Has anyone bought a Kindle recently?

Can you advise me on what to buy? My kindle has finally given up the ghost. It was a first version so old. I have no idea what to buy now.

I had my old kindle for ages, the one with the keyboard buttons on the bottom. I loved it!

When it died I replaced it with a paperwhite, exactly the same reading experience.

Either get the paper white or the model down which is about the same but much cheaper.

They don’t have buttons anymore though which is a shame. I replaced my Voyage (which I lost and they don’t make anymore) for the new model that came out last year, it’s great but the touch screen isn’t as responsive as a phone which can be annoying.

We've all got Paperwhite ones and love them. So easy to use & set up.

BrigitsBigKnickers · 30/05/2020 19:16

I got the paper white waterproof one for Christmas. Brilliant! Really easy to read in all lights even bright sun.

Ginfordinner · 30/05/2020 19:27

If it is just for reading you can't beat a Paperwhite.

Rainb0w · 30/05/2020 20:28

Recently got my first kindle a paper white haven't put it down since.

I just bought the Oasis but it's not cheap! I use it a lot for work so wanted the extra features but my old one is a Paperwhite and it was really good, so I'd recommend the Paperwhite for sure.

I have a fire which is great for reading, downloading programmes, internet etc. Only downside is reading outside in the sun

itsgettingweird · 30/05/2020 21:40

I have the paper white. I'm so pleased with it. Easy to take in bag and read anywhere i go.

Can read in bed without a light.

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 30/05/2020 21:46

The Oasis has buttons.

I love the old kindle keyboard - kept buying them second-hand but recently decided to bite the bullet and get a new one. I went for the Oasis as I really wanted one with buttons, hate having to touch a screen to turn pages. It was expensive but it's been really good so far, I like that you can have the buttons either side, swap round the functions too, and the backlight on the screen, when you have it on, is changeable so you can have it yellow-toned for reading at night.

Paperwhite is the way to go. Miss having a proper keyboard (my previous one was that old Confused) but you get used to it really quickly.

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 30/05/2020 21:48

Oh - also it's waterproof so you can read it in the bath, which is great for me!

Guacamole · 30/05/2020 21:50

I have a paperwhite - it’s perfect.

minielise · 30/05/2020 21:56

I have the newest cheap version, it’s brilliant! It’s not waterproof but if you put it in a sealable food bag you can read in the bath Grin you can still easily change the pages

zhivagodr · 30/05/2020 21:57

Paper white so you can read outside in the sun with glare Smile

Tiggles · 30/05/2020 21:59

I have a paperwhite. Pondered for ages what to get for ds for Christmas. In the end went for the cheaper one. It now has lighting that makes it just as usable as the paperwhite. I'd replace with the cheaper one for me now if mine ever dies.

sueelleker · 31/05/2020 14:25

I bought a Paperwhite after my original gave up. Unfortunately I left it on the coffee table and my dog chewed it, just after lockdown.
I'm hoping the screen can be replaced, otherwise I'll be on my third one!
I bought my first one to take on holiday, instead of packing paperback books, when the airline luggage limit was reduced.

michaelbaubles · 31/05/2020 14:27

My old one conked out - I contacted Amazon help on chat just in case I was missing anything - anyway they couldn't help but did give me a code for 15% off a new one, which was nice. So worth doing!

Youcunnyfunt · 31/05/2020 14:35

Paperwhite, it’s brilliant! I do miss the keyboard but generally it works well (the library is slightly different as well, for filing the books, I had to change the way I stored the books as I keep unread by genres and “completed” separately).

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 31/05/2020 15:05

The cheapest one is just the last version of the paperwhite and isn’t much different to the new paperwhite.

Michaelbaubles · 31/05/2020 15:43

I agree - I just got the cheapest one as a replacement and it’s pretty much the same as the Paperwhite tbh. I couldn’t see any difference. (The Paperwhite I thought was dead came back to life so I kept the new one for DC and they’re almost identical).

BakewellTarts · 31/05/2020 15:44

Another vote for the Oasis. I like the buttons!

JacobReesMogadishu · 31/05/2020 15:46

I replaced my keyboard one with the new cheaper one last year. It’s the old paperwhite, so can be read outside, etc. It’s just not waterproof. I didn’t need to pay extra for that.
