That isn't pie, turnover, or crumble? I have loads of apples in the garden already (they're early this year) and am already bored with the above receipes. And suggestions?

Eve's Pudding, but that's wafting toward a crumble

I LOVE a tarte tatin...very easy to do if you have a heavy frying pan/dish to go in the oven

and I know you said not crumble, but Plum and Apple together is just amazing...don't go mad with the sugar in the fruit, add in a little cinnamon ...slice the apple and quarter and stone the plums, make the crumble sweeter if you have skimped on the sugar in the fruit, use demerara in the crumble mix and on top

a few porridge oats doesn't go amiss either, and some cinnamon in the crumble too.

Cook a shoulder of pork (pulled pork) and eat your stewed apples as apple sauce

oooh or Dorset Apple cake, that works nice as a cake or as a pudding with ream and custard.

Dutch apple cake! It’s easy too. Tastes better than it looks, nice with a blob of ice cream.

Devonshire apple cake. Caramelised apples, pour sponge cake batter over the top. Bake.

Serve with custard or clotted cream

Apple snow?

Its a mixture of stewed pureed apples, whisked egg whites and whipped cream.

UncleShady · 10/06/2020 12:21

Peel, core and thickly slice apples ( works with eating apples or cookers). Saute in unsalted butter with soft brown sugar until the apples are tender and caramelly. Serve on split, lightly toasted croissants with vanilla ice cream, creme fraiche or cream.

Oh I'm liking the sound of the Dutch apple cake! I've a lovely recipe for Dorset apple cake but it has almost 300 g of sugar in it so it's REALLY sweet!

I've made it with strawberries. It's delicious.

Apple sponge pudding is v nice.
Can make with other fruit too.

Half a pint of stewed fruit
2 (bought) trifle sponge cakes
2 eggs
25g caster sugar
Half pint milk

Put the fruit in a buttered ovenproof dish.

Split the sponge cakes in half, arrange cut sides down over the fruit.
Crack eggs into a basin, add sugar, whisk, add milk, mix well.
Pour over the sponge cakes/fruit.
Place dish in a larger dish or tin with 1 cm cold water.
Bake at 170C for 30-35 mins until custard is set.
Serve warm.

Came on to say Eve's pudding, also I think there's an apple pudding called a cobbler with like a scone mix on top. Also apple and blackberry crumble is really nice (I know you said no crumble) I used to get frozen berries and pick out the blackberries, but you could use any of them.

LunaLoveFood · 10/06/2020 14:19

We use ours to make apple sauce and seal them in jars to use throughout the year.

LittlePearl · 10/06/2020 14:22

Nigel Slater's Chocolate Apple Betty is a favourite in our house.

iwilltaketwoplease · 10/06/2020 14:29

Ooo maybe have a go at making McDonald's style apple pies.

XFPW · 10/06/2020 14:34

Irish Apple cake is lovely.

Our go to when we have a glut of apples though is Swiss Toffee Apple.

3 layers:

  • Stewed apples on the bottom
  • A layer of whipped cream in the middle
  • Crispy, sweet top layer made from cornflakes, mixed together with a melted combination of butter, golden syrup & butter.

I don’t have any measurements/quantities because I just do it by eye/taste but it’s hugely popular here and has the added advantage of being gluten free so it’s a handy dessert to have up your sleeve

XFPW · 10/06/2020 14:36

You might find a recipe online for it with quantities in it.

I should also say that it is an excellent breakfast the following day (and totally acceptable as it’s basically just cereal, milk and fruit!)

Blueberrycreampie · 10/06/2020 14:41

If you have some space in your freezer, you can peel and chop/ quarter/ slice then blanch them in boiling water with a little lemon juice for 30 seconds. Then pLace in freezer bags or containers to use throughout the year!
