34 Month Old's development

Hi All,

This is a strange question to ask but is anyone else's child obsessed with numbers? Our 34 month old is so obsessed with numbers that he talks of sextillions (from a YT video of numbers he watches), which I dont mind, but he also chants numbers to himself all the time, counting in 100s and 1000s and talks over you incessantly.

We don't think he is autistic and I love that he seems to be clever but the constant obsession can be annoying. He loves the alphabet too and can recite it backwards but it's numbers he seems to always talk about, even in his sleep sometimes.

Almost 3? This is totally normal. I'd personally get him on numberblocks and alphablocks from cebeebies rather than stuff on YouTube (break the habit before it starts)

They take in and repeat everything at that age

He loves Numberblocks (Alpha not so much) and does watch it but he seems to want bigger numbers.

34 month old? I personally feel referring colloquially to children's ages in months is a bit odd after 2 (years!).

You're right that he's 'chanting', not counting in the real sense of the word. It's great that numbers have engaged his imagination - enjoy it as one of the weird and wonderful things that children get caught up with.

Basically he's not 3 yet, that's all I was saying, I wouldn't normally refer to him in months. It feels more than just chanting, he really wants to talk about numbers, very focused.

Stop trying to label him. It's perfectly normal. Wait until he forgets all about numbers and becomes obsessed with poo....in around 46 months time Wink

He'll enjoy Team Umizoomi

Yes. I have one like this too. Smile

It's not that unusual, Wilko. He obviously has a talent for numbers and that is to be encouraged as long as he interested in other things - reading, writing, music for example.
