Help! Classical piano tune stuck in head

If anyone has a wide knowledge of classical piano music please help!
During lockdown I've been playing quite a bit again. I have my Dad's old piano books, there's a lot of Mozart and Beethoven sonatas.
Now a tune has got stuck in my head and I can't find it in the books. I'm sure my dad used to play it (he died when I was a child sadly so I can't ask him).
If you think you may be able to help send me a PM and I'll try and get a clip of me singing it to you.
It's driving me crazy day and night!

It's not Adieu to the Piano is it?

Thank you so so much @BoxOfShapes @belavi and @ScarfLadysBag! I'd missed it when I went through all the books (did think it was Beethoven) as right hand starts in bass. Tricky key to play! Here's a pic with my dad's writing on it (he died 34 years ago). I will now try and master it!

That looks like "this night" by Billy Joel to me!

DaffyDaffy · 02/06/2020 16:18

...Turns out he stole it from Beethoven! Who knew?!

BoxOfShapes · 02/06/2020 16:19

Not sure if these attachments will work - this is the sheet music for the 2nd mvt. It is from an out-of-copyright so ok to post.

Sorry, hadn't seen your reply when I posted the sheet music here. Glad you have it! I must remember to post on Mumsnet next time I have a tune in my head which I can't place!
ScarfLadysBag · 02/06/2020 16:21

Huzzah!

BoxOfShapes · 02/06/2020 16:21

PS how special to have your dad's copy and to be playing it now

Arcadia · 02/06/2020 16:22

The power of Mumsnet!
Disappointed that I can't really play it very well though!

Aww I came too late, and I am no music virtuoso, but I have just played your notes on my piano, and even I would have been able to recognise Beethovens Pathetique from what you have written @Arcadia. I really do salute your ability to hear a tune in your head and get it down on paper!

It was a great favourite of mine to play when I was a teen. I had a cat who used to love my piano playing and when she was dying, I played this tune partly to distract myself and partly to comfort her. It always makes me cry to play it now.

And yes, Billy Joel stole the tune for This Night.

belavi · 02/06/2020 16:24

Enjoy, it’s so lovely!

Guttersnipe · 02/06/2020 16:26

Keep practicing! I am no great musician and I can play it (until the theme changes! Can never get the next bit right!)

togglethis · 02/06/2020 16:29

My DD is learning this right now for her ARSM Diploma so it’s certainly not easy. Beautiful though, and I’m so glad you identified it.

cheesyrats · 02/06/2020 16:32

I can get rid of your earworm.

'Reach' by Steps has been going round in my head for days and I don't know why. Play that and I can guarantee that you will not be thinking of that piano tune any more. Grin

Guttersnipe · 02/06/2020 16:34

I believe I have it printed in a Grade 7 exam book, so that might give you an idea of the skill you need to play it. But I am sure most of that grade 7 comes from the middle bit which is far harder than the main tune.

Arcadia · 02/06/2020 16:38

Thanks everyone!
@Guttersnipe it's making me feel sad now, too. It's a very sad tune.
The weird thing is i may not have heard it for over 30 years as I haven't played much since being a teenager until this lockdown (I didn't even have the family piano for years).
I have no memory of actually playing it myself so it's possible is an auditory memory from that long ago,
Weird how this lockdown has brought my back some forgotten childhood memories!

@Guttersnipe I only reached grade 6 In violin and piano. It's all the flats that I need to get to grips with then I'll be okay!
I can play moonlight sonata but otherwise Beethoven is hard for me.

Thanks @cheesyrats I'll bear that in mind if I get desperate!

Shows what I know. Best not tell my teacher!

Caribbeanescape · 02/06/2020 19:10

I recognised it from your writing, but you already know it now. Smile

It's a lovely piece of music, definitely worth learning.

GuiltyBark · 02/06/2020 20:17

Delighted you found it! It's a cracker x
