Can you be furloughed indefinitely?

I have been shielding for the last 3 months, I have just had a letter to say I have been taken off the shield list, my work furloughed me due to this though I have since been told everyone apart from management has been furloughed (a retail store that has been open during lockdown) I just re read my letter about furlough which just says I have been furloughed until further notice on 100% pay. Do I need to let them that I have been taken off the shielding list? I'm nervous about going back to work

I would. I don't think it would sit right with me not to say anything.

you are best telling them.

We just brought everyone back from furlough.

It was a pain in the arse where people had notified us if they were on the shielding list or had been taken off.

We planned on leaving those shielding on furlough. All of a sudden we had lots of people, saying they wanted to come back and were nor sheilding. Where they told us their condition meant they had to.

It caused lots of extra work. Just keep them updated. If everyone is furloughed, you will likely just continue being furloughed.

Oh and if you don't tell them, and they leave you on furlough while bringing others back, they could ask for some sort of proof you are still shielding.

Its not going to reflect well that, you have let them assume you sre still shielding.

Why were you taking off the shielding list and have you confirmed your GP is happy with that decision? That would be the first thing I would do.

I am shielding (still on the list) and am gutted to be furloughed indefinitely. I am so worried about my workload when I return (if I return now as I am job hunting). From my understanding furlough is running until October at the earliest.

My GP is happy for me to return to work as long as it is WFH due to shielding.

Just let your line manager know you're no longer shielding and are available for work as soon as they need you.

If there's the slightest chance they make redundancies then get yourself in the best position to remain employed.

Who was the letter from? Are you sure it’s genuine? @lulu788

lulu788 · 09/06/2020 15:49

Yeah it's genuine- asthma uk posted last week about people being taken off the list and to shield until the old letter says- mine says 26th of June! I have asthma and heart condition so hence the shielding.

Yes I did hear that about asthma up. I think it’s important to tell your employer , it may well be gross misconduct to mislead them.

lulu788 · 09/06/2020 16:23

Thanks everyone, I will let them know that once my letter is up for the 26th June I can come back to work.
