Good Desert Island Discs Episodes?

amillionnamechangeslater000 · 03/06/2020 20:17

I adore Desert Island Discs and have listened to many, but of course not the whole back catalogue. Am now going back and trying to pick out some from years gone by - so any ones that you have particularly enjoyed - especially not from your typical “high profile” interviewee (as these are the ones I’m most likely to miss).

Just listened to the Floella Benjamin one on way to work. What an amazing woman. She will always be my playschool lady Smile

Bob Monkhouse and Kenneth Williams are really interesting. Bob's mum sounds completely batty - she turned up to his wedding dressed in black and didn't speak to him again because she didn't want him to get married!

Floella this week was great. So positive. "Childhood lasts a lifetime."

Jimmy Carr was a great one. Always thought he was a bit of an arse but he's actually not!

I love Desert Island discs..I did love David Nott, Phillip Treacy I found moving and funny especially as I knew almost nothing about him beforehand.
My favourite was Dustin Hoffman who was just as you would imagine him to be.

Listened to John Cooper Clarke’s today and loved it. Very interesting guy, very candid and down to earth with excellent musical choices.

Another vote for Nigel Owens.

I loved David Nott and randomly, the creator of Call the Midwife whose name I can't remember.

If you like DID then it's worth listening to old episodes of In the Psychiatrists Chair. There are some crackers on there.

I've never listened to DID but I'm running out of podcasts due to a couple of long journeys recently, so I'm going to try a few.

If it's the interview format you like, how about trying Jay Rayner's Out to Lunch, where he talks to a celebrity over lunch, or takeaway during lockdown, or Louis Theroux's Grounded series, where he's talking to celebrities.

Can't believe no one has mentioned Chris Packham yet!

Eloquent, funny and with the widest open heart.

Barry Manilow was fantastic on DID and I'm not even a fan, he had Kirsty (and me!) in stitches.

Also: Steve Coogan, Sharon Horgan, Kathy Burke. Loads more that I can't think of now as it was a few years ago when I went through the back catalogue.

Martin Lewis was fab recently, as was Sharon Horgan.

The BBC DID site no longer has a search function, just the general one for any BBC content (why do site designers do this? there was nothing at all wrong with the old site and at least you could search sensibly without it throwing up tons of stuff from other shows/pods/tv/etc).

I loved this one (Maggie Aderin-Pocock's first one) because of the way she answers almost every question with "yeeeeeeeeeessssssssssss" and then very gently explains why not! She's a bit of a hero of mine. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00r33mq

Yes , it was great. I particularly recommend it to anyone working with children in care because she talked about her time in foster care and residential care.
My all time favourite was the Lake District farmer who wrote a book. I had to stop the car for a little cry. So beautiful !
