Does anyone buy canned sparkling water?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 16/06/2020 18:20

If so, where from?

Sparkling water is the only way of getting the right amount of water each day. Still water just doesn't interest me. I sit with glasses/bottles of tap water in front of me and am just not inclined to drink it.

Barring a Soda Stream (which I will ask for as a Christmas present) - how can I do better environmentally?

I'd like to buy cans of sparkling water (unflavoured) but the only ones I can find are on Amazon and cost £££ in comparison with the bottled versions I grab from Aldi.

Why isn't there a cheap option that won't fill landfill? I'm finding myself reusing the plastic bottles for the kids or just normal tap water but there's only so many I can reuse.

Help!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 16/06/2020 18:32

Tonic doesn't taste like sparkling water though.

Tonic water has a lot of empty calories. I would avoid that.

ATowelAndAPotato · 16/06/2020 18:36

Waitrose also stock a multipack of canned Perrier water. Haven’t seen it elsewhere. It’s only a small pack (6/8) and quite expensive compare to generic sparking water in a plastic bottle, but depends on your reason for preferring canned over bottles”d.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 16/06/2020 18:41

Soda water isn't quite sparkling water though, it has additives.

Cans over bottles because I assume they are better and easier to recycle? I may be wrong. I certainly don't want to add to the demand of producing plastic bottles.

Tescos sometimes does the tinned perrier

Glowcat · 16/06/2020 19:09

You aren’t due a new fridge are you? You can get ones that dispense sparkling water.

RubyFakeLips · 16/06/2020 19:11

You can get sparkling water taps. Will filter and then carbonate your tap water, same sort of thing as a hot tap. Bit of an investment but probably not hugely more expensive than buying the cans regularly.

TheHighestSardine · 16/06/2020 19:12

You'll spend more on cans by Christmas than if you get a Soda Stream now. Do it.

RedRed9 · 16/06/2020 19:16

Still water just doesn't interest me. I sit with glasses/bottles of tap water in front of me and am just not inclined to drink it.

I’m similar. What I do instead is stand at the tap and quickly pour and drink a glass of water. Down quick in one go. That technique might help you drink more water while you’re waiting on your soda stream.

omg35 · 16/06/2020 19:20

If you don't mind flavoured water, Tesco's do tins by a company called Sisters. Guava and lime is delicious!

DianaT1969 · 16/06/2020 19:24

Soda Stream starter pack of 1 machine, 1 bottle, 1 cylinder is £50 now. Down from £99. It is ridiculous how expensive they are when most working class families (including us) could afford them easily in the 70s. There must be a big mark up. They ought to have a VAT exemption as they help the environment.

fluckityfluckfluck · 16/06/2020 19:26

I drink lots of bottled sparkling water. Plastic bottles. I recycle and I compost everything I can - I'm okay with it : ) I see it as being offset by other efforts I make

poshme · 16/06/2020 19:27

Get a soda stream.
I love mine. I drink so much more water having got it

Discoballs · 16/06/2020 19:35

What about glass bottles? You can get them from our local Turkish store. It's called Sarikiz and it's lovely.

puppypeach · 16/06/2020 19:36

You can get san Pellegrino in glass bottles! I'm sure I've got them in Waitrose

JustSew · 16/06/2020 19:44

Don't wait until Christmas to get your sodastream. Best thing I ever bought. I used to buy lots of bottled fizzy water until I bought my sodastream two years ago. Its brilliant, I always have a bottle of fizzy water in the fridge and use it as a mixer with nice cordial. You can make it super fizzy as well.

JustSew · 16/06/2020 19:46

As to cost, add up what you spend on bottled fizz. No more plastic bottles either, which don't disappear just because you put them in the recycling.

Jumblebumblemess · 16/06/2020 19:47

Can O Water. They do still and sparking and available at most supermarkets. They also do resealable cans.

reluctantbrit · 16/06/2020 19:51

Cans are ridiculous expensive for what they are. I am with you, I don’t trink still water unless I am reallly thirsty and it is ice cold and nothing else is available.

We bought an Aark water carbonator last year and while I do think we didn’t save lots of money by getting the cartridges instead of plastic bottles our plastic rubbish has decreased by 2/3. So worth it. I also have a 750ml Chilly style bottle which can hold the sparkling water for work and suddenly drunk a lot more

Soda Stream is cheaper and with the warmer weather coming I would say get it now if you can,

Littlebyerockerboo · 16/06/2020 19:54

Oh my gosh, no help here op - but i get milk from milk & more in glass bottles, and i order my fizzy water in glass bottles from them too - it costs £1.30-or something along those lines! It makes me so mad as I'm trying to do my bit and buy less plastic, but the expense! Bottled fizzy water in supermarket is 17p in comparison! 17p!!!!!!
So does a soda stream make fizzy water?
I always thought it was a junk-food-type device *face palm

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 16/06/2020 20:16

DianaT1969

It's the initial outlay I'm concerned about. How long does a canister last?

Fizzy water 17p. One a day, just over a quid a week

i thought fizzy water is supposed to be unhealthy, bad for one's bones, i think i read.
i used to like a little occasionally, but since i've read that, several times, i've avoided it.
any medics/ scientists can explain it please ?

I think you get confused with sodas in fizzy drinks like coke, lemonade etc, the reason is the acid in these drinks.

Sparkling water made with a soda stream or other carbonator is just tap water with CO2 added via a cartridge. With soda stream you can add flavours, we have a different system and only use plain water and the odd slice of lemon.

If sparkling water would be bad the whole of Germany would be dead, they live on that stuff. We don’t actual have a word for still water, if you order water in a restaurant you get sparking as the default version.
