What job would you describe as an 'extremely good' job?

My FIL has been telling people DH and I have 'extremely good' jobs. I will reveal what they are (within reason) within the thread but wondered what job and salary you would describe as extremely good? The reason I ask as it's meant the people he's told have ended up costing more than they would have done if he'd been realistic/honest to them so there is a consequence in his perception of our jobs.

Depends on whether you value salary or contribution to society.

Kinlocrhum · 30/05/2020 12:37

That's quite an open ended question.
Every job has it's own worth in society.
What one person values as extremely good will be very different to the next.

TerfTerfTerf · 30/05/2020 12:38

If he's anything like my in-laws (snobs) your jobs might be
University lecturer
Pilot
Architect
Solicitor
Doctor
Company director
Nothing public sector, accountancy or estate agent, as they're 'common'Grin

Fameinaframe · 30/05/2020 12:39

I am a primary teacher and I think my job is extremely good. Many on here would not agree!
I love my job and could not imagine doing anything else. Grin

itbemay1 · 30/05/2020 12:39

A good job for me is one that you enjoy that affords you the lifestyle you desire.

AnotherBoredOne · 30/05/2020 12:40

What do mean op?

NiceTwin · 30/05/2020 12:40

An extremely good job to me would be limited hours for above average remuneration.
So more life than work.

Anything with mad hours just wouldn't be classed as good in my opinion.

Blogdog · 30/05/2020 12:41

Wow @TerfTerfTerf your in laws have strange ideas. I’m a chartered accountant and was earning well into six figures at 30. Not suggesting it’s an ‘extremely good’ job for all but has been very good for me.

GreyishDays · 30/05/2020 12:42

If he’s meaning purely salary, I’d think for outside London, if you’re both say 40, that extremely good jobs would be £60k+, each.

Spied · 30/05/2020 12:42

Power
Status
High salary
Not necessarily stress-free but obviously a bonus
Autonomy

Spied · 30/05/2020 12:43

50K+

MrsSnitchnose · 30/05/2020 12:44

For me, it would be one that you enjoy doing, regardless of pay. You could be earning massive amounts of money and be completely miserable all day. I wouldn't describe a job like that as being a good one

YesItsMeIDontCare · 30/05/2020 12:45

Depends what your FIL means by "a good job".

I'd say my dad had a good job - aeronautical engineer in a big company (working in design I think), middle management level which gave him a decent work/life balance, and a salary that enabled us to have a decent quality of life. He retired on a bloody good pension at 55.

HauntedGoatFart · 30/05/2020 12:46

I wouldn't really put salary on the scale much, except that I'd probably rule out something with long hours and sub-30k salary from being "extremely good".

But otherwise - something highly skilled and intellectually engaging, which pays a decent wage and perhaps offers opportunities for progression.

thatsallineed · 30/05/2020 12:46

An extremely good job for many would be one reasonably well paid so you aren't worried about how the hell to pay the gas bill, where there's job security and no threat of ever being made redundant (what used to be called a job for life), and a good pension to look forward to.

For other people it's all about the perceived prestige and the big salary.

Your FIL sounds like a snob, so I'm guessing the latter.

Oblomov20 · 30/05/2020 12:46

Something you enjoy.
£60k+

LittleRa · 30/05/2020 12:48

When I imagine an older relative telling their friends that that son, daughter or grandkids have “a very good job” I think a large part of it would be down to job security- i.e. on a permanent contract, with a pension etc. Maybe something that relates to the degree the person has done. Obviously a higher salary too. I’m not saying this is what I see as a good job, but what I would imagine an older FIL wanting to tell people.

CovidicusRex · 30/05/2020 12:49

I guess most people mean well paid and so prestigious that it will guarantee you well paid jobs for the rest of your life or a good network of you decide you want to start your win business instead of having a job. So things like working for a top global firm/company/bank, American Ivy League university, private sector doctor etc.

CovidicusRex · 30/05/2020 12:52

@TerfTerfTerf accountancy more common than being a doctor or a university lecturer?

metalkprettyoneday · 30/05/2020 12:52

If I hard ‘ extremely’ good job. I’d imagine something above the ordinary accountant / lawyer / doctor . Something involving travel, maybe high up in an organisation like the UN ? Or film producer ? Something that if you found out your neighbour did it you’d be “ wow ! “ and feel you had a boring job :)

VirginWestCoast · 30/05/2020 12:54

My parents say this about me and my siblings but they are very much the As Long As You're Happy typesSmile
Out of me and my siblings there is a:
Boxing Coach
Accountant
Mechanic
Make up artist (primarily for theatre)
English Teacher
Midwife
Drama Teacher (does workshops with children and young adults with additional needs. There is a specific job title but I'd have to ask him).
School caretaker

None of us are particularly highly paid but we're all happy in our jobs and our parents are happy that we're happy.

copycopypaste · 30/05/2020 12:55

I'd class a good job as something that you really enjoy and pays a decent wage

GreyishDays · 30/05/2020 12:56

That’s lovely to read, Virgin
Smile

Pelleas · 30/05/2020 12:56

Any job you actually enjoy doing.

NotKeenOnSwede · 30/05/2020 12:57

I'd say the kind of thing men lie about on dating profiles!

Doctor
Surgeon
Pilot
Music producer

Etc
