Does anyone buy canned sparkling water?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 16/06/2020 18:20

If so, where from?

Sparkling water is the only way of getting the right amount of water each day. Still water just doesn't interest me. I sit with glasses/bottles of tap water in front of me and am just not inclined to drink it.

Barring a Soda Stream (which I will ask for as a Christmas present) - how can I do better environmentally?

I'd like to buy cans of sparkling water (unflavoured) but the only ones I can find are on Amazon and cost £££ in comparison with the bottled versions I grab from Aldi.

Why isn't there a cheap option that won't fill landfill? I'm finding myself reusing the plastic bottles for the kids or just normal tap water but there's only so many I can reuse.

Help!

@DianaT1969 where did you see the kit for £50? I've been considering buying one but can't find it that cheap.

DianaT1969 · 16/06/2020 21:37

I bought it as a result of this thread. Official Soda Stream site UK. Genesis model £50.

1 gas canister lasts for 60 litres. My local supermarkets sell sparkling water for around 50p a bottle. I buy 1-2 per week, but I hate contributing to the single use plastic problem. Feel much happier now and will probably drink more now that I don't have to carry bottles home.

Personally can’t bear the taste of sparkling water - prefer from the tap. but buy the soda stream. The rest of my family use it a lot and it has massively reduced the amount of plastic waste. I’m afraid I’m too much of a skinflint to pay for water when i can get it for free.

I love San Pellegrino Essenz
www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/304785072
Often on offer in Tesco

Is2020OverYet · 16/06/2020 21:50

I buy sparkling water in glass bottles. Either San Pellagrino or LlanllÅ·r. San Pellagrino glass bottles are sold in Tesco.

Muppetry76 · 16/06/2020 22:21

I saw cans of sparkling water in ikea today. In the fridge by the hot dog bit right at the end. As I was queuing I wondered who might buy tinned fizzy water rather than bottled Wink

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 16/06/2020 22:30

Oooh ikea!

I have been considering getting a soda stream for a while but put because I am not sure about the cost or getting refills , where can you buy / exchange them ?

MaverickDanger · 16/06/2020 22:34

I adore my Sodastream.

We buy the canisters online and they have a £10 deposit which is returned when you return the empty canisters via CollectPlus.

We drink a few litres a week, and I reckon we use 2-3 canisters a year. It’s proved a bargain for us.

ColonelNobbyNobbs · 16/06/2020 22:35

I get my refills in Argos - think they are about 12 or 15 quid if you exchange your empty canister. They last a good while but I suppose if you drink a litre a day that’s two months?

ThatDreamSheep · 16/06/2020 22:39

I just typed into Google 'sparkling water cans' and it came up with a link for a fridge pack of Perrier cans from Sainsbury's if that's any help

Ontheboardwalk · 16/06/2020 22:40

I got a soda stream machine when Ocado stopped delivering bottled water and love it

The one canister lasted me 3 months drinking it every day. I also feel less guilty having lots of plastic bottles in my recycling bin

You can’t exchange them at the moment but that should start again soon

TheTeenageYears · 17/06/2020 04:51

OP this is slightly away from your original ask but have you tried still water at different temperatures? There's a world of difference between a glass of water as it cones out of the tap and one from the fridge with ice as well. I find in the heat I can drink so much more water when it's fridge cold plus ice and when i'm cold boiling hot water with a dash of cold in. I have Thermos drink bottles which are for hot or cold when out and often use at hone for cold as it doesn't condensate and keeps the ice water really cold.

What is the 'right' amount of water meant to be anyway, and why do you feel so compelled to drink it?

The advise is "8 glasses, 2l of water", it is water to avoid having people drinking 2l of fizzy drinks each day.

It is only half the truth so. All liquids count, so tea, coffee, juice and also there is liquid in food. If you eat very soft fruit you will add to your intake as well, similar to soup.

I drink lots of diluted juice, coming from Germany, "Schorle" (mix of juice and sparkling water, is the standard drink and we do it at home. Mostly with apple juice in a 1/5 to 4/5 mix. DH and DD will drink sparkling water on their own by the liter, we go through 2-3l of sparkling water a day now with the lockdown and the three of us being at home.

Here's a summary of the health concerns that have been raised, including acidity, which I had also heard. Interestingly (because I love it) - it reports it as safe www.healthline.com/nutrition/carbonated-water-good-or-bad#bottom-line

we have gone through this dilemma and get fizzy water in glass bottles, although since lockdown, they almost always get substituted for plastic and we have to send them back. Agree with previous poster that the Turkish shop is a good place to get glass bottles - depends if you live near a Turkish shop.
If you are the sort of person who has ethical concerns, soda stream may not be the answer, as I think that Soda Stream is an Israeli company with a poor human rights record - my info is vague, so I apologise, but it's worth looking up to see if that is the case.

GherkinsOnToast · 17/06/2020 08:15

Our Morrisons sell it in the sandwich section.

That’s why we went with Aarke a Swedish company, and use Grohe canister.

There are alternatives to SodaStream out there. The reports on SodaStream vary, as usual, depending what you read and esp. how old the article is.

grannycake · 17/06/2020 08:33

I have a sodastream - the basic model. A canister lasts me 1 month and I drink 2 litres a day. Its not cheaper than plastic bottles but its cheaper than any other option

Alwayscheerful · 17/06/2020 08:38

San Pellegrino sparkling water in multi packs, glass bottles from supermarket or cash and carry. Bit heavy to pop in your handbag but glass can be recycled.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/06/2020 08:48

I know we're supposed to be avoiding plastic, but recycling of both glass and aluminium is very energy intensive.

I wonder which is really best, properly recycled plastic, aluminium or glass? Is plastic still a problem if it is recycled and doesn't end up in the sea?

I've been idly wondering about getting a soda stream (or an old fashioned soda syphon) because I like the occasional fizzy water and I could make tonic for my gin.

But initial research suggests that it's a very expensive way to do it, unless you normally drink absolutely loads - I might buy one or two six packs of 500 ml fizzy water bottles a year and maybe one litre bottle of tonic a week - I used to get the six packs of cans from Waitrose, but they seem to have stopped doing them, so now I'm buying the 1 litre plastic bottles, which works out much cheaper anyway, even if you throw away half the tonic because it has gone flat.

But the reviews of the tonic syrups are not good, I've not been able to find out if they have artificial sweeteners in, which I absolutely detest, and they are very expensive.

To be honest, I think I'll be sticking to the plastic, or at least looking out for canned alternatives - perhaps I should email Waitrose to find out why I can't get my tonic cans any more. I don't want to buy other brands of tonic, because they either have artificial sweeteners in, a lot more sugar, or are far more expensive.

MerryDeath · 17/06/2020 08:48

wow a lot of people don't get that sparkling water does not equal tonic, or soda, or flavoured water.

I'm personally absolutely addicted to sparkling water, i actually don't want sugar/sweeteners in my water believe it or not! I'm currently facing the same problem. I'm not interested in a soda stream i think they are wasteful and expensive in other ways. i found something else on amazon which looked slightly better, a soda siphon. but i think I'm going to rig up some sort of home brew/low tech carbonation system when i get round to it. i've got space for that kind of gubbins though.

SorrelBlackbeak · 17/06/2020 09:04

@BarbaraofSeville I bought 6 cans of tonic water from Waitrose last week so they're definitely still doing them!
