Recommend me an iPhone - upgrade due

I've currently got an 8s plus. Love the screen size so wouldn't want to go for anything smaller.

I think my upgrade options are the Xs or variants of the 11.

Any experience of these? Pros and cons?

Thank you Smile

You'll be making the jump to the X style of no-home-button and face ID, but it's startlingly easy to convert so don't worry about that.

They're all fantastic phones. The Xr and the 11 are the sweet spots. They're imperceptibly not as good as the Xs/XsMax or 11 Pro's respectively, but vastly cheaper.

Get an 11 if you have the cash spare; go for the Xr otherwise. You won't regret any of them.

TheHighestSardine · 06/06/2020 20:10

I should have said: in screen area, even the smallest X/11 phones have the same as your Plus, but taller and skinner so they do look smaller.

The Xr and 11 'feel' about the same size as a Plus, despite being physically smaller but more screen area.

The Max models are the same physical size as your Plus, but have looooads more screen. I got an XsMax, but I should have waited for the Xr honestly.

BlueGreenYellowRed · 06/06/2020 20:12

I had an X and downgraded to an 8 when it broke. There's barely any difference between them so the X is not worth the extra money imo.

TheHighestSardine · 06/06/2020 20:18

Fair point. Getting a new battery into your 8sPlus would be far cheaper than an upgrade (£49) and give you effectively a new phone that'll be supported for another three years or so I reckon.

velourvoyageur · 06/06/2020 20:39

You could keep your old phone if it’s still working? That would be the greenest option.

blueskys72 · 06/06/2020 20:53

Thanks for the pointers!

Yes, ideally I would keep this one but I tend to hand them down to DS, and his is on its last legs with a knackered battery and cracked screen Confused

I think I'd miss the home button, but I guess you get used to the difference pretty quickly. It's difficult not being able to hold them to compare the feel and weight etc. First world problem, absolutely!

I got the Xr for work and the 8S for myself in the same month. I prefer the 8. Photos etc are same quality. I miss the fingerprint feature on the 8.

Honeyroar · 06/06/2020 21:45

Both same weight. 8 is a few mm bigger.

blueskys72 · 06/06/2020 22:25

That's interesting! I suppose another 8s+ is still an option ...

I love the 8. I won't know where to go when this (inevitably) gets knackered. Great pix quality and fingerprint ID is good too.

I suppose we can get used to anything, but big screens and heavy weight are a no no for me now. Won't fit in a pocket of my jeans even though my backside is big enough!

H1978 · 06/06/2020 22:29

I have an xr, good screen size and excellent battery life, I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a ‘cheaper’ model.

YesThisIsMe · 06/06/2020 22:36

Honestly I’d try to wait for the 12 with 5G. It’s going to make such a difference, and in the current circumstances your DS can live with an almost knackered phone for a while.

ExpletiveDelighted · 06/06/2020 22:49

I've got an Xs, IIRC I chose it because it was smaller and lighter than the XR, I don't like big phones. Also it is available with larger storage capacity. This was before the 11s came out so I'm not familiar with them. I've been very pleased with it.

SabrinaThwaite · 06/06/2020 23:13

Have you looked at the new iPhone SE? It’s the size of the 8, still has the home button and Touch ID, same chip as the 11 but is much cheaper.

poppinpink · 07/06/2020 07:46

I was just coming on to say the SE, I'm also due an upgrade and that's what I was thinking. Smaller size but does what the 11 does.

AGoodYearfortheRoses · 07/06/2020 07:51

I’ve just upgraded from an 8 to an 11 and I love certain things about it but I do really miss Touch ID - it’s not always practical to pick up your phone so your face is recognised plus Face ID is a bit temperamental if you don’t hold the phone in the right place or are wearing eg sunglasses. Great camera though which was mainly why I got it.

ExpletiveDelighted · 07/06/2020 08:39

My face ID works with sunglasses however it doesn't when wearing a mask. I had been using the Sainsburys scanning app to shop but have had to go back to the hand held scanners now I have started wearing a mask.

blueskys72 · 07/06/2020 11:06

Ah, I'd seen the SE on the list but didn't know where it sat in terms of performance and features etc.

This is quite a useful article (compares the SE to the upcoming 12, and to features on existing iPhone models):

Sexnotgender · 07/06/2020 11:44

I’ve got the 11 pro, great phone. I had an XR and it was just a bit too big.

TheHighestSardine · 07/06/2020 13:58

The SE is an iPhone 11 in an iPhone 8 shell, roughly speaking. Performance is tremendous, price is sane.

blueskys72 · 07/06/2020 16:02

I don't think I'd like the size of the SE. I'm used to the 8s Plus.
