How long will a supermarket birthday cake last?

If I buy a birthday cake (the bog standard vanilla with royal icing type) how long do they tend to have until the use by date? Trying to get DS a birthday cake and can't make one so was going to buy one in the next supermarket delivery but wasn't sure how long it'd keep?

Most say 7 days on them

Do you think it'd be really grim after 10 days? Or just a bit stale?

You could get up to 3 weeks shop life on them, the 7 days mentioned on the website is normally the typical minimum life. An iced cake has the best life out of cakes, the sponge may get a bit drier towards the end of life but will be fine Smile

They will last longer in a sealed airtight box than once they've been cut.

If you are afraid it won’t have much time left before it’s best before date could you freeze it the second it arrives and defrost on time for the birthday? Should say on the website if it’s suitable for freezing or not?

Thank you, that's really helpful. Sounds like it'll survive the ten days from the supermarket delivery!

I had a Colin the Caterpillar cake delivered yesterday with a BBE of the 21st.

DH hid a cake and forgot he'd done so, I then found it two weeks later (still sealed and boxed) and it was absolutely fine Wink

I would you with a week for a fresh taste. M&S cakes are the best.
