Books with dislikable characters

Ok so weird request, but I have noticed that I tend to quite like books with unlikable and even pretty loathsome characters - think Gone Girl, The Casual Vacancy, and more recently The Recovery of Rose Gold.

So - can anyone recommend any books in this vein (yes I know it’s a bit weird)

The Dice Man.

Absolution by I think Patrick Flanery

Normal People is one of the most badly written books I've read in 10 years. Baffling hype.

Poldark.

George warleggan is hideous.

I was reading a YA dystopia book that's quote popular. Basically all the kids are trapped in some sort of huge dome. Anyway, eventually, food started to run out and one of the female.characters especially.gets very anorexic and the man male protagonist noticed how "amazing" and "model thin" and "beautiful" she now looks. This is a popular book young boys and girls read and all the girls will take away is how being starving- thin is model-like and stunning. Was horrified at the message that was being sent.

Pamela. Awful protagonist.

YouJustDoYou · 01/06/2020 22:16

*main male. Damn autocorrect

MyHipsDontLieUnfortunately · 01/06/2020 22:19

Madame Bovary - I can't stand Emma Bovary.

GCAcademic · 01/06/2020 22:19

Wuthering Heights.

WinterAndRoughWeather · 01/06/2020 22:19

The Tailor of Panama (or any John Le Carre really).

Wolf Hall (and sequels).

Proper rogues galleries.

CharBart · 01/06/2020 22:20

Villette, Charlotte Bronte has a ‘difficult’ central character.

DamnYankee · 01/06/2020 22:21

Wuthering Heights.

I still can't understand why people think that story is so romantic.

Lolita, definitely.

Am with you on Wuthering Heights

Cider with Rosie.

Yes it's autobiographical, but my main memory of it was how unpleasant he came across.

Estella in Great Expectations

GiveMeTheGlueGunOrTheRatGetsIt · 01/06/2020 22:32

Just thought of more - Perfume by Patrick Suskind and The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. The Talented Mr Ripley by Patricia Highsmith. Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates

StillWeRise · 01/06/2020 22:33

totally agree wrt wuthering heights
I don't think the man in remains of the day is dislikable, exactly, I think he's quite tragic

MilleniumHallsWalledGarden · 01/06/2020 22:33

Strangers on a Train by Patricia Highsmith. I've just read it and Charles Bruno is still in my head, the weirdo.

PegasusReturns · 01/06/2020 22:34

When I read your title I immediately thought The Casual Vacancy which I loved and as I’ve scrolled down pretty much everything I can think of has been mentioned, so now I’m here for the recommendations Smile

In terms of Donna Tartt I particularly liked The Little Friend

Calmasasleepycat · 01/06/2020 22:37

The Sea, The Sea by Iris Murdoch. This is written in the first person by a selfish but interesting character, an ex theatre director. It’s quite a difficult read but well worth the effort.
