Potentially stupid question about DIY unscrewing a shelf

I can’t seem to use the Phillips screwdriver to unscrew these nails. Am I doing something wrong? Do I need a different tool to do it?

The screwdriver head seems to fit ok but will not turn the nail. Any ideas please??

Are you definitely turning it the right way? So left? Sorry if that's the stupidest question ever asked of you

You should be turning anti-clockwise. If it won't budge, you might be better off with an electric screwdriver - you just need more power!

The screws are probably just quite tight. Try applying a lot of downward pressure while you turn the driver to keep it in the drive. Stop if the driver slips; you don't want to strip the drive. Also, the screw looks like it is pozidriv, not Phillips. A pozi driver will work better.

It could just be the photo but I think they look glued in (as well as screwed)?

Spray some WD40 around the screw heads (they're not nails) and leave overnight, before trying again, that might help.

Thanks a lot everyone - that’s been really helpful.

Some screws near the back seem to be coming out but the front ones aren’t budging.

Thinking of getting this one: do you think this will contain the pozidrive you mention @SpartacusAutisticus

You’re using the wrong screwdriver. Pozidriv & Phillips are two different heads.
