What job would you describe as an 'extremely good' job?

My FIL has been telling people DH and I have 'extremely good' jobs. I will reveal what they are (within reason) within the thread but wondered what job and salary you would describe as extremely good? The reason I ask as it's meant the people he's told have ended up costing more than they would have done if he'd been realistic/honest to them so there is a consequence in his perception of our jobs.

I think an extremely good job is one where if you have a meeting, they bring in sandwiches.

Asuitablecat · 30/05/2020 12:58

Depends on.their situation, surely? For my parents, who left school.at 15 and 16, a good job was one that didn't involve a weekly salary and was one you got a pension with. It was also.something neither of them ever thought they could have. In their eyes, I have a very good job.

Megan2018 · 30/05/2020 12:58

Anything professional like Doctor, Dentist, Barrister, Actuary
or
Salaries of £100k+ outside London

I have what I class as a “good” job, but it’s not extremely good.

7ofNine · 30/05/2020 12:59

I'd say it's one that you're v well suited for, salary doesn't come into it. Though I don't rank people's worth on their salary either!

Tulipstulips · 30/05/2020 13:01

One that you enjoy, and that pays enough for you live as you like to live and is flexible enough to you to fulfil any responsibilities you have.

jjesquire · 30/05/2020 13:01

In my mind an "extremely good" job would be one where you wouldn't mind doing it for free because you enjoy it and getting paid is a bonus

FAQs · 30/05/2020 13:03

I agree with @Squirrellamp

I’ve had this discussion with my father this week, I’ve got a well paid corporate job, pretty secure in terms of not likely to be redundant etc, however have applied for a job 35% less and will have to use savings to top it up for a year of so, my father thinks I’m mad but it’s a job I want to do. I’ll be able to progress in it but it’s more community minded than money driven decision.

Disfordarkchocolate · 30/05/2020 13:03

Having had a few jobs now I'm over 50, an extremely good job is one you look forward to doing.

myredcardiganbob · 30/05/2020 13:04

Anything that requires at least an undergrad degree to be able to do plus the membership of a professional association in order to be allowed to do the job.

FrenchFancie · 30/05/2020 13:06

Lol my parents would be:
Surgeon
Other doctor
Judge
Barrister
Solicitor
Accountant

It’s the holy trinity of medicine/ law / accountancy

Not sure if dentistry would fit into medical or not.

My parents are odd.

lojoko · 30/05/2020 13:08

Very Senior Civil Servant, MP, VP/MD level in finance, CEO, FAANG SWE.

Nighttimefreedom · 30/05/2020 13:08

Assuming extremely good is better than very good, I'd assume they meant hospital doctor or surgeon, top lawyer or some sort of high flying executive director. As a PP said, a sort of prestigious job.
Not sure I understood the second part of the post about who he's told though.

mopsue · 30/05/2020 13:09

I think there is quite a wide scope for this. Someone earning 200k a yr is obviously getting paid well but those jobs are often quite high risk in terms of redundancy etc. I know a barrister who works ridiculous hours.

The people I know with good work life balance jobs are pretty much all public sector. One friend in our group has one of the lower salaries (approx 50k) however she went straight into civil service at 18, so has a fantastic pension. Been doing flexi hours for at least a decade. Works 4 days a wk & has 7 wks holidays. Crucially having children hasn't held her back and she got fantastic maternity pay, pay rises whilst on maternity, return to work bonus & they recently paid for her to do a degree. She also bought a house in London whilst we were all at uni so probably will be the most comfortable of all of us.

VashtaNerada · 30/05/2020 13:10

To me, when someone talks about someone having an “extremely good” job I would assume a salary of £100k ish. For someone who grew up in poverty though, anything with regular work might count as “extremely good” so teacher, postal worker, train driver etc.

Twickerhun · 30/05/2020 13:11

For my family an extremely good job wouldn’t be about salary but would be related to social impact so a research scientist developing life and saving affordable vaccines or a palliative care nurse etc.

mopsue · 30/05/2020 13:13

Salaries of £100k+ outside London

You can always rely on these posts on Mumsnet. 100k in London is still a good salary, particularly for women. I think only 155,000 women earn that & above which is a tiny figure.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 30/05/2020 13:13

My parents would mean something that requires letters after your name (not just a degree) my parents in law would mean a job with the council....

PuppyMonkey · 30/05/2020 13:15

The reason I ask as it's meant the people he's told have ended up costing more than they would have done if he'd been realistic/honest to them

What are you on about OP? Confused

A good job to me is a secure, reliable job - doctor, lawyer, accountant, admin job, IT. Something like that.

Megan2018 · 30/05/2020 13:16

@mopsue with the exception of a house in London I am the same. Public sector, £50k salary, 8 weeks holiday. Amazing pension (20 years final salary, rest average salary). Flexible, family friendly, excellent work life balance. Have 2 houses as bought the first very young.
It’s a good job for sure. Not extremely though Smile

lojoko · 30/05/2020 13:18

She didn't say good though, she said extremely good. 100k in London is good but it's not extreme.

VirginWestCoast · 30/05/2020 13:19

. I think only 155,000 women earn that & above which is a tiny figure.
And all of them are on Mumsnet!

VirginWestCoast · 30/05/2020 13:21

Isn't the average for London 35k or thereabouts? If that is the case then 100k is an extremely good salary.

Lockdownlooks · 30/05/2020 13:23

Extremely good from prestige- high salary, advancement, seen as hard to get into - Doctors, commercial lawyers, university lecturers, accountants

Extremely good for society - caters, legal aid lawyers, some charity work, cleaners

Extremely good for me - work I enjoy, colleagues I like and good, understanding, management. Reasonable but not large salary. Ideally job security, not sure anyone had that now

Lockdownlooks · 30/05/2020 13:23

carers not caters

lojoko · 30/05/2020 13:24

Well, it depends on the range really.

If most people are not famous and ten people have been in the local paper, are they extremely famous? Or are they just more famous than most people?
