Omg the scenes from the London protests

I'm just watching the news and am finding it so frightening to see the crowds, the police, the tension, the horse bolting.
I understand the desire to protest but how is this the right way to do things? I know there will be thousands of peaceful protesters among the ones causing trouble.
I'm concerned about the covid risk to everyone there especially as BAME are more at risk of the virus.

I hate confrontation and get very anxious so wanted to chat to others about this. Yes, I could switch off but I think it's important to watch and learn and understand what and why is happening.

Sections of the protests are (unsurprisingly) turning violent. But we will still have people on here saying violence is acceptable and valid because ‘black lives matter’. These protests should never have been allowed to happen.

EasynowPatrick · 06/06/2020 22:12

@mumsnet isn’t prepared to say anything about racism because they’d have to mute most of the posters on here. These posts will continue full of hate until black people give up again in the face of constant criminalisation. The already expected 2nd peak of this atrociously managed public health crisis, will be down to those no good s!

@Theeighthelephant

I never said there was not a problem with American police at all?

And apparently this has happened to a white prisoner as well in America in exactly the same way . And I agree it’s totally wrong that anyone in authority should do this . There is also a massive problem in the USA of miscarriage of justice with BAME.

All I said is NOW in the middle of a worldwide pandemic is not the time to be protesting in close proximity without masks (;watch the videos) and then turn to violence .

Two wrongs don’t make a right .

MagicMoments6 · 06/06/2020 22:16

Oh fuck right off with the racist accusations.

You can oppose a protest which has the potential to cause he death of thousands without being racist.

Not everything is an attack on the BAME communities. Stop with the crap.

Most of us just don't want our vulnerable relatives to die. It doesn't mean we are glad that George did, or that we wish the same on any other people of colour, or that we don't despise racism.

Thousands more do not need to die to avenge the lawless murders of those you are protesting about.

The officers responsible have been charged, what else do you want? Do you actually want thousands more to die from coronavirus? Will you feel a bit better then?

SusieOwl4 · 06/06/2020 22:16

The other thing is in this country everyone is free to become an MP and make change .

Very one is always moaning MP get paid too much , well go and join them get paid and bring about change .

CantSayJack · 06/06/2020 22:17

For those of you struggling to comprehend what is actually happening in the world;

Institutional racism was defined by Sir William Macpherson in the UK's Lawrence report (1999) as: "The collective failure of an organization to provide an appropriate and professional service to people because of their colour, culture, or ethnic origin. It can be seen or detected in processes, attitudes and behaviour which amount to discrimination through prejudice, ignorance, thoughtlessness and racist stereotyping which disadvantage minority ethnic people."[

Black Lives Matter ✊🏿

MagicMoments6 · 06/06/2020 22:18

If you were there then don't bother calling 111 and blocking up the beds of the NHS when you get ill. It'll be your own fault.

Your militant mindsets are actually perpetuating the problem that they are protesting about.

Rocaille · 06/06/2020 22:19

EasynowPatrick, I don't understand why you say that black people are being criminalized when the law has been waived so they can take part in these protests.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm not aware of any of the protesters being issued with fixed penalty notices for breaching the regulations on gatherings?

MadameMarie · 06/06/2020 22:19

Exactly this! If things have been so awful for 400 years why decide now in the middle of a pandemic it the best time to protest?

Boredom. One of the main concerns of the government about locking down (and a factor in delaying it too long) was the potential for civil unrest.

Without the opium for the masses (pubs and bars, restaurants, gyms football, Starbucks, Mcdonalds, Primark etc) there's a void to be filled.

Capitalism is very effective at keeping peoples minds occupied and relatively content. Then this pandemic comes along and takes their copes away.

SusieOwl4 · 06/06/2020 22:19

Btw it’s a fact that more black Americans are killed by other black Americans than are killed by the police . And no one on here is denying change should happen. In the correct way.

BlackSwan · 06/06/2020 22:20

Not struggling with what's happening in the world. The R factor was coming down below 1 and large gatherings are only going to feed the virus. That's what's happening in the world.

cyclingmad · 06/06/2020 22:21

The iront of white people living in fear of a virus screaming about how their lives matter and people should listen and stay af home...its only been a few months for them...meanwhile poc have to live in fear and face racism everyday for years, have been protesting and speaking up for decades and noone listening.

White people come along and think their voice is more worthy and one that must be listened to because they got just a glimpse of what living in fear of dying from something they cannot control

cyclingmad · 06/06/2020 22:21

Irony*

happinessischocolate · 06/06/2020 22:22

And more white people are killed by other white people, than are killed by the police, but that doesn't make police brutality or murder okay

Flutteryb · 06/06/2020 22:24

I'm not worried for me @cyclingmad, I have had covid. I am worried for those who are disproportionately affected who are likely to have put themselves and their families at risk. And also being against the protests doesn't mean you're against the movement or agree that change needs to happen and are keen to engage.

If it wasn't for the protests, do you really think the officers would face any more than minimal charges?

Although they haven't been convicted yet, so I won't hold my breath.

What has that got to do with systemic racism, and what is the correct way?
Aridane · 06/06/2020 22:25

Horrible scenes. The bolted horse footage is difficult to watch.

TBH I found the slow murder of George Floyd more difficult to watch

CantSayJack · 06/06/2020 22:26

@cyclingmad Well said

Are you going to post to some white-supremacist article about black-on-black crime next? That's what usually happens.

This.

Omg the scenes from the London protests
Aridane · 06/06/2020 22:29

The biggest danger to black people in London is knife crime.

Actually it’s heart disease

< backs away slowly >

MadameMarie · 06/06/2020 22:32

How many people who have been complying with the rules will think 'sod it' after today and why bother?

So the repercussions are beyond the virus spreading among the protesters.

ShootsFruitAndLeaves · 06/06/2020 22:33

AIR, black people are less likely to die while in police custody in the UK than white people.

I'm sure people protesting in the UK are convinced they are right though.
