Rock hard avocados

Snooks1971 · 13/06/2020 19:45

Bagged a bargain net of 12 (admittedly small) avocados in M&S today for £1.08, obvs reduced.
Will they ever ripen? They are like bullets. I have a couple of ripe bananas that I can put with them, or outside in the sun.
I can’t resist a bargain but now I don’t know what to do with them and I hate food waste.

Supposedly, putting them in a paper bag encourages them to ripen. Worth a try.

Ricekrispie22 · 13/06/2020 20:02

Cut it in half and put the two halves together, wrap it in foil, and bake for 10 minutes at 95°C. Once it's been in for 10 minutes, pop it in the fridge for a short while to cool down, and then it’s just right for mashing and smashing.

I put them next to bananas.

Put them with the bananas, although if they are very small they may have been picked too soon and will never ripen.

The only thing to do with avocados is throw the horrible things away.Grin

CatBatCat · 13/06/2020 20:15

Next to bananas or a sunny windowsill

Snooks1971 · 13/06/2020 20:41

@WoollyMammouth Grin
So it’s bananas or in the sun yeah?
I’m going to try the oven trick too @Ricekrispie22 there are 12 of the buggers so worth a try.
Thanks all

And in a paper bag, next to bananas, in the sun.

Watch and squeeze them every minute for a week and get increasingly frustrated that they refuse to ripen.

Then, turn your back on them for half an hour and when you return, they will all be squishy and rotten and laughing at you

Snooks1971 · 13/06/2020 21:08

@SillyBub you’re right there. I know I’m going to be fondling them every day for the next week and nothing will happen until I turn my back and take the bins out.
It’s like adopting 12 eggs that need hatching with careful conditions Shock

Me too...bought 1 from M&S said ready ripened. Looking forward to it all daySmile it was rock hard Angry

demeego96 · 13/06/2020 21:12

We’ve always put ours in the cupboard to ripen, usually results in us forgetting they exist then having to eat 5 at once before they go mushy Grin

Snooks1971 · 13/06/2020 21:16

@Overseasmom100 They tempt you in with Ready Ripened but you still need to gently squeeze the bastard through the plastic. I feel your pain though Sad

Put them in a bag with the bananas & wait. Unfortunately patience will be required.

blueskys72 · 13/06/2020 21:29

My Sainsbury's Ready to Eat ones were already on the turn this morning; my M&S Ripen at Home are seemingly destined to remain rock hard.

Snooks1971 · 13/06/2020 21:51

I wish I’d never bought them, they will get more attention than my own children get next week.
