Good Desert Island Discs Episodes?

amillionnamechangeslater000 · 03/06/2020 20:17

I adore Desert Island Discs and have listened to many, but of course not the whole back catalogue. Am now going back and trying to pick out some from years gone by - so any ones that you have particularly enjoyed - especially not from your typical “high profile” interviewee (as these are the ones I’m most likely to miss).

Atul gawande

Dawn french

Jilly Cooper was a riot!

Hugh Laurie

Ian Wright

There was a lady whose husband was killed outside their house and is now a campaigner, I found her so inspiring, but clearly not enough to remember her name which is embarrassing

John MacEnroe - I know nothing about tennis - but he had me howling with laughter, funny, funny man.

Davros · 05/06/2020 08:47

Today is DID day on R4 from 9am. I'm not entirely sure what that means as the schedule looks normal but might be worth checking out

ITonyah · 05/06/2020 08:48

Davina McCall. Surprisingly moving.

Itwasgoodwhileitlasted · 05/06/2020 08:50

I loved Goldie Hawn.

Going to listen to one today but no idea where to start with all these fantastic suggestions.

This is a very interesting list - going back decades

Timepasses · 09/10/2020 10:54

Ive just listened to Samantha Morton's and it is very moving. Worth a listen.

Sleepingdogs12 · 09/10/2020 12:55

Yes , it was great. I particularly recommend it to anyone working with children in care because she talked about her time in foster care and residential care.
My all time favourite was the Lake District farmer who wrote a book. I had to stop the car for a little cry. So beautiful !

Ediemccreedy · 11/10/2020 21:19

I’ve been listening to some of the classics - Jilly Cooper, Roux brothers, Mary Berry, Hugh Laurie

Also enjoyed the Zoe Ball one, Heidi Thomas and Gary Barlow. I just love DID!

Love DID, especially with Kirsty Young. My favorites would be:
Lee Mack (so funny & emotional for some reason)
Keith Richards
James Nesbit
Morrissey
Kathy Burke
Victoria Woods
Davina McCall
More recent ones I've enjoyed are:
John Copper Clarke
Simon Armattage

Bob Mortimer
Wendy Cope

I'm finding Lauren a bit harder to get used to, I normally love her on the like of Glastonbury but I don't know I just miss Kirsty

Clive James
Julie Burchill

Autumngoldleaf · 11/10/2020 22:53

Great thread! How do I access them on Google home?

Niki haslam stuck in my mind, he had polio as a child, his mums gramophone... Her pearls!

Jux · 11/10/2020 23:09

I loved this one (Maggie Aderin-Pocock's first one) because of the way she answers almost every question with "yeeeeeeeeeessssssssssss" and then very gently explains why not! She's a bit of a hero of mine. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00r33mq

Jux · 11/10/2020 23:11

The BBC DID site no longer has a search function, just the general one for any BBC content (why do site designers do this? there was nothing at all wrong with the old site and at least you could search sensibly without it throwing up tons of stuff from other shows/pods/tv/etc).

HelloDulling · 11/10/2020 23:19

Martin Lewis was fab recently, as was Sharon Horgan.

panachronic · 11/10/2020 23:29

Barry Manilow was fantastic on DID and I'm not even a fan, he had Kirsty (and me!) in stitches.

Also: Steve Coogan, Sharon Horgan, Kathy Burke. Loads more that I can't think of now as it was a few years ago when I went through the back catalogue.

Polestar50 · 11/10/2020 23:49

Can't believe no one has mentioned Chris Packham yet!

Eloquent, funny and with the widest open heart.

Toontown · 12/10/2020 07:36

Love DID! Lots of favourites on here already
Brian Moore,
Bradley Wiggins
Maya Angelou

mizu · 12/10/2020 07:49

Stephen Graham's was good. Added some of his songs to my Spotify list............

BarbaraofSeville · 12/10/2020 08:22

I've never listened to DID but I'm running out of podcasts due to a couple of long journeys recently, so I'm going to try a few.

If it's the interview format you like, how about trying Jay Rayner's Out to Lunch, where he talks to a celebrity over lunch, or takeaway during lockdown, or Louis Theroux's Grounded series, where he's talking to celebrities.

thetrees · 12/10/2020 08:28

I loved David Nott and randomly, the creator of Call the Midwife whose name I can't remember.

If you like DID then it's worth listening to old episodes of In the Psychiatrists Chair. There are some crackers on there.
