Exciting Friday thread: do you own a lasagne dish?

..that fits exactly one sheet of standard dried lasagne? With no pasta surgery required? If so can you tell me where you bought this mythical dish?

@LadyMuck111 👍 I'm trying it this week, my mouth is watering at the thought.

Faraway20 · 06/06/2020 18:37

Stcharlotte I have saved that link! Will measure my sheets and report back!

Herbie a loaf tin is inspired, thank you

@iklboo

DS follows a tip from Tom Kerridge. Roast the mince on a baking tray for 40 mins at gas 6, breaking it up every 10 mins. He caramelises the onions too.

I've got eyes on being mum to the next superstar chef (kidding, he enjoys cooking but we won't force him down any path he doesn't want to) Grin

Interesting tip, might try that.

Meanwhile my DS has just completed his food tech GCSE, and got almost full marks for the practical exam as they managed to get that exam in before they cancelled GCSEs for this year. No idea what he may have got in his written exam, we'll have to see what grade they choose to give him in August.

His brief for the practical was budget menu. So he chose Tuna pate, Goulash, and sticky toffee pudding. And the Goulash is now a family regular.

Hope your DS enjoys the Food Tech course, DS did.

Thanks @MulticolourMophead - he's looking forward to going back to it. I'll keep him occupied in the meantime. I'm teaching him Sunday roast chicken tomorrow.

MulticolourMophead · 06/06/2020 21:53

@iklboo A sunday roast recipe is always a good basic to have in the bag Grin Meanwhile, DS is heading into the STEM group of subjects. I've got him on the cooking rota, though, he said he chose the option to learn how to cook so I said he can keep it up Grin

I have some rectangle dishes that may be perfect for individual lasagna, I bought them in one of the poundshops, they are supposed to be pie dishes. I will go check when this small child decides to finally go to sleep (although not sure if I have any lasagna sheets...).

inappropriateraspberry · 06/06/2020 22:13

I made lasagne tonight and was wondering why they don't make a dish to fit the sheets, or sheets to fit the dish! I have a domino one which they DO NOT FIT! You'd think they'd have got it right?
Used Tesco sheets and they don't like to be snapped - shattered into pieces! Lidl sheets snap quite easily though. They are slightly different sizes as well - so no 'lasagne standard' apparently.
Also I always have to snap a bit off the corners to make it fit to the edge.
Smaller sheets with rounded corners would be ideal!

SabrinaThwaite · 06/06/2020 22:44

I think it’s the depth of the dish that matters - most dishes are too shallow to get several layers in. I can cope with slicing up the sheets to fit.

Also its reminds me of DH going twinning to Italy and staying with a family - in the first night the hostess brought out a huge lasagne and being starving he had about three huge helpings and was completely stuffed. And then came the meat dish, and the fish course, and a salad, and a dessert ...

Faraway20 · 07/06/2020 09:11

I think we need a petition to standardize the lasagne sheet, get to the root of the problem!

Btw I made my lasagne yesterday, mince and sauce in the slow cooker, then Mary Berry's white sauce and it was delicious! But I had to snap all the sheets. Dp was lurking round with a tape measure as he thinks I'm being dramatic, lets see if he finds one!

@Faraway20

Whats the milk thing?
Was that to me?

I warm the milk the day before with half an onion, bay leaves, black peppercorns, pinch of nutmeg etc in it, then leave it overnight before I make my white sauce.

Faraway20 · 07/06/2020 12:31

Ooh sounds good, Im still perfecting my white sauce, quite like Mary berry's which has a touch of mustard in.
I thought someone was soaking mince in milk upthread too..

I do an all in one white sauce. Chuck milk, flour and butter in pan, keep whisking until it thickens. Cook it out for a couple of minutes and then season. Add cheese, mustard etc for what you're using it for. Or use creme fraiche instead! I also use tins of ratatouille rather than tomatoes. Gives a bit more flavour and texture. Last night it prob took around an hour to make and cook. Was delicious! I did a beef one for the family and a veggie one for me. We've got enough for tea tonight as well.

ExpletiveDelighted · 07/06/2020 13:05

I sometimes do all in one white sauce if I'm in a hurry, but I enjoy making a proper roux and steeping the milk the day before as Polkadots describes takes it to a whole new level.

RedElephants · 07/06/2020 13:20

Thisbarstardcomputer I have that one too Smile

EggysMom · 07/06/2020 13:27

I have a dish from Sainsburys that takes exactly 3 dried lasagne sheets across its top Smile The problem is the slightly sloping sides and rounded corners, so I have to pre-soak the lasagne sheets for the lower layers and trip about up to a centimetre off the length plus curve the corners. Never mind. Biggest problem is that there's only two of us and it makes enough for 3 so I always have to freeze a portion!

maddiemookins16mum · 07/06/2020 13:43

I’ve always had to snap it, then I find shards of pasta in a corner of the kitchen 2 days later.
