Swindon where to live?

Hi, I'm just looking to move near to Gloucester for work and there seems to be a lot of houses in swindon that are really nice but cheap for the size, one in particular is in Sparcells.. I know nothing about Swindon other than to avoid penhill and was just wondering if there are any other areas to avoid or any that are particularly nice? Thanks!

Isn't Swindon over thirty miles from Gloucester? Confused
There must be places closer than that, surely.

My partner will be working fairly close to Swindon and I'll be in glouster so that's why we're looking in Swindon 😊

Old Town is lovely. Most of Swindon itself is best avoided. Can you consider the villages around it?

Please consider the traffic in Swindon is horrendous( Magic roundabout, anyone?)
I'd have thought somewhere like Kemble or towards Cirencester would be worth looking into
I live in Wiltshire, by the way but not Swindon

My brother used to live in Cheltenham and work in Swindon, he said the A417 in commuting driving hours is horrendous. He got another job

What's your budget / what type of house are you looking for ?
Sparcells is an estate that was build in 1990s.
Most of West Swindon went up in 80s/90s.
Liden/ Eldene/ Covingham 70s
Terrace older style houses Rodbourne, most of Gorse Hill, old town.
Lots of 1930s/1940s bay windowed properties about - Old Walcot is good for those.

You’d be mad to commute on the 417 it’s crazy at all times
Swindon has loads of good parts

Avoid anywhere beginning with P apart from Peatmoor

Old town is lovely As is parts of old Walcot ( not Walcot) or Lawn
Old Cheney Manor is small and quiet with its own fishing lake and arboretum
Sparcells and peatmoor are 90s build with new houses going up around them

There are some lovely towns and villages halfway between Swindon and Gloucester.
Chippenham, Malmesbury, Cirencester, Cheltenham are all nicer than Swindon although more expensive for that reason.

We are thinking of Swindon too, does anyone know what the northern edge is like? I’d also like to know why Swindon got such a bad reputation? It can’t just be the traffic as Bristol traffic just as bad.
House prices are seriously cheap for a town with a direct train line to London. The countryside is beautiful aswell.

Town centre is dire, really dire. It’s also rather lacking in culture and very much a commuter sprawl. It does have it’s charms, but they are not obvious.

Hi op have you decided on Swindon or one of the surrounding villages ?
