The George Floyd protests

The protests are not just about the outrage at 1 murder of 1 black persons. This is the rolling, building culmination of hundreds of years of murder of black and brown people.

And the attitudes of millions of people around the world. Covid has killed xxx thousand in the uk.

How many black people do you think fear for their lives every single day? How many racism based murders do you think have happened over the last 200 years? More than fucking covid.

And when covid is over black and brown people will still not be safe from murder.

In America black men risk their lives by
Going for a jog
Going birdwatching in a park
Driving to the shops
Peacefully protesting
Being in the wrong place at the wrong time
Just being there and being black, doing nothing wrong, living their lives.
They are being persecuted, beaten, arrested for all of the above things.

I absolutely agree OP.
The U.K. is not innocent, we should’ve protested after each and every death in custody here too and people are now realising that.

AlohaMolly · 31/05/2020 20:27

Yes OP.

The only thing shocking about the murder of George Floyd is that people are still shocked by murders like this. It is horrific, it is shameful, it is abhorrent, it is violent, it is devastating but it is also commonplace. The only time it is shocking is if you have been so shielded by your own privilege that it is not your reality - and that’s ok too, as long as you work to change that now you are aware.

Not you personally, OP...

It absolutely is privilege. And NIMBY, to suggest that the protests are unnecessary here/during covid.

Racism in America (and other places) is a pandemic of its own.

Some examples of black people murdered by the police:

Eric Garner had just broken up a fight, according to witness testimony.
Ezell Ford was walking in his neighborhood.
Michelle Cusseaux was changing the lock on her home's door when police arrived to take her to a mental health facility.
Tanisha Anderson was having a bad mental health episode, and her brother called 911.
Tamir Rice was playing in a park.
Natasha McKenna was having a schizophrenic episode when she was tazed in Fairfax, Va.
Walter Scott was going to an auto-parts store.
Bettie Jones answered the door to let Chicago police officers in to help her upstairs neighbor, who had called 911 to resolve a domestic dispute.
Philando Castile was driving home from dinner with his girlfriend.
Botham Jean was eating ice cream in his living room in Dallas.
Atatiana Jefferson was babysitting her nephew at home in Fort Worth, Texas.
Eric Reason was pulling into a parking spot at a local chicken and fish shop.
Dominique Clayton was sleeping in her bed.
Breonna Taylor was also asleep in her bed.
And George Floyd was at the grocery store.

Coco exactly. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-52868465
Very moving seeing so many people turning out to protest in England and Wales at such a time, and at personal risk.
