Tommy Robinson has been urging "men" to protect Churchill's statue at the upcoming BLM protest. This doesnt bode well.....

This is a bad idea, but inevitable when the police are failing to protect public property.

Police: quit virtue signalling and do your job.

Milicentbystander72 · 12/06/2020 08:15

@Milicentbystander72 we could just give the Elgin marbles back and let their rightful owners decide...

Well of course Pogmella. The U.K. doesn't own the Colosseum either. But you know quite well that's not that the point I was trying to make.

Pommes · 12/06/2020 08:38

Black Lives Matter have just called off the main London march this weekend, because of the risk of far right counter-protests. Which sounds entirely sensible.

Absolutely sensible but how upsetting that black people (and their many allies) are having their voices suppressed again by groups that are so full of hate?

Rory786 · 12/06/2020 09:16

I agree @Pommes

He should lay off the coke for a bit.

Waiting to hear about the council for my proposal of erecting a statue of stalin in the city centre. After all, its history- and thats the only possible reason statues are erected.

Rocaille · 12/06/2020 10:06

These are going to get nasty aren't they?

With 35 police officers injured, plus widespread destruction of public property and desecration of war memorials, I think things have already got pretty nasty.

KenDodd · 12/06/2020 10:22

If they want a statue removed there are proper channels to take.

There was a campaign going on for years and years to try to get the statue removed, it kept being blocked by mainly Tory councillors. They wouldn't even allow another plague to be put on the statue to give the full story. These were elected officials, a reasonable conclusion to be drawn from that is that the people of Bristol WANTED a statue of a slave traded thought to have enslaved 85,000+ people to stand in there city.

You can’t take away Britons history, good or bad.

I think you can try. I learnt yesterday that one of the first things Boris Johnson did as mayor of London was cancel black history month.

We have a long, long way to go as a country and unfortunately the last few years we have been moving backwards.

DiggeryDoop · 12/06/2020 10:52

Totally the fault of the police. Regardless of the wrongs and rights of the situation they stood back rather than doing their job.

Sandybval · 12/06/2020 10:58

Exactly. it's not frontline officers fault, but their management who were quite happy for them to have inadequate equipment and ridiculous direction.

Imissmoominmama · 12/06/2020 11:00

@AlwaysCheddar- Jimmy Saville did charity work; it doesn’t stop him from being a monster we’d prefer to forget.

KonTikki · 12/06/2020 11:08

The poor Police.
Blamed for doing too much in America, and for not doing enough in the UK.
Still, I guess they're a handy scape goat for arm chair theorists.

MrFaceyRomford · 12/06/2020 11:10

This time is like all their Christmases come at once for the far right.

Nickname21 · 12/06/2020 11:14

Tommy Robinson was bound to stir up the far right loons they don't need much of an excuse to peddle their hate.

Sandybval · 12/06/2020 11:14

Have you ever worked for the police? Have you seen the videos of them being forced to run to safety because they have inadequate equipment to protect themselves? Do you think 12 arrests was reflective of the tiny minority who were violent? It's not officers on the street, it's the direction they have been given that is woefully inadequate.

SerendipityJane · 12/06/2020 11:38

I can remember the pro-Brexit "marches" - 4 men and a dog.

I'll also pretty certain I can remember one T. Robinson threatening violence if Brexit was delayed. So on balance he can fuck right off.

I would be amazed if enough turn up to actually go all the way around it - you'd need at least 20 people.

SatAtAsda · 12/06/2020 11:40

It’s absolutely down to Cressida Dick et al.
When a ‘certain’ element of society see others behaving with impunity - well the result is obvious.

Oh well, something to watch on the tele this weekend.
I'm utterly pissed off with the whole lot.
I acknowledge there is racism in Britain but this is not the way.

If only that were true. I think we greatly underestimate the level of racism in this country. Almost everyone I know personally who voted Leave did so because they're racist, no other reason. Britain First had two million Facebook followers when they were banned. Brexit party has 100,000+ supporters. Have you every met anyone who supports Nigel Farage and isn't a racist?

Imissmoominmama · 12/06/2020 14:24

Even racists acknowledge there’s racism in Britain though. Admitting it’s there doesn’t do anything to stop it, it just desensitises us to it.
