I love getting off the plane onto the shoogly steps and feeling the warmth. I’m convinced it’s a different warmth to when it gets warm here.

Also sitting down to eat beside the lake/ sea, knowing the food will be gorgeous.

Thank you for this thread, looking forward to our re-booked holiday in 364 days. Shock
We're going back to the same place we went in 2017, quite a small AI with water slides and just looking forward to the kids being more independent, and holidays actually being a holiday for DP & I too!

Greenteandchives · 03/06/2020 13:18

We have lost all our holidays for this year.Sad
We love cruising, and don’t know at this point when that will return, or whether we will want to do it anymore when it does.
I was so looking forward to wearing my holiday clothes, and drinking cocktails in the evenings looking out at the sea.
Also I love exploring new places.

PuddleglumtheMarshWiggle · 03/06/2020 13:52

Am I the only one who holidays in Britain?
Checking the weather forecast and planning canoeing and gorge scrambling for the wet days. Rock climbing, abseiling and Go Ape for the dry days. Hiking all day then judging the best pub by the one that has the biggest pile of hiking boots by the door (not allowed to wear them inside!) The stunning views from the top of Langdale Pike making the climb worthwhile and the picnic even tastier. No problems getting to sleep as you're exhausted but so proud of your achievements that day.
I wish I was on holiday!

This thread is pure torture.

MotherofKitties · 03/06/2020 14:58

The smell of the food wafting out from the restaurants mixed with the sound of the sea as you walk past in the sun.

Not feeling cold once.

Having nothing to worry about other than what to wear that evening and if your waistline can take another sangria

This thread has made me realise that I've recreated many of my favourite holiday things. although predictably the weather's turned for a while now Sad.

I've spent lots of time sitting in the garden reading with a cold beer or a G&T after going for a walk in the morning before it gets too hot, stopping at the farm shop ice cream counter on the way back.

I've made prawns in garlic sauce a couple of times, which to me is that holiday restaurant smell, and it's really very quick and easy to do.

I've some squid in the freezer that I keep meaning to make into battered calamari, my other favourite holiday food, I have at least one of these just about every day on holiday.

I've not got as far as a glass of cava from the breakfast buffet (just a small one, mind) and if there's no Mediterranean holidays this year, it's the swim and snorkel in the warm, clear water that I'll miss the most.

Flyingarcher · 03/06/2020 16:09

@gerbo Totally, yes. Then that evening walk through the campsite checking people's set up and seeing how many cadacs are being used on 'Cadac Alley'. Washing up next to strangers and chatting about places to go and see. A beach side food shack ( Dunes 2 Brem Sur Mere, how we miss you). Creperie, beach side amazing fish in Greece. The blue of the sea. The noise of swifts flying through a deserted town square in front of a fab church. Said coolness of church after the heat.
Dry stone walls with lizards scootching about.
A swiming pool with no one in it.

Rosieredapples · 03/06/2020 16:17

I will miss that night before you go away feeling, we usually have all the house sorted cleaned and fridge etc empty, so go for a meal out the night before our hols begin to feel like we've started the holiday as soon as we can.
Kids and my DH are full of excitement, lots of chatter about what we will do and see, we have a good bottle of wine while out, then go home put suitcases in the hall ready for the off, early the next morning.

dustyfloordrobe · 03/06/2020 16:28

The after-beach shower, and then slathering with after-sun
Walking on really hot sand
Going out to dinner with slightly damp hair (from afore-mentioned shower)
Sitting on the balcony, drinking wine, wearing just a towel
Getting really into a good book - never have the chance at home
The sound of the water lapping at the filter of an empty swimming pool first thing in the morning, when it's so still and quiet

PrincessHoneysuckle · 03/06/2020 16:40

Not having to cook any meals.Enjoying an alcoholic drink before dinner then enjoying several more afterwards Grin

8Track · 03/06/2020 16:49

gerbo · 03/06/2020 17:00

@Flyingarcher, we love checking out other pitches too! Camping gear, how they've pitched.....

Evening strolls around the campsite smelling food and hearing chatting and laughing.

Another fave- everyone lying in lazily then strolling alone to the bakery for fresh bread and croissants for breakfast. Our holidays are very simple but I do love them.

peanutsandcream · 03/06/2020 17:14

Seeing ds running along the beach. And definitely miss the buffet breakfast.

taptonaria27 · 11/06/2020 20:02

I have a really daft one to add to this - coming back to my garden after a week or two away to see what's grown! Daffodil
