What job would you describe as an 'extremely good' job?

My FIL has been telling people DH and I have 'extremely good' jobs. I will reveal what they are (within reason) within the thread but wondered what job and salary you would describe as extremely good? The reason I ask as it's meant the people he's told have ended up costing more than they would have done if he'd been realistic/honest to them so there is a consequence in his perception of our jobs.

Are you saying you've been charged more for products/services because your relative has implied you're better off financially than you really are??

ItsNotAGameOfSubbuteoMatthew · 30/05/2020 13:26

Yeah he's definitely a snob and it definitely relates to salary not social value. He was showing off to friends whose DC did work for us. We now realise we've been massively overcharged because FIL was showing off about our 'extremely good jobs'.

@SeriouslyRetro you are absolutely right!

What kind of work didn't he do for you?

Were you happy with the price you agreed on beforehand the work began?

SeriouslyRetro · 30/05/2020 13:28

*did he do

Bloody predictive text!

SerendipitySunshine · 30/05/2020 13:29

What was the work you had done?

SerendipitySunshine · 30/05/2020 13:30

For me, an extremely good job is one where you enjoy most days.

SunbathingDragon · 30/05/2020 13:31

To me an extremely good job would be one I loved that also allowed my family to live happily. For some people an extremely good job could be one that is term time only, wfh, and fully flexible hours, that pays minimum wage.

If you are looking at it from a monetary point of view (and I live in a commuter village in the SE so appreciate this isn’t reflective of the rest of the country) I’d say £500k+ for extremely good whereas a good job would be £100k+. However, it largely comes down to lifestyle and what your salary allows you to afford as there is no point earning £1mil when your outgoings are £1.25mil. A mortgage free home that is comfortable for someone’s needs can be the equivalent of earning a significant salary.

DustyMaiden · 30/05/2020 13:33

I would think you earned 100k plus. Enjoyment is not relevant within the parameters of your question.
It should not matter if you are a multi millionaire, you should still be charged the going rate.

Grasspigeons · 30/05/2020 13:34

One with good terms and conditions not just pay. So my previous job i had healthcare, pension, subsidised canteen, match funding of charitable donations, staff christmas do fully paid for, churstmss bonus, 35 days annual leave. It was interesting and i worked 9-5. Mybpay was national average but all the 'looking after the employees' stuff made it good.

ItsNotAGameOfSubbuteoMatthew · 30/05/2020 13:34

The work might be outing but it was professional services from someone we trust and had no frame of reference for price but trusted the DC. We've since found out it is almost twice what others similarly qualified charge. The DC laughing said 'well you do have extremely good jobs!' Obviously we queried where on earth they'd heard that but from FIL apparently

It's tricky to know if he in particular overcharged you, or if his rates are higher than his competitors.

But it could well be that Harry Enfield 'I saw you coming' sketch scenario.

Lifeaback · 30/05/2020 13:38

I frequently get told I have a good job and get lots of the the ‘wow’ comments that @metalkprettyoneday mentions. My pay is high, I get to pick what jobs I work on so it’s flexible, I’m well regarded within my field and above all else I love what I do. I work in the film industry so I don’t think it would be classed by people like your FIL as a good job though!

Scarydinosaurs · 30/05/2020 13:38

Not your FIL fault. He is obviously proud of you- but that doesn’t make it okay for people to overcharge you.

LonginesPrime · 30/05/2020 13:38

IMO, anyone going round boasting that a relative has an 'extremely good job' says far more about themselves and their values than they do about the person they're talking about. It usually makes them look a bit twatty.

Unless of course, there's a context (e.g. reassuring someone that their exam grades are fine as x got those grades and is doing well for himself).

mopsue · 30/05/2020 13:39

@Megan2018 how old are you though if you don't mind me asking? You need to earn a lot these days to have anything near those kind of benefits. Her boss retired with a pension pot worth at least 1m

@lojoko Imo 100k is an extremely good salary for a women because so few earn that (think it's less than 1%).

PuppyMonkey · 30/05/2020 13:39

Never mind querying where they heard about your jobs, did you query the price/refuse to pay?

NiceTwin · 30/05/2020 13:40

@TerfTerfTerf university lecturer seems a bit at odds in your list Confused

ClementineTangerine · 30/05/2020 13:40

For me "extremely good jobs" assuming it means salary and prestige would be

  • Surgeon
  • Barrister
  • Hedge fund manager
  • Investment banker
  • Board member of a public company
  • Whatever the top ranks of the police are called

Those are what popped into my head straight away when I read your OP

mopsue · 30/05/2020 13:51

A lawyer in a magic circle firm could be on 500k plus, a partner for the Big 4 300k plus.

However in terms of PAYE apparently only 321,000 people earn 150k plus & 40% of these live in London.

31,000 earn more than a million.

babynamesarehard · 30/05/2020 13:58

@mopsue and based on these threads on here, every single person who earns 6 figures must be a mumsnet user as I'm constantly seeing people posting about how much they earn!

TerfTerfTerf · 30/05/2020 14:03

Yes my in-laws are indeed strange! (And I no longer see them) For them it's all about the background to the job (ie a degree or a lot of professional training), as well as a decent salary, and also the amount of "respect" it garners. They disapprove of public sector, think everything should be privatised, and despise accountants because they're money-grubbing, apparently, and of course it's common to talk about money Hmm
They would also add to the list a writer or film director.
My DH does "an extremely good job" they respect, but I don't, and never have. They think I'm not good enough for him. And are encouraging my DC into jobs they think are "acceptable".

I love my job and think it's "very good", as it's flexible, my colleagues and manager are brilliant, we have a good Christmas do, and lots of perks. But it's just above minimum wage and it's within the NHS...

Horses for courses!

mopsue · 30/05/2020 14:04

well I guess that those threads attract people who earn more & perhaps not all of them are in the UK. I'm sure some are exaggerating though.

Splodgetastic · 30/05/2020 14:15

@SunbathingDragon, I would love a job paying 500K, but what sort of job would that be? Think I'm in the wrong line of work... I am earning about half of what I maxed out at due to not liking stress, except I still have the stress so taking the pay cut seems a bit pointless. Was still nowhere near 500K though. Sorry to derail thread OP. To me a good job is one that is remunerative and intellectually engaging, but a very good job would also come with lower stress levels. Obviously these things are generally mutually exclusive. But I suppose I would think traditional professions (not prostitution). Or something really geeky and high paid in IT. Or investment banker.

ItsNotAGameOfSubbuteoMatthew · 30/05/2020 14:15

Fortunately DH has no shame (and has known this DC his whole life) and said he had found out we should have been being charged more like X. DC was kind of embarrassed/indignant to have been fooled by FIL and caught out by DH. Obviously we're not seeing FIL at the moment but DH speaks to him every week or so. Will be interested to hear what he says when DH asks him why he thinks that about us.
