CCTV pointing to child’s bedroom

Tina2705 · 14/06/2020 21:34

My neighbour has put a CCTV camera on a flat roof which is pointing to my 9 year old daughter’s bedroom. The police came and said they cannot do anything as on his monitor the window is blocked. We all know how easy it is to just change the settings but the police think he will not do it....

Have you spoken to your neighbour and explained your concerns? If so what did he say? (Or do we now get a drip feed to say he's a 7ft, steroid-pumped, axe-weilding drug dealer that you can't possibly speak to?). Maybe he can show you exactly what can be seen from the camera that could put your mind at rest?

From what I can see from the photos, the camera is too far away and at the wrong height to show footage of inside your daughter's bedroom. It may catch the window on the periphery of it's scope, but I doubt it will show any more unless your daughter hangs out of her window? The quality of the video is likely to be quite poor from that distance too.

It’s pointing down, isn’t it?

TheCanterburyWhales · 16/06/2020 10:51

I'm not seeing an alleyway because we can't see what the camera is pointing at because it's at a 90 degree angle to where the photo is taken from.
If the photo is taken from the bedroom (which is most logical as that is where the OP is worried about) it's much lower down and couldn't remotely see in it. If the bedroom is in direct line of the CCTV (ie under the skylight) I don't understand why the OP has taken the photo from where she has as an illustration.

Is the skylight/roof your’s or the neighbour’s? I assumed the roof was yours before, but it might not be, so you might not be able to screen it off.

DjMomo · 16/06/2020 10:55

Put up a lace curtain on your child’s window. Then you can look out the window but nobody can look in. When it gets dark, then close the drapes.

ScrumptiousBears · 16/06/2020 10:58

You are exaggerating here a bit in my opinion.

Buy a halogen light and fit it to shine continuously or at the camera.

pinktaxi · 16/06/2020 12:05

Ignore the 'or'

TheCanterburyWhales · 16/06/2020 12:20

In which case he would be within his rights to complain.

Russell19 · 16/06/2020 12:21

@Shuttup

Shame them on social media? Tell all the neighbours? Send round a large DH to have a word? FFS, why not get the pitchfork out and start a baying mob while you're at it. Have a word with yourselves and get a grip.

The OP has given hardly any information about the setup and the pictures appear that the camera is pointing downwards. The OP also says that the neighbour has blocked any view of the window on the monitor and it's pretty clear that it would be nigh on impossible to see into the window from the angle of the camera.

Total overreaction.

Totally agree, can't believe some of the dramatic posts on here.
safariboot · 16/06/2020 15:07

So police have already responded and determined the neighbour is acting lawfully. Protecting privacy by electronically (rather than physically) blocking out areas of the image is acceptable in law.

It would be extremely malicious If you go making baseless accusations against this neighbour, or vandalising his property. He has almost certainly put the camera up to deter and catch burglars.

@BlueVinca

That's horrible. What do the police mean about the window being blocked?
@BlueVinca - on the recording software, you literally block off parts of the image. the screen gets divided into (say) a 5x4 grid. and you black out the top row so it either won;t be triggered by motion in that area, or will just put a bug black square on any recording.

we have the latter at work where security cameras that are recording traffic that enters site, it happen to have part of a house in view, couldn't be angled/positioned any other way with out compromising the angle for traffic - so that house is blocked off. any recordings have lovely black square across it!

BlueVinca · 16/06/2020 15:23

Thanks

00100001 · 16/06/2020 15:26

That camera is not pointing to your 9 year old daughter’s bedroom.

whatever makes you think it is??

Soontobe60 · 16/06/2020 23:35

There's no way that camera can see into the window you've had to hang out of to get the photo. Now stand at the window with it closed and take a photo. If you're still concerned, put a blind up!

LockedInMadness · 16/06/2020 23:54

I don't think OP is coming back, are you @Tina2705?

itchyfinger · 17/06/2020 06:54

There is barely any info from the OP on this thread, you cant tell what the camera is pointing at in that photo. Starting an online petition to regulate the law? What? What safeguarding team? So many questions....

kaldefotter · 17/06/2020 07:12

OP, you've opened the window, leaned out of it, and held the camera up at your head to get that photo.

Try standing at your daughter's height in the room, and looking toward the window. Can you see the camera?

If no, your daughter cannot see the camera, the camera cannot see your daughter, and you're making a big fuss about someone who is trying to protect his property.

Be careful now before you try trashing his reputation in the community.

Tina2705 · 29/06/2020 21:54

That’s what I need to do!!

Tina2705 · 29/06/2020 21:55

Safeguarding team wasn’t helpful

OP posts:
Tina2705 · 29/06/2020 21:58

I can stand in her room and easily see the camera.

OP posts:
Haretodaygonetomorrow · 29/06/2020 22:04

Have you asked to see the footage?
