A lot of it actually depresses me.

I've come across a lady - I don't know her personally but we've 'known' each other for about eighteen years on internet forum - who really doesn't like music. It upsets her. She has three adult children who do like it and her husband does but she really can't bear it. It's unusual but we are all different.

Sparklingbrook · 12/06/2020 20:36

I like some music but not a great deal, mainly what I grew up with. I like to have music in the car but never listen to any at home.

changedmynameforlockdown · 12/06/2020 20:43

I'm not particularly keen on music either, I will.listen to music in the car sometimes but mainly radio 4. I never listen to music at home. Don't really enjoy concerts as find them claustrophobic. I do enjoy opera but it's the emotions and beauty of the performance that appeals, wouldn't listen to it though.
Other people's music grates on me too, I definitely prefer silence.

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/06/2020 20:47

I have never been to a concert.

Dh is really into music. He plays guitar too. I have my own ear defenders.

I prefer silence and if I had 3 kids playing music too I would stab out my ear drums. Poor woman.

I went to tons of concerts in the 80s, loved every minute but I wouldn't want to go to one now.

Spanishcove · 12/06/2020 20:51

Only if I actually want to listen to it with my whole attention, whether that’s at home or at a concert or opera. I loathe background music, or other people’s amplified music.

MilkRunningOutAgain · 12/06/2020 20:55

I don’t do music much, a few songs from when I was a teen, not much since. The DCs are teens now and have the radio on / music on a lot during lockdown and it’s getting to me - I need silence & radio 4 sometimes. Never been to a concert, doubt I ever will.

june2007 · 12/06/2020 20:55

It,s an odd phrase as music comes in so many forms, my dad is a classic and opera man and doesn,t like most pop. (apparently as a young man he listened to a bit but I have never seen him do do.).

A friend loves heavy rock. Metttalica and that kind of thing.

But to not like any is unusual.

underneaththeash · 12/06/2020 20:57

I’m not that keen. I tend to have an audio book in the car rather than music. I’m not into concerts either.
I used to like it a bit more when younger - but not fussed now.

Seasiderabbit · 12/06/2020 21:10

It me. I'm always pleased when it's turned off. I find it irritating. It interupts my brain! I listen to Radio 4.

I think it's partly because I don't understand music and I don't know the names of bands or albums etc. I felt insecure about this as a teenager. All my friends had posters of pop stars on their bedroom walls and I didn't have a clue. My parents weren't very cool. I had no idea why my friends liked certain music and not others. I still don't really get it. When I went to university I stuck Guardian/Independent newspaper columns (those I agreed with obvs) on my bedroom wall! How insufferable is that?!

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 12/06/2020 21:41

I'm much more interested in spoken words so talk radio, podcasts or audiobooks for me. It usually doesn't bother me if someone has music on but I'd almost never choose it. That said, some of Taylor Swift's songs are really great (i hear them via dd Smile )

SueEllenMishke · 12/06/2020 21:46

I bloody love Taylor swift ❤️
I love music and reading - not too arsed about TV though tbh.

darwin301 · 12/06/2020 21:57

I don't like music of any kind ( I like musicals though but because of the plot not the songs)

BlessYourCottonSocks · 12/06/2020 22:17

I'm not keen. There is the odd song I like - mostly stuff from my youth - but if I'm honest most is just noise. I never have the radio on...I drive an hour to work and back in utter silence...and that suits me fine.

Funnily enough I love words but unlike a pp I loathe audio books, podcasts etc. I love to read but hate being talked at. Even as a small child I hated being read to.

Nowifi · 12/06/2020 23:15

Music is my one pleasure in life, apart from my daughter! I'd be lost without it, sounds over the top but it's so important to me and can change my mood in an instant.

Different strokes though, there are plenty of things other people love that I can't understand, i.e Lord Of the rings etc

TokyoSushi · 12/06/2020 23:18

I could take it or leave it.

Deadringer · 12/06/2020 23:28

I like music, but hate it when its too loud. When i used to go to might clubs (a millon years ago) if i was near the speakers and i could feel the vibrations going thump thump it gave me an anxious feeling in my chest. Does that sound weird?

ExpletiveDelighted · 12/06/2020 23:39

I can largely live without it. I only listen to talk radio and I tend to listen to podcasts rather than music. I loved it when I was younger and was always going to gigs, not any more. When I do listen I tend to stick with music from my youth (70s/80s), I sometimes stick old playlists on Spotify on my laptop while I work. I do like musicals as well.

Redshoeblueshoe · 12/06/2020 23:46

If my DH was trying to find me on here he would start on this thread Grin I did just read him the bit about stabbing your eardrums, yes I would do that

Paranoidmarvin · 13/06/2020 06:43

It’s not that I dislike music. But I get bored when listening to it. Now audio books! I have so many of them. I also subscribe to Audible. I had to get a new phone for the memory size as mine was too small.
I’m a housekeeper so have headphones in my ears all day. And I can listen to the same book over and over again and enjoy it.

Paranoidmarvin · 13/06/2020 06:44

Never been to a concert either. That is my kind of hell right there.

sleepydragons · 13/06/2020 06:47

I sometimes have music on in the car but mostly it's audio books.

bumblingbovine49 · 13/06/2020 06:58

I wouldn't say I dont like music. I love singing in a choir but I cannot work at all with any music on in the background so don't listen to much. In the car I listen to a bit but often switch to radio 4 after a bit . This is mostly because as a PP mentioned I know nothing about music or who sings what. I knew a bit more when young but only because I watched top of the pops ( showing my age there) and listened to the top hits on radio one once a week. Nowadays I find the idea of using an app like Spotify overwhelming . I have no idea where to start and what I might like so I just don't bother.. Occasionally I realise my my DH ( who listens to music when he works) will be able to talk about one of the more popular current songs with my DS. I never can . DS listens to a lot of stuff. which I barely recognise as music and he rolls his eyes at both DH and I Grin

PurrBox · 13/06/2020 07:13

I am very sensitive to music, so can't stand most things most of the time, but the right music at the right moment is better than anything else in the world. I find it impossible to ignore music, and get very annoyed, even infuriated, by music bombarding me, (for instance if someone has a radio on in the car playing something I don't feel like hearing).
I am a violinist.

Fluffycloudland77 · 13/06/2020 08:04

When I first got together with dh I called the music he listened to “angst ridden shite to slit your wrists to”. He still brings it up 15 years later.

Sometimes I switch R4 off if it’s desert island discs.
