Rishi Sunak on Andrew Marr

I always rated him. Always said he seemed honest (ok uses a few of the government lines!) but didn't white wash the situation.

Then Cummings happened and he came out in defence. Changed my mind!

But just watched him in Andrew Marr show.

He seems to be all over ALL the information - not just his area of expertise.

But what impressed me most is he said how good Witty and Vallance are. How they have countries interests and that if course science and medicine if their first priority.

He then - and this impressed me the most - said that the government are following the science because it's a pandemic but any decisions made are not Whitty and Vallances. They are not responsible . The government make decisions and they solely should be held to account.

Even said he believes what he's doing for economy is right but accepts his choice is a risk. And that if the risk doesn't pay off he it's him accountable.

Said Spads advise. We make decisions.

I really felt he was honest, truthful and also empathetic to the population.

He's restored my faith in him!

Did others get the same impression or did I miss something Wink

Yes, we've just watched him and both thought he came across very well, and we're not supporters of his party.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 14/06/2020 10:36

I never have been, and never will be a Tory voter but I agree with you op, I am really impressed with him. I feel like we get a more honest picture when he does the daily briefings and he seems much more open when answering the questions. Many of the others refuse to answer the question or just cut the journalist off. We should be seeing much more of him in my opinion.

Redcrayons · 14/06/2020 10:42

He comes over really well, he seems honest and sincere. I like that.
I wouldn’t vote for a Tory if you were paying me in gold bars though.

Missed this. Will get it on catch-up.
I really rate himSmile

MynephewR · 14/06/2020 10:51

I really like him, he just seems honest and genuine, he gives off the impression that he actually gives a shit about the people of this country.

Pepperwand · 14/06/2020 11:03

I rate him too, he comes across very well and seems like a nice guy. They aren't all idiots in the Tory party..... I always liked Rory Stewart as well.

Shmithecat2 · 14/06/2020 11:13

He brings a sense of calm in a very turbulent situation, and I think he has integrity. I like him.

highlandcoo · 14/06/2020 11:19

A future PM I think. And I have never been and pretty certain will never be a Tory voter.

I particularly respect his willingness to take responsibility for his decisions. There's been a fair bit of weaselly "We're following the science" attempts at blame-shifting by others.

SerendipityJane · 14/06/2020 11:21

Doesn't matter how good Sunak - or anyone else is - at the moment.

With Boris as PM, you aren't going to get anything resembling competent, and that's an end to that.

Medievalist · 14/06/2020 11:31

He's what you want in a pm - articulate, all over the detail, unfazed by any questions and generally very likeable (even if he is a Tory!). Though he did get a bit of an easy ride this morning. The old adage 'advisers advise; politicians decide' was an obvious response to the Whitty question.

He's got to be the Tories' main asset at the moment. And of course so many people are grateful to him for his multi billion pound rescue package. Despite his youth and relative inexperience, I think he'd be a shoe in if Boris went.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 14/06/2020 11:36

It's a shame he can't defect over to Labour.

I won't vote Tory. But I'd vote Sunak.

LaurieFairyCake · 14/06/2020 11:39

He said 'it's under review' a LOT

And like every politician didn't answer questions he didn't want to - what he said was shameful about the people who fall through the cracks - didn't even say we're still trying to do something about it

But out of the sorry shower he definitely comes off the best, he seems personally likeable Grin

TheHighestSardine · 14/06/2020 11:44

It's a shame he's totally under the whip.

itsgettingweird · 14/06/2020 11:44

Believe me! I'm no Tory either 😂

OP posts:
MashedPotatoBrainz · 14/06/2020 11:46

Doesn't really matter how clever with words he is or how well he comes across, he's still happily part of the most incompetent and corrupt government I've ever seen. Don't be taken in by his sheep's clothing, he still a wolf.

itsgettingweird · 14/06/2020 11:51

Yes I think I could see him as PM. He's believable for a start and I hope he isn't just better trained to talk in public and actually does believe in what he's saying.

I liked him when he explained what he meant by creative. That he knows some jobs will go and as those industries will remain limited during the pandemic he needs to make sure people get re training to take other jobs.

He seems to have a non Tory position of actually believing in the welfare state but balanced against expecting people to help themselves and opportunities.

And yes I agree he does appear to answer questions. Or least give it ago. He certainly appears to have learnt about what everyone's doing.

I also thought David Lammy was very good too.

We were spoilt for politicians this morning. Usually I end up cross and eye rolling Grin

Although I feel having said I'm no Tory supporter for full disclosure as I started the thread I have to admit even as a remainder I voted for this shit show as felt best of bad choice of leaders and I wanted Brexit gulf to end.

But I'm not a far lefty either. Always been pretty centric.

So it's nice to see complete non Tories (ever!) feel the same.

OP posts:
MashedPotatoBrainz · 14/06/2020 11:57

Judge him on his voting record:

www.theyworkforyou.com/mp/25428/rishi_sunak/richmond_%28yorks%29/votes

Voted against increased benefits for disabled people.

Voted against giving the right to remain to EU citizens already living in the UK

Generally votes against laws that promote human rights and equality.

Don't be taken in by his smooth talking.

Graphista · 14/06/2020 12:01

Wow! There's a lot of easily led people on this thread!

Pretty much anyone savvy enough and not too arrogant not to (which I suspect is the case with Johnson) to take the advice of the media trainers can come across well in a planned and prepared for interview.

Have those of you spouting about his "honesty" and "integrity" actually learned about his background? His personal opinions? Voting record? I very much doubt it!

He displayed dubious possibly even illegal behaviour during the banking crisis.

He's a thatcherite at heart and a brexiter.

Pretty consistently votes like a typical Tory - for increasing wealth for the already rich and undermining security and welfare for the poorest and least able to advocate for themselves.

He's just as slimy and self serving as the rest of his party!

Don't be fooled by a smooth exterior!

A pp mentioned rory stewart and we saw on here and elsewhere similar thoughts on him but he is also just as dyed in the wool blue Tory as Johnson and other less well liked Tories - some of them just disguise it well!

Graphista · 14/06/2020 12:03

He seems to have a non Tory position of actually believing in the welfare state

Before making such a claim (and yes I know you said "seems") go and look at his voting record - he's absolutely NOT a supporter of the welfare state inc the nhs

Redcrayons · 14/06/2020 12:05

Don't be fooled by a smooth exterior

Indeed, he is a Tory after all. But he comes over well in comparison to the a lot of the others. Which is admittedly, a low bar.

TheHighestSardine · 14/06/2020 12:13

This is the problem. Any vague semblance of competency is such a massive change from the Cummings/Johnson/Raab/Patel/Gove/Hancock/Truss/Shapps/Braverman/etc who are all such horrible incompetents elevated so far beyond their ability...

His voting record is standard Tory bland evil though. Take heed.

areyoubeingserviced · 14/06/2020 12:18

Agree that people should look at the voting records of politicians

The bar is set low when it comes to the current crop of government ministers, so anyone half decent comes across as ‘lovely’.

heaveneggs · 14/06/2020 12:43

I adore him! I have from day one! I hope and pray he is out next prime minister.

Graphista · 14/06/2020 13:11

Exactly - just because he comes across a lot better than other currently prominent tories is no excuse for being fooled into thinking he is anything but a typical Tory who cares nothing for the poorest, least well treated members of our society.

He's got a typical Tory education/childhood too.

Unless you are independently wealthy the tories have no interest in improving your life.
