Is there anything I can do (ebay related)

DD brought a refurbished laptop off eBay (I know I know) around 8 weeks ago. It’s broken but seeing as it’s past the 30 days return window ebay are saying they can’t help. I assume the buyer cannot be forced to refund (she’s happy to send it back) either. Is there anything we can do, she’s a student so £400 is a lot to loose.

Presume she paid via PayPal? If so raise a case there. They allow 180 days from memory.

Yes, raise a dispute with PayPal.

Off tangent I know but £400 is a lot for a refurbished laptop. I work in IT and in more normal circs would offer to look at it to assist with a diagnosis if eBay won't play ball. Can you at least describe what you mean by broken?

Entirely depends on the laptop I suspect. £400 wouldn't be a lot for a higher end refurb macbook.

As an aside. Please don't let anyone look at it or try and fix it yourself. Just file your claim with PayPal. If its suspected you've tampered wihh it in any way things could get sticky.

It’s a Microsoft surface pro I believe. I’m not sure if she did pay by PayPal or not I think her card is linked to her account. I assume that means it’s not through PayPal. I’ll ask her tomorrow. It won’t charge, the charger goes in lights up but the actual laptop won’t charge any more. She said she had a similar issue when she got it but assumed it was the charger as the seller sent her new one and it started charging just fine.

Raise a dispute case with PayPal.

I know this doesn't help this time, but CEX have two year guarantees on tech from memory. Much safer option

Dougalthesyrianhamster · 03/06/2020 23:29

If she paid by card, then the payment will have been made via Paypal.

PigletJohn · 04/06/2020 00:22

What does "its broken" mean?

How long after delivery did it stop working?

PigletJohn · 04/06/2020 00:26

Sorry, I see now it is not charging.

Might both chargers have been faulty? Do they appear to be made by the laptop manufacturer, and the correct model? Or cheap Chinese substitutes?

Do you know how old it is? Batteries have a limited life.
