If so how do you do it?

Bump?

On the desktop site, you click the arrow next to the big "Talk" at the top left, then "customise" and scroll down.

StarScream22 · 13/06/2020 08:36

Ah so I can’t do it on mobile?

StarScream22 · 13/06/2020 08:38

I just have this

Can you hide topics?

I would like to know this too.

Silvercatowner · 13/06/2020 08:41

I have a list of hidden topics in my 'settings' but I cannot actually see any difference. I wanted to hide the coronavirus topic - and have done- so I wouldn't see threads in the 'trending now' list - but they are still there. Perhaps I am missing something, but I don't know what hiding topics actually does.

StarScream22 · 13/06/2020 09:02

Ah so it’s a pointless exercise then? That’s annoying

Well it was for me but I may well be missing something. I'm on a laptop. Perhaps it works better on a tablet - don't know.

nomorefencepostsplease · 13/06/2020 09:59

If you hide topics then they won't come up in your "active" list or however you view MN.

I click "last day" so that shows me what has been posted in the last day. Before I had things hidden I would see numerous coronavirus posts as well as other things that are of absolutely no interest to me.

Hiding a topic won't stop a particular thread showing in the "trending now" box at the side, but I just ignore that and look at what comes up in the main list.

StarScream22 · 13/06/2020 10:04

Yes that’s what I want. Sometimes my active feed is full of topics I never read. I don’t want to miss any aibu drama!

OP posts:
nomorefencepostsplease · 13/06/2020 10:16

Definitely not a pointless exercise. It makes a huge difference (assuming people post in the right topics!)

I can't help you with how to do it on a mobile as I don't use MN on my phone but maybe @MNHQ will be along to help.

SoupDragon · 13/06/2020 10:40

I can't see it on the mobile site (Which is a bit odd) but it's easy enough to switch to the desktop site to make the change and then change back.

SoupDragon · 13/06/2020 10:43

The button to manage hidden things is right down the bottom. Mine appears as a blank purple rectangle because the text is the same colour as the button 🙄

Can you hide topics?
Silvercatowner · 13/06/2020 10:53

My 'hidden' topics are still appearing in the active feed. :(

bojkaboom · 13/06/2020 10:58

You can do it on a mobile. When you click on 'talk options- hide thread', the page will come up and it will say something like 'sorry you can only do this on desktop'.

Still on that page, what you do is Click the three dots on the right hand side of you browser and click 'Desktop site'. The page will immediately reload and show correctly. I do this all the time.

nomorefencepostsplease · 13/06/2020 11:02

@Silvercatowner are you sure you aren't just hiding individual threads and not whole topics?

It won't hide them from "trending" but they shouldn't appear in active.

StarScream22 · 13/06/2020 11:06

Oooooh it worked

OP posts:
bojkaboom · 13/06/2020 11:08

I've just looked on trending (Never thought to do that) and haven't seen any thread from any hidden topic there but perhaps those topics don't have any trending thread atm.

I would think it should show trending topics from those you aren't hiding, not all. Will keep checking.

Silvercatowner · 13/06/2020 11:14

No, definitely topics and not threads. I hid the coronavirus topic and it has made no difference.

LoafingLiz · 13/06/2020 11:17

Hiding some topics doesn't make as much difference nowadays. Posters seem to be sticking everything in AIBU.
It's a right pain in the arse.

SoupDragon · 13/06/2020 11:54

Trending definitely shows hidden topics and threads. From memory, they can't make that box "personalised" in that way.
bojkaboom · 13/06/2020 20:24

@SoupDragon Still showing no hidden topics but could still be because it's filled with aibu threads, then chat. No chance for any others to trend yetGrin

SoupDragon · 14/06/2020 09:05

I know it shows them because I get lured into Coronavirus threads by accident 😂

Silvercatowner · 14/06/2020 09:09

Trending definitely shows hidden topics and threads

Trending is the default on my laptop. I have to click for any other view. So even if another view didn't include hidden threads I'd still see them on trending.

Mumsnet - sort yourselves out.

StarScream22 · 14/06/2020 09:28

I don’t see trending on my mobile so I’m not bothered. It’s been bliss the last day though not having all the shit clogging up active!

Swipe left for the next trending thread
