Point Horror

Just ordered some from ebay. I absolutely loved them when I was a teenager. I was telling my teen boys about them, they googled the titles a laughed at me...little shits.

I'm going to burst into their rooms and make them listen to an excerpt from Trick or Treat at 3am, then we'll see who's scared.

They used to scare me shitless.
Did anyone else used to love them?

I enjoyed Point Horror but loved Point Crime. Then graduated to Agatha Christie and mostly read crime and thriller now.

I lived the Nightmare Hall ones.

HouseOfSticks · 30/05/2020 08:36

There is also a podcast called Teen Creeps where they talk about these books. That’s quite funny.

UpToonGirl · 30/05/2020 09:09

Does anyone remember the (american) college point horror.. cant quite remember what it was called. All by the same author.

MarieQueenofScots · 30/05/2020 09:14

@UpToonGirl

Nightmare Hall by Diane Hoh!

ExhaustedGrinch · 30/05/2020 09:17

I remember as a young teen being very secretive about reading Forever by Judy Blume, it felt very naughty to be reading it at the time.

Loved the Point Horror books and Goosebumps, like others I used to rush to the shops with my pocket money to buy them.

Also used to love the Sweet Valley High books and the Making Out Series too (anyone remember Making Out?).

UpToonGirl · 30/05/2020 10:04

@MarieQueenofScots yes, that was it!

Just looking through some on ebay, I loved The Yearbook, Dream Date and The Watcher.

There was Point Horror Unleashed - I read one about wooden puppets in the woods and it was actually really scary! I don't think I ever saw them in the library much.

Might have been The Carver? Ive almost got a full set!

If I was ever on Mastermind Point Horror would be my specialist subject Grin

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 30/05/2020 10:08

I've just read one on Kindle Unlimited (Drivers Dead). I'm sure they used to be longer! Only took about an hour.

UpToonGirl · 30/05/2020 10:25

Yes, The Carver sounds right. I can't remember anything other than it was really scary!

mammmamia · 30/05/2020 18:37

@SatsumaZoom I LOVED those books!
Which one was the one about the girl who had a twin who could levitate?

mammmamia · 30/05/2020 18:42

@UpToonGirl thanks for recommending the adult Pike book. Going to order! Loved him so much.

EmbarrassedUser · 30/05/2020 18:45

OMG, I used to love these! There was a build up that I used to have to really psych myself up to read 😂 Some of them I was really scared of. Makes me all misty eyed, think I might have to order some too plus Sweet Valley High 😂

mammmamia · 30/05/2020 18:46

@IAmReportingYouForBBQing I still remember the story of Die Softly so well.
Also there was another one by christopher Pike I can’t get out of my head. It was Road to Nowhere. A couple are trying to run away and they keep having to relive the same thing over and over again.
I don’t think I ever finished it and really want to know how it ended.

I never read any Point Crime so might have to order.

UpToonGirl · 30/05/2020 18:55

@mammmamia let me know what you think of it!

What age do you all think PH is suitable for, can't remember when I started reading it. DS 8 is too young for now but hopefully he will enjoy them in a few years, although possibly they are aimed more at girls.

SatsumaZoom · 30/05/2020 19:02

mammmamia I think that was Stranger with my Face, where her twin used Astral Projection to travel around the place! Wow so many memories ❤️

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 30/05/2020 20:08

I loved them!! Some were...very very odd. Others...horrible. The beach hut one where one girl was left to drown and another eaten by sharks! The Dead Girlfriend and cat in the pot!
The baby sitter ones..probably didnt need as many but started well.

Loved Chris Pike as well. Remember me! Definitely my fav. We'll ignore the sequels to that one though. That got odd

hlc123 · 30/05/2020 20:51

ExhaustedGrinch I remember the Making Out Series, so many books but so good!

I loved Point Horror especially Ritchie Tankersley Cusick books and Christopher Pike. My favourite was Chain Letter

kyles101 · 30/05/2020 22:15

Read a swat valley within the last few years - there's a "where are they now" type one - cringe!! (But secretly loved it!)

Read a couple of point crime but then they led me onto the alphabet crime books - a is for alibi, b is for... something. It was based around a female private investigator based in America. Looking back I'm sure I was far too young to be reading them when I did - maybe 12/13? Does anyone remember them?

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 30/05/2020 22:33

Oh Sweet Valley!! Those perfect twins and their many many many many many dramas.

kyles101 · 30/05/2020 22:53

sweet valley spoiler alert

I think there was wife swapping in the where are they now version 😳

DS (10) absolutely couldn't cope - he's rubbish with any films that involve an element of emotional angst. And gave up on Harry Potter after book 3 because "it was getting a bit scary".

But that said, he's fine with King Kong, Godzilla etc. I just can't remember how the books are written. I don't think you get too attached to the characters, in which case the horror element might be amusing to him. Probably need to break lockdown and wrestle custody of our joint collection back from DSis, then I can check before passing them on (which would obviously be a great hardship!).

kyles101 · 31/05/2020 00:22

I'm such a book nerd I can't believe I don't know where my PHs are 😬 brings me out in a cold sweat!!

Quirrelsotherface · 31/05/2020 04:56

I remember one being based at a ski chalet or something? I read all of the RL Stine ones and I always remember feeling disconcerted at the end of each one as I was hoping for a cosy ending but they were mostly terrifying to the end Grin
Also must have read all of the Babysitters Club and Sweet Valley Twins plus all the Judy Blume. Wish I'd have kept more!

Some of the Christopher Pike books are available to read free here if anyone fancies a trip down memory lane..
