I'm one of the many people reporting symptoms to the COVID-19 app - and they have a very informative and detailed website, which is worth a look covid.joinzoe.com/post/covid-cases-england . People self-report, but they have just done a study where they've tested a selection of those people - so they can start to really get an idea of what proportion of people are infected, broken down on a regional/district basis. It is reported in a non-alarmist way, so although they are estimating 9,900 new cases a day, they break that down on a regional basis per million. And use that to calculate the number of active cases in each district/county. When I looked earlier today, my particular district was supposed to have 200-sh cases within its 100,000 population. Its a great way of seeing the risk in context.

Dowser · 30/05/2020 21:26

Wow, your gravestone..don’t let on you’ll have the local dowsers round wanting to do their stuff lol

Thank you for all good wishes re my son and his client.

I never class myself as a healer, I’m not powerful enough for that, but I do lots of healing work

As of tonight, all my family are on Individual healing energy patterns.
I’ve been doing special stuff for my son since this all broke anyway so I’m pretty sure we will all be ok
Such a nuisance though.
Family picnic is cancelled

BarkandCheese · 30/05/2020 21:26

I think we need to know more about the cave full of random animal bones!

My house is listed but it’s not remotely interesting, all the houses on my side of the street were built in the Victorian era as examples of possible labourers cottages. Some are quite pretty with fancy brickwork but mine is the most bland, if it wasn’t part of the whole project it would never be listed. The listing was only done a complete of years before we moved in and it includes everything which was there at the time. So the uPVC conservatory is listed.

AnxiousElephant77 · 30/05/2020 21:29

Makes sense, thank you.

Pootle40 · 30/05/2020 21:31

@Mascotte

I could have written exactly what you did! Nobody seems to be questioning the two days at school. I feel like I'm on another planet! There is certainly no need for this to be a blanket decision across the whole of Scotland. Why would a child in Orkney not go to full time to school?? I'm in Fife and raging as it is.

Pootle40 · 30/05/2020 21:32

@TitianaTitsling

Interesting. Not had one of those!

Cattermole · 30/05/2020 21:33

@TheCountessofFitzdotterel and we would have got away with it if it hadn't been for those pesky kids!

@NothingIsWrong I'm using a drop spindle rather than anything so technically advanced as a wheel. (If I hadn't already outed myself as a re-enactor I just did....) Fortunately mum wants chunky wool so that's good.

I too love spinning. It is very meditative. Of all things I think I have learned patience, these past weeks.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 30/05/2020 21:37

Drop spindles are good too. What period do you reenact? I do 15th and 16th century.
Of all the crafts I do, spinning is the best for mental health imo.

Pootle40 · 30/05/2020 21:39

I did lots of buffoonish behaviour today.....took my children back to their favourite ice cream shop (albeit they had to wait outside!). My husband went to the garden centre. I booked a holiday on booking.com. It's a free cancellation one and as Jersey is not letting anyone in currently I expect to cancel it as it's only 5 weeks away. I may book a number of free cancellation options and hope for the best !

Cattermole · 30/05/2020 21:48

Roman and 17th century, Countess, but am looking to get more into the 16th century too in the confident hope of events next year.
It's very selfish of me but I worry - so much as I worry about anything - about the future of many hobby groups after this summer, and the ending of the casual friendships that often arise from them.

Weedsnseeds1 · 30/05/2020 21:49

SirSamuelVimes caves full of extinct animal bones are fairly commonplace in these parts. This one is a little different as the house was owned by a Victoria Bishop od Bath and Wells. When the cave was discovered, he decided it was proof of Noah's flood.
He pimped the place out with grottos, follies, fake Greek temples and whatnot and wrote bad poetry about it:
"Here where once Druids trod, in times of yore,And stain'd their altars with a victim's gore,Here now the Christian, ransomed from above,Adores a God of mercy and of love."
"Here let the scoffer of God's Holy Word, Behold the traces of a deluged world"
And so on.
It was a very popular day out and proceeds went to the school.
The current owners have an open day every year, where you can have a wander around.
They have a 2.5m high, 80 000 year old bear skeleton too, although the skull is in the county museum.

NothingIsWrong · 30/05/2020 21:50

I have recently attempted nalbinding. It is a lot harder than I thought it was...

Cattermole · 30/05/2020 21:53

It's all right when you get the hang of it Nothing isn't it? - it doesn't unrave when you take it around! I freaked some people out rather badly last summer on the beach near where I live by whipping out a three inch needle and a nalbinding sock Grin

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 30/05/2020 21:55

Yes, it’s a worry of mine as well. The fucked up economy is going to have less spare money to pay for people to prance about in silly clothes at special events. I also expect quite a few of the people who make their living making things for reenactors will struggle to stay afloat.
However (in keeping with the anti dementor theme) I am optimistic things will continue just on a different financial basis. If paid events dry up my medieval group can do things for free - we would have to pay subs and buy our own food for events, which currently we don’t need to do. But on the other hand that way we would have more choice where we would like to play rather than being limited to who can afford us.
It will all be fine!

BakewellTarts · 30/05/2020 21:57

@Weedsnseeds1 is that the baby bashing bishop of Bath and Wells? (Sorry off topic...)

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 30/05/2020 21:57

I made my first nalbound hat this year! I love the patterns it makes.

MinnieMountain · 30/05/2020 21:59

I gave in and argued with a dementor on FB this evening. Apparently Peterborough is a hot spot purely because it's a city.

DH has come over to the dark side Grin He's coming with me and DS to meet up with a friend and her DS tomorrow despite rigidly sticking to the rules so far.

Weedsnseeds1 · 30/05/2020 21:59

Interesting to hear about the secret society of spinners and re-enactors Smile
I have an interest in medieval cookery, but I conduct my experiments at home!

Weedsnseeds1 · 30/05/2020 22:01

No, a different one BakewellTarts Grin

NothingIsWrong · 30/05/2020 22:02

I took two of mine to see their friends today. On a farm. We had an illicit dip in the pool, cuddled some puppies and I had a fab chat with my friend.

Allflightscancelled · 30/05/2020 22:07

A quick lockdown win for me! I've coerced my very reluctant 16 yr old to cut my hair. She'd never cut hair before, watched a very confusing how-to video and eventually decided to just go for it, after I promised not to shout about the result. God bless her, it's a lot shorter than I wanted but it's probably the neatest I've looked in about ten years Grin

Dowser · 30/05/2020 22:08

I’ve just read an interesting article that Covid May be a bacterium
Don’t know how true it is

Cattermole · 30/05/2020 22:09

Maybe we ought to start a new thread for The Secret Life Of Re-Enactors :-D I feel a bit guilty about hijacking this one now!
I never made a nalbinding hat (socks and mittens) but I do have a felted statute cap that I made for funsies a year or so back and I LOVE it.

TheGinGenie · 30/05/2020 22:11

I'm so fed up of everyone determined there's going to be a second wave. We just don't know this and it seems like this isn't happening in other countries is it? Or after VE Day when everyone was convinced everyone would die? Am I missing something? I'm still being sensible but it's SO NICE to see my friends and family and boyfriend again. I have friends who are scared to go outside and we just can't live like this

Weedsnseeds1 · 30/05/2020 22:12

Dowser I think that theory has been debunked, I'm not quite sure where it started, but it's definately a virus.
