Our voting station could easily spread people out and I’ve never seen it busy. I can’t see why we can’t encourage postal voting and have properly distanced queues by next year. Plus some evidence suggests the virus is weakening and spread is lessening in other countries so by next year we should be in a very different place. I honestly think they’d be open to legal challenge (maybe by welsh conservatives?) if they tried this one.

I’m resigned to no school until September now. I’m very unhappy about it but I can’t see that there’s any chance of dd (yr3) going back before then.

However, it’s dd’s first play with a friend since lockdown today. I can’t wait to hear them laughing so feeling good today!

Shodan · 01/06/2020 13:19

@Jourdain11 Good luck for today lovely.

I had to sit on my hands to stop posting more on that thread because one certain poster was really making me cross and I was about to resort to name-calling Grin I think it's a good thing that your DD wasn't intimidated by a stranger scolding her, and stood up for herself.

You would need spaces the size of aircraft hangars to socially distance an election count, notwithstanding all the other issues. You also need to be close to others to check what they are doing. There is lots of working in pairs to avoid errors and potential corruption, including at polling stations.

Ours takes up a massive space in normal circumstances, and there are about 300 staff on duty, plus politicians and agents. You have to agree that boxes are empty with agents which you can’t do at distance and they monitor the counting which also requires them to be close. Take that away and you take away democracy.

Jourdain11 · 01/06/2020 13:32

To be fair though, if you take away the election, you also take away democracy!

People may be looking forward to voting against Mark Drakeford and Wee Nicola next year 😃 It would be a pity if they got an extra year, gratis...

MagdaS · 01/06/2020 13:33

I’m one of those people you see running round behind the count staff - in fact if you watched last year’s local election coverage on the BBC you’d have seen me.

MagdaS · 01/06/2020 13:37

To be fair though, if you take away the election, you also take away democracy!

That’s very true!

I enjoy election counts, not least that you get a bit of extra cash for it. It‘a great to see democracy in action.

@Teacupdrama

That number of people in hospital in Scotland is confirmed and unconfirmed combined. The even better news is that there is under 750 with confirmed COVID in hospital 😀

DominaShantotto · 01/06/2020 13:45

Nice dementory list of demands just arrived from the youngest's school - to prepare them for the change to bubbles today... well it would be nice if it had arrived before 2pm! Whole undercurrent of "we don't want these kids here" from it - I'm kind of ignoring that because I know the staff will be ignoring that tone and just getting on with it but I'm sick of being lectured in MY fucking inbox like I'M a naughty schoolchild incapable of thinking! I did my years sat outside the head teacher's office.

enjoyingSun · 01/06/2020 13:48

I did wonder about counting taking place over longer time period and a change in produres but I suppose that's the same issue - increases risk of tampering and fraud.

TBH though if we don't get a second wave and the number do go down I'm sure the Welsh ministers would look again at it and hold them as soon as possible.

PatriciaHolm · 01/06/2020 13:52

I am currently sitting a park, with a takeaway coffee and a sandwich. There are 2 people sitting on a park bench about 15 metres away and a handful of small groups about - peers - 100 m away. You can practically see the death shed.

Time for my Death Scone, i think.

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 01/06/2020 13:56

Is it bad that I'm glad mine don't automatically treat all stupid adults as if they are God?

God, no. I think it is far healthier to produce children who have a sense of self-respect and who can spot when someone (of any age) is not behaving well. There is being polite and then there is being someone who is ripe for being pushed around.

I really hope your treatment goes well today.

justasking111 · 01/06/2020 13:56

Wales police were all over the beaches in Llandudno like a rash throwing folk off because guidelines do not come into effect until midnight. I was pretty disgusted but the local dementors were thrilled.

Dowser · 01/06/2020 14:01

How about anti dementors announce the end of snitching and curtain twitching..yeeha!

2ndtimearound2020 · 01/06/2020 14:16

I have really tried hard with people who are scared of the virus. I really try to be balanced and think things through and make reasoned suggestions and opinions and I have a couple of friends on FB and see some of the posts here that really make me despair.

A question? So people really think this or is this a troll?

""VelveteenBunni
I really do think they are trying to kill us as pp's have said.
This is a shambles."

Does this person really think 'they' are tying to kill her and others - or is this a troll trying to upset people or just wind up the rational?

I really do wonder why post that.

GoldenOmber · 01/06/2020 14:18

I know a lot of usually sensible people who do genuinely believe the government wants to kill huge numbers of people, yes. Including a theory that the Tories want to kill off old people (who VOTE FOR THEM ffs!). I think they are just very scared and not thinking entirely straight.

Dowser · 01/06/2020 14:23

How about anti dementors announce the end of snitching and curtain twitching..yeeha!

That was for a new thread title btw..sun going to head

Yeeha!

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 01/06/2020 14:36

I’d be happy to take the risk and volunteer for a count to make sure the election takes place. Even if we can’t strictly social distance I’d be fine with this. Democracy matters.

DominaShantotto · 01/06/2020 14:39

I’m in the car in Aldi car park waiting for dh and watching the distanced queue and the spacing and body language is totally reminding me of the bit in The Full Monty where they’re all waiting at the job centre in line.

I now am half expecting them to break into a strip routine

Bollss · 01/06/2020 14:45

domina I always think of that scene when I'm bloody queueing Grin

DominaShantotto · 01/06/2020 14:52

Just got to the little ones school- they’ve put hazard tape all over the outdoor play equipment. Just sheer spite and needing to be seen to be doing “stuff”.

Hoping dd has had a decent day at least despite the head’s best efforts

heroku · 01/06/2020 14:53

I really do think they are trying to kill us as pp's have said.

I'm also very confused by this. No one is forcing shielded people to go outside are they? I thought they were just saying you can see someone at 2m if you want to. I would understand that it would be wrong to force shielding people back into jobs where they are at risk.

The idea that the government wants to kill vulnerable people is nuts - we've literally shut down our economy in order to keep those people safe.

NUFC69 · 01/06/2020 14:59

Jourdain, I think your daughter sounds ace - I really couldn't believe some of the posts on your thread. I haven't been in a shop since lockdown, so have no idea what it's like, but two children helping their daddy, it's likely to have made me smile. (I am afraid I am one of those awful older women who talks to anyone, but especially children with their parents).

Lovely here so my DD, SiL and two DGC are coming round for strawberry pavlova and Prosecco later.

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 01/06/2020 15:02

@heroku - I don’t understand the narrative either. We’ve suspended pretty much all our rights, our children’s education, safeguarding to a large degree, the nhs and other health services (except COVID related), our relationships (except online) for the best part of 3 months in Wales. Until today it was illegal for me to see my family or even drive a short distance to exercise. Holidays and social events have been abandoned. At what point will I have sacrificed enough? Can’t people see this can’t continue until we’re ‘safe’? My life has shown me you’re never really safe and things can change in a second but it’s never made me want to stop others from doing things. In fact the thing my life has really shown me is that you need to enjoy it while you can!

Willow2017 · 01/06/2020 15:17

Is it bad that I'm glad mine don't automatically treat all stupid adults as if they are God?
Nope good for her i say. Adults are not always right and should be reminded of that.

Willow2017 · 01/06/2020 15:18

Fingers crossed toady went well Jourdain11
