worked, people wouldn't murder people in the USA where the death penalty exists.

It doesn't work, it's not a deterant to this crime.

Life sentences are life. They serve a custodial tariff and then they are released on license till they die if the parole board allow it. All under MAPPA with probation, and PPU managing them. They have exclusion zones and disclosures are made about them to any landlord or employer.

It's cheaper for the tax payer to have them on UC and managed in the community than pay for them to be in prison for life. They don't really get a life anyway. They are watched till the day they die, the only difference is they tend to be in a local authority flat on UC all day than in a cell.

I've known lifers deliberately breach their license such as shoplifting to just go back in, because it's easier. You also don't get many who murder and then go on to murder again in the UK, because the rehabilitation of lifers in prison is good for murder. A lot of money goes in to it, they engage with their OM courses. If they don't they don't ge parole, so then would spend life in prison.
