Unusual fears and phobias?

Aclh13 · 29/05/2020 23:46

I was interested to see people's unusual fears or phobias and how crazy they can get, I have a serious phobia of other people's Germs, ie no sharing of utensils of any kind, if someone offers me a bite of their food I gag, can't sit on old furniture of any kind it's creeps me out, I absolutely can't sleep in hotels unless the beds look virtually new ect. A family member has an irrational fear of wooden lollipop sticks, they cry when they are even near them!

I can't walk on drains so I avoid them even if it means bumping into people

Also if I'm on a bridge and there's a train line underneath and a train is coming I have to wait til the train has gone before walk ing over

Sticklebricks.

Beat that Grin

(I have a haptic memory of chewing it as a toddler, and the fingers going between my teeth. Just typing that makes me shudder)

IHateCoronavirus · 30/05/2020 09:22

Those of you scared of lots of holes don’t, whatever you do, google ‘lotus breast’ Envy not envy

IHateCoronavirus · 30/05/2020 09:23

Stairs with no backs I was watching something on TV that had a spiral staircase it was all open and it made me feel sick. Fungi on trees urgh I come over all queasy. I eat mushrooms fine so I dunno what that's about.

SassyCat3 · 30/05/2020 09:31

Another person with fear of holes. Certain things make my blood run cold and itch all over.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 30/05/2020 10:16

The word figure creeps me out

MadCattery · 30/05/2020 13:33

I was going to post a photo of a lotus seed pod, but the idea makes me ill. I saw the lotus breast photo once. It’s the stuff of nightmares.

Zaphodsotherhead · 30/05/2020 14:22

I'm an emetophobe (or I was, but it seems to be improving with age, luckily).

My main phobia (clears throat because it's utterly ridiculous) is being seen with my slippers on. I've had to buy Uggs to wear round the house (boot type) or other similar outdoor-looking shoes because I am absolutely terrified of someone coming to the door when I am wearing bedroom slippers. If I did have slippers on I'd have to kick them off before answering the door and absolutely NEVER go out into the garden in them.

I will answer the door in my pyjamas - but never, ever in bedroom slippers. Makes me feel shivery and vulnerable even thinking about it.
And I have absolutely no idea why.

exerciseinmypyjamas · 30/05/2020 14:46

Needles and teeth, especially rotten ones.
I can clean up pretty much anything in this house and do, but DH gets the teeth.
Needles wise it's got to the point now when I have to be sedated for any medical treatment that involves needles.
Dentists- they can look. No scraping, no poking and nothing else-ing.

I know exactly where its come from as well- a butcher of a dentist when I was younger who got 2 nurses to hold me down while he stuck needles in my mouth. Bastard.

Hangingover · 30/05/2020 14:49

Octopus and large empty rooms eg. Squash court. Drained swimming pools.

NietzschePeachPearPlum · 30/05/2020 15:15

Pylons. They’re horrific.

And chimpanzees, hippos and wildebeest in equal measure. Can’t bear the thought of any of those, they all make my skin crawl.

I mean, a wildebeest is so top and front heavy it looks like it should topple over. And so ugly. And what the fuck even is it? Is it a cow? A deer? Don’t tell me, I don’t want to know.

BearSoFair · 30/05/2020 15:55

Crabs. Armour plated spiders in my mind even though I know how irrational that is!

All insect legs. It's the segments. A few years ago I opened the front door and there was a beetle stuck on it's back, legs flailing, I cried Blush, ran back out, walked 10 minutes to my friend's house and begged her to come and get rid of it Blush Blush She did to be fair!

toomanyplants · 30/05/2020 16:08

Tomato ketchup, cold baked beans, and gaps on the floor of a bridge or open plan stairs 🤷🏻‍♀️

SimplySteveRedux · 30/05/2020 16:08

Anything being put in, or near, my mouth by another person. Instant massive panic attack.p

Nitpickpicnic · 30/05/2020 16:17

Anyone touching my bellybutton.

I had to tell each boyfriend early on to give it a big swerve. It makes me feel very icky, and certainly is a mood killer. I get nauseous and sweaty.

My sister has an extreme version- she once chose a far more complicated/intrusive medical procedure because the simple keyhole version meant a belly button entry. Even knowing she’d be fully sedated was no help.

Realised recently our mum has the bellybutton aversion too. But only mildly. All of us have real problems cleaning our navels, and dealing with newborns with stumpy ones!

peoplearepeople · 30/05/2020 16:23

Fish that are not in water, be it dead or alive. I can't go near that section in the supermarket. Grin
Swimming with small fish. Fine with large whales/sharks/dolphins or stingrays etc though.
Deep dark open water.
Also agree with the bottom of ships.
I'm actually a really good swimmer, and I know the above fears are all connected to an experience I had when younger. None of them affect my day to day life too badly though so I guess I'm lucky.

SimonJT · 30/05/2020 16:25

Finger/toe nails, if they’re long enough to have any white part of the nail showing it makes me physically ill.

I cut my boyfriends nails nearly everyday, if they got long enough to show any of the white of his nail I genuinely wouldn’t be able to let him touch me for a couple of weeks.

No idea why, no conscious memory of anyone in my childhood having long nails or making a fuss about nails.

bruisedbutnotbeaten · 30/05/2020 17:39

ThepurpleMoose. Mine is buttons too. Dirty things. I believe Steve Jobs had the same phobia, which is how the iPhone came about.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 30/05/2020 18:01

Octopuses, they're just not right. Nothing that big should be able to get through something that small. They are vile, disgusting and I cannot look at them.

Humanoid marionette puppets and hand puppets. Mr Punch style ones are the absolute worst.

A choice of puppets or octopuses? I think I'd rather eat my own sick.

newyearnoeu · 30/05/2020 18:38

flowers and plants. The bigger they are, the worse it is. I can just about handle, for example, a daisy or buttercup now (although wouldn't out of choice) but sunflowers....no fucking way. I'd walk a good distance around to avoid them!

Although everyone I tell it to disagrees, I maintain it's not that weird a phobia - there have been a good number of films/tv shows based on plants eating people!!!

HappyDinosaur · 30/05/2020 18:57

I didn't realize that so many people shared my boat fear, I find their underneaths particularly awful. I'm also scared of dark rooms behind me, I have to leave a room in a strange way if I've turned out the light.

Flippyflo · 30/05/2020 19:03

Seeds/things all clumped together-

E.g cutting open a pepper and seeing the seeds!! Just makes me vooooommmmmmm

mightbealittlebitmad · 30/05/2020 19:12

Certain kinds of hole clusters, mainly anything resembling a lotus pod. I made the mistake of googling trypophobia because I didn't why holes freaked people out. All was fine until I came across the horrid lotus pod. There is a toad called the Suriname or something along those lines which keeps its eggs on its back in the holes. I heard it was worse than the lotus pod so I'm definitely not googling that one.

I hate spiders too but they don't bother me in the same kind of way. I can look at a spider and feel a bit on edge but no way in the same way at holes. Don't like heights either, I'm ok with rollercoasters because I'm strapped in and I go on them for the thrill but I will not go near the edge of something even if it has barriers. I'm worse since having kids because I'm absolutely paranoid that somehow they will fall off the edge of something.

Zoflorabore · 30/05/2020 19:50

I must be the only one then who likes holes Grin I love the lotus ones and the pasta ones. Zoflo runs and hides......
