Rain please

Is anybody else praying for rain - the land is parched and arid, desperately in need of a few days of good, steady rain to reduce the soil moisture deficit. The fields are brown, little grass growing for grazing animals, the wheat, barley and other cereal crops need a good soaking to bring them on and plump the grain and trees are starting to show signs of drought stress.

Here, in the South West, my raingauge has recorded less than half an inch of rain since the beginning of March!

When it does come, the land will breathe a huge sigh of relief, soak it up, belch and, like Oliver Twist, ask for more. I cannot wait for it and that gorgeous petrichor smell that will accompany it!

Anyone care to join me in a rain dance

We've got a bit of light rain here. ( North Cornwall) I think I can hear the garden sighing.

FuzzyPuffling · 03/06/2020 06:59

Ladybird...yes soak the tree. It might just be the leaves that have shrivelled, and the plant itself is ok. Intensive care for it now!

Cocopips · 03/06/2020 08:25

The neighbours kid has been bouncing his football in their patio and kicking against my fence since 7:20 this morning. I woke up and Sounds like a bloody firework going off. He’s still out there. So please rain do I can at least have a lie in. I’m on maternity and back to work September. I really hate this every morning and every day it goes on literally all day. Angry

CoronaIsComing · 03/06/2020 08:36

I’ll send you our rain if you like 😂

Waxonwaxoff0 · 03/06/2020 08:38

Rain here in Derbyshire, the rest of the week is meant to be quite wet. I do love the sun but my flat gets so hot and stuffy, it's nice to open the windows this morning and feel the cool air coming in and smell the rain.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 03/06/2020 08:40

June usually tends to be quite wet I've noticed. DS's birthday is in June and it rains every year!

userxx · 03/06/2020 08:41

I'm going to have to put shoes on today instead of flip flops 😱

SurreyHillsGirl · 03/06/2020 09:35

Yes, I am with you, OP. I love summer rain, the scent it gives off after a spell of scorched sun. I love the sun, but I get bored of it day after day. The garden needs it and now the temperature is more bearable we will be able to get out on our bikes and take the hounds out for a long lunchtime walk Smile

I love getting cosy too and you just cannot do that when the sun is out Brew

pinktaxi · 03/06/2020 11:42

Quite happy for the rain at the moment and for the next few days, but please not constant throughout the summer 😊

steppemum · 03/06/2020 11:53

Ladybird

soak the tree, put ht ehose on for an hour, and let the groudn get a really good soak.

I planted 2 trees in the front garden in the autumn. They were doing well, spring flowers and leaves etc.

Lats week I noticed that one of them wasn't happy. The leaves had gone autumn red, and wilty and the little fruits/berries were shrivelled. The other one was fine.
I looked at the ground was rock hard dry. I gave both trees a massive soak, repeated it again about 5 days later.
To me astonoshment, the leaves have turned back to green. I didn't think they could do that, my aim was just to save the tree. So they have survived, but I am keeping a close eye.

last night I watered 2 plants that were shrivelled and dying, neither have ever needed watering in the 10 years I have lived here!

Oxyiz · 03/06/2020 12:04

I'd love rain throughout the summer. Rather that than drought! And rather that than being boiled alive in our flat.

I'm very glad that no one can control the weather.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 03/06/2020 12:08

It's chucked it down here overnight and until about an hour ago - Cumbria. Think we've found it weird to have such a spate of good weather; it is nicer than people think it is up here in terms of sunshine, but not often for many weeks in a row with no rainfall.

Deathraystare · 03/06/2020 12:17

Selfishly yes, I would pray for rain - if I prayed.

Yesterday, and the day before , sitting in my tiny sauna of a room, I was sweating buckets. When I had mopped myself down I had heat rashes all over. Thank goodness I found my Sudocrem!

evilharpy · 03/06/2020 12:33

I would love it to only rain overnight and then be hot and sunny all day, all year round. I hate winter. Hate it. I would happily hibernate from the end of September till the end of April every year. Sadly I have a husband and child who are the opposite to me and whine about too much heat.

FuzzyPuffling · 03/06/2020 12:39

We have rain! Not a huge amount, but on and off gentle stuff. I can hear the water butts filling and the plants sighing!

steppemum · 03/06/2020 12:41

SW here, a bit of drizzle this morning and overcast, but no actual rain.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 03/06/2020 16:41

It been pissing down in the Peak District all day. Lovely. I was getting a bit tired with waking up to blazing sunshine every day, I like a bit of variation.

Auridon4life · 03/06/2020 16:54

It's just humid mist at the momentAngry

derxa · 03/06/2020 19:21

I've made a complaint to BBC about the weather forecasts. They constantly go on about 'good' and 'bad' weather. Rain for 'parched gardens' Angry We farmers need rain to grow the grass that feeds our animals. I am disgusted of Tunbridge Wells. Grin

ListeningQuietly · 03/06/2020 20:28

More fool you to use the BBC for weather
when you do not for news

Met Office all the way

Beekeeper1 · 03/06/2020 20:31

I am glad to hear that at least some of you have been having a decent amount of rainfall, and envious too! Here, although it is cooler, fresher and altogether more comfortable, we have yet to receive more than a pathetic bit of drizzle which has barely even registered a 'trace' on my raingauge or settled the dust!

@derxa, we have, I believe, agreed before on the weatherforecasters taking about a 'risk' of rain as if it is somehow a negative, rather than being the precious, lifegiving stuff that it is. I, for one, vicariously support, endorse and second your complaint!

OP posts:
Beekeeper1 · 03/06/2020 20:34

'talking about a risk' that should read, not 'taking about'. Really should proofread before posting

I actually agree on that - I've never really thought about it but why is it presented everywhere as bad or risky? It absolutely should be "great news for crops" rather than "shame about your bbq"!

userxx · 04/06/2020 13:35

@Oxyiz My mum always says" oh the farmers will be grateful" :)
