I've just looked at my gro egg and its 29.5°C. I'm 30 weeks pregnant and have 2 kids who's rooms are the same temp (3&5) how can I cool the house down? I keep the windows open 24/7 and curtains closed so the sun isn't beaming through all day but nothing helps. I also have a big free standing fan which is pretty much just blowing hot air around. Worried about how this is going to be when baby comes in July/August too. Any suggestions please?

Try putting a bowl of ice in front of the fan. Also I shut the windows at the hottest part of the day.

Open the windows all night. Close them when the air outside is warmer than the air inside. Keep the sun out of the house, close the shutters if you have them. Not sure if curtains are effective as the heat is still coming through the windows.

Argos sell air conditioning units. They’re expensive though.

Today is going to be the last hot day. From tomorrow onwards the temperatures will be below average for June.

moldycashew · 02/06/2020 07:23

I'll try the windows shut today, I've not got shutters or anything. Just standard curtains. It's to be 25 here today Sad worse than yesterday. The house seems to be 5-7 degrees hotter than outside at all times, its unbearable

Also if anyone can recommend a decent air conditioner, please do

Yes it was bad. I really feel the heat. My flat is hot at the best of times. I sat on the bed in a towel to soak up the sweat! I was trying to clear up and my face and cleavage (and under boobs) were running with sweat!

Emmy2020 · 02/06/2020 08:27

@moldycashew I keep upstairs windows closed on day with curtains kept closed. A blanket over any light curtains to keep it dark. Fans in each room. Helps a bit. Still hot though but not as hot as if I kept it open. Maybe sleep downstairs? It’ll be a lot cooler than upstairs. Should get cooler from tomorrow though at least for a bit! I have been looking on amazon at the air conditioning units obvs the cheaper ones. I’m tempted to get one! I’m pregnant too and it’s just too hot at the moment!

Then you need to keep the sun out. Can you rig something to shade the windows? On very hot days (but I'm talking 35 degrees!) I close the shutters and then peg a couple of old towels over my clothes drying rack and angle it so that it shades the main window. I also have a sunshade and two umbrellas I move around during the day to shade the windows.
A friend traps a towel outside at the top and bottom of the sash windows and she says it helps.

If it's humid then a dehumidifier might help.

I am so delighted that it's going to cool off from tomorrow. I'm perimenopausal and have just been a sweaty mess in the hot weather.
I find spraying myself with water and then standing in front of the fan works in an emergency. Other than that, keep blinds of curtains closed, windows closed, and fans in each room.

SweetPetrichor · 02/06/2020 09:09

I sympathise. Our living room has essentially one big wall of windows and it is miserable in this heat. It was 18 degrees outside yesterday morning and 28 degrees in our flat. Today it's 16 degrees outside and 26 in the flat...gradually dropping but not fast enough. I don't have any helpful advice though. I invested in one of the dyson cool+purifying fans which is helping, but it's still unpleasant. Can't wait for the temperatures to drop further!

moldycashew · 02/06/2020 09:27

Just an update on the closing of the windows, its had the opposite effect. Upstairs was 30.5°C after closing the windows for about 45 mins. Its only half 9 😭 opened them back up and it's down to 30 now after about 10 mins. I thought it was because this house is a new build because I've not had this problem in any other house I've lived in but seems from reading online that alot of people suffer no matter what type of housing

But if you just close the windows and still let the sun hit them, then all you are doing is making a greenhouse. So it will get hotter.

moldycashew · 02/06/2020 09:48

Oh I see what you mean now from your original comment! So basically I can't really do anything about the windows except keep them open and curtains shut. I think I will just need to bite the bullet and get an air con. Seems like theres not really any decent ones from reviews unless you spent like £300+
