Rishi Sunak on Andrew Marr

I always rated him. Always said he seemed honest (ok uses a few of the government lines!) but didn't white wash the situation.

Then Cummings happened and he came out in defence. Changed my mind!

But just watched him in Andrew Marr show.

He seems to be all over ALL the information - not just his area of expertise.

But what impressed me most is he said how good Witty and Vallance are. How they have countries interests and that if course science and medicine if their first priority.

He then - and this impressed me the most - said that the government are following the science because it's a pandemic but any decisions made are not Whitty and Vallances. They are not responsible . The government make decisions and they solely should be held to account.

Even said he believes what he's doing for economy is right but accepts his choice is a risk. And that if the risk doesn't pay off he it's him accountable.

Said Spads advise. We make decisions.

I really felt he was honest, truthful and also empathetic to the population.

He's restored my faith in him!

Did others get the same impression or did I miss something Wink

MashedPotatoBrainz You are absolutely right. I am flabbergasted by the gushing here over what was essentially knowledge display, clever language and callousness wrapped in smarmy skirting of issues.

itsgettingweird · 14/06/2020 13:55

That Mash confirms what I was asking/saying.

He comes across so genuine but is he just well trained in public speaking?

I have a disabled son.

I'll certainly be investigating his views more closely before forming a complete opinion.

And can I just thank everyone for balanced honest and calm responses!

I like debate. I like hearing all sides. And I've loved the fact people have bothered to read I've used language such as "seems" and "comes across".

I enjoy calm factual conversation Wine

I like him because he speaks in properly formed sentences.

Theforest · 14/06/2020 14:02

Surely Boris will be gone by the end of the year and hopefully he will replace him...

And I am definitely not a Tory.

RunningNinja79 · 14/06/2020 14:05

Rishi is my MP. Back in November he came to my village as part of his canvassing. I was at work, but I have been informed how nice he is IRL. Then again he was fishing for votes though. Then again I never saw any other candidate canvassing like he did. We got one Lib dems flyer and that was it. Rishi knocked on the doors and we had a few Tory flyers. He didn't need to, after all it was very likely to win the seat anyway as I'm sure he will continue to do so.

Recently he wrote a letter to the village shop (its only a small local independent shop) thanking them for staying open and said how he remembered his previous visit and looking forward to coming back when conditions allow.

Although I have to agree with others. He is still a Tory after all.

Graphista · 14/06/2020 14:07

Yes he may be personable, polite, articulate... still a Tory though!

And I'd have thought with a disabled son op you would be more aware than most of how appallingly this Tory govt in particular has and continued to treat the disabled.

cyclingmad · 14/06/2020 14:07

He is literally giving you what you all moan about. Just ecuse other MPs or PM doesnt say those words does not mean they dont think it or believe it themselves.

Look how him just saying what you all want MPs and PMs to say over and over and your already thinking he is amazing.

Anyone can smooth talk their way through or pay slip service but if they really mean it it will show in their actions.

Here you have a classic I have heard you, I'll repeat it back in words but I sont follow through in my actions

Walkingtheplank · 14/06/2020 14:12

I think he spoke in the General Election debates and thought he was poor but since the election his performance has been brilliant so I assume in the autumn he was nervous about live tv, being relatively new.
I watched him this morning and was really impressed - clearly on top of his brief and on the wider context.

Srictlybakeoff · 14/06/2020 14:18

I can’t admire anyone who remains in the current cabinet - ruled by Dominic Cummings , and led by bumbling Boris. Anyone with any kind of moral compass would not want to be associated with that. And he was brought in when Sajid Javid was shafted - presumably as another yes man.

itsgettingweird · 14/06/2020 14:19

Well yes graph I am. But I'm also aware the other side may or may not have been better.
I tend to look overall and realise not every Tory votes the same way. Obviously the top whips tend to.

I'm watching Rishi closely. I've been impressed. But I am aware it may be a smokescreen.

I'm also aware if we are going to remain Tory run after next GE I'd like to know who would make the best Tory PM.

I've also been impressed so far by Stamer. But he's still an unknown and it's hard to judge if he's just good at ruffling BK feathers and being a lawyer about his faults or he'd be good at leading and good with action. Plus I'm yet to look at his voting records.

AKissAndASmile · 14/06/2020 14:30

I like him because he's married to the daughter of a billionaire.

EinsteinsFineWine · 14/06/2020 15:11

I am eternally amazed when people are horrified to find MPs voting records demonstrate that they voted with the whip. Of course they do, if they are a loyal party member. Corbyn's habit of not doing so led to problems in his leadership when he had never shown loyalty to party policy and couldn't therefore expect or demand loyalty.

Miriel · 14/06/2020 15:17

I used to think quite highly of him, but I don't think anything will make up for the Cummings fiasco. He either believes in one rule for Cummings and another for the rest of us, or he's spineless. Neither is something we want in a future PM.

Shanghaisue · 14/06/2020 15:31

Johnson’s in trouble seemingly with some of the remaining Tory grandees. Wouldn’t be surprised if Tory HQ were dropping a few sunak appreciating threads to test the water Grin Not the first example of this kind of modus operandi so beloved by them - look at how no deal brexit suddenly became a moderate option with a bit of social media stirring !

SerendipityJane · 14/06/2020 15:38

To be fair to Sunak - not that it's a ringing endorsement - he isn't Priti Patel.

ssd · 14/06/2020 15:39

Christ a lot of you are easily taken in. No wonder Johnson got a landslide majority. England is condemned to a tory government for a long time, if the voters are as easily impressed.

GrumpyHoonMain · 14/06/2020 15:40

He is a more competant speaker than Boris or Priti. A friend of mine who used to work with him, corroborates this and believes his ultimate aim post treasury is to get a Oxbridge / Harvard professorship. He isn’t really cut out to be PM as all talk will be dominated by his father-in-law’s company (which was responsible for the NHS IT fiasco) and his affluent background.

ssd · 14/06/2020 15:42

Have a look at someone's voting record before you are taken in with a smooth voice and well rehearsed sound bites.

FawnDrench · 14/06/2020 15:43

He's good on camera, he's a good talker but he reminds me too much of Tony Blair in his delivery.
He's just a bit too earnest at times, as TB was when he was starting out.
Even the voice intonations and tempo are similar at times.
Just my opinion.

SerendipityJane · 14/06/2020 15:47

He is a more competent speaker than Boris or Priti.

Just to qualify my statement, it had noting to do with being more competent at speaking or indeed anything else; except "not being Priti Patel". And my next door neighbours cat has already smashed that, it's hardly a high bar.

CLCB07 · 14/06/2020 15:54

He is very polished but his voting record puts me off. I can definitely see him being a future Tory leader though. I've seen David Lammy a few times recently and he is coming over well.

Timesdone · 14/06/2020 15:57

He’s certainly the best this government has to offer & I have to say I was stunned by the financial package they put together to offset lockdown impact. He was certainly on top of his brief on Andrew Marr today, unlike the usual suspects Alok, Schapps, Johnson, Williamson, Raab, Hancock etc.they all give the impression they’re playing a round on Just a Minute. However, Sunak did accept the job on terms Savid Javid refused to comtemplate on moral grounds so it does lead me to remain suspect as to his true nature, also the very fact that he’s in the cabinet means he is a Brexit supporter. So, yes, I think he’s the best of a bad bunch & a head and shoulders above the rest in all areas that count, but at the end of the day he’s still a Brexit supporting Tory minister.

itsgettingweird · 14/06/2020 17:05

I can assure you I'm not a Rory not testing the water 🤣 my posting history will tell you that Grin
