Car crash Today interview

Anyone just listened to the interview with the minister on the Today program just now?

Tbh, I'd become a bit bored with the whole DC debacle and thought it would probably just go away. But that interview was extraordinary. Made it obvious how indefensible the government's position was. And yet, here was the government defending DC. Extraordinary.

I heard it but thought Mishal was the awful one and I am a fan of hers usually. She went on and on and really laboured the silly points. No idea who this politian was but unless he was also in the car how could he know the answers to the silly questions. We need to know more about lockdown not whether DC went for an hours exercise or to test his eyes at a local beauty spot. Honestly, this stuff is so ridiculous now.
So many other important things in the world - Hong Kong for example.
If I wake up tomorrow and Today is still leading on this story, I will have to switch over to 5 Live!

Also, they should mention that he was driving up there to get help for his young son who at 4 cannot make his own dinner or put himself to bed and they did not stay in his family house - but a separate house.

LaureBerthaud · 27/05/2020 08:50

I'm bored with it too. DC is going nowhere - he knows where the bodies are buried and BJ couldn't function without him.

sashagabadon · 27/05/2020 08:52

sorry one more thing - she also thought it was a killer question as to why downing street didn't send up a driver and car to collect him adn drive him back to London.
Can you just imagine the fuss if this had happened - half the MP's would have lost their minds with the expense of it all - one rule for him, why can't we all have tax payer funded chaffeurs , what about the risk to the chaffeur etc etc - such a nonsense question presented by Mishal as the obvious solution - the media would have dined out on that as a "solution" for a fortnight!

Glowcat · 27/05/2020 09:00

I’m sorry if the person who effectively runs the country deciding that lockdown rules don’t apply to him because he’s special isn’t interesting enough for you sashagabadon. It’s not like hundreds of thousands of people faced issues of caring for children or elderly parents but managed not to completely ignore the rules because they wanted to do the right thing and not risk spreading the virus.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 27/05/2020 09:10

I wouldn’t mind the endless coverage if it was actually moving the discussion on and asking reasonable questions, but it’s either people suggesting things that a moment’s thought would tell you would bring as many problems as it solved or even put more people at risk, or else it’s the repeated asking of questions DC has already answered. You might not believe his answers, but asking them over and over again isn’t going to elicit any new information.

Amusing memes on Facebook about Barnard Castle or further actual investigation is fine, but the wall to wall repetition is starting to feel more like a media agenda than actual journalism.

sashagabadon · 27/05/2020 09:28

exactly countess! that is my point - asking the same questions of random politicians who weren't there and don;t know over and over and over again. Such a waste of an interview when we need to know more about lock down measures etc. It was about 10 mins of absolute nonsense and gave us listeners nothing at all. It was infuriating as a listener as Mishal's questions got more and more desperate.
abnd her solutions were rubbish too - getting a driver to bring DC and wife back to London even if it was considered at the time , would have been dismissed as it causes even more problems than it solves and would have been even more criticised - rightly if they had done that.
Honestly I am so sick of this leading every news bulletin - it is an important story BUT not that important to lead every news item for 4 days.
If it goes on tomorrow too , I will be absolutely sure that BBC news have collectively lost their minds and now have a clear agenda.

We need to know about what is happening next in this pandemic - not something that happened at the end of March that actually has made no material difference to 99.9% of anyone in the grand scheme of things.
I am more interested in local lockdowns, how track and trace is coming on, what is happening with PPE

sashagabadon · 27/05/2020 09:29

but I have enjoyed the memes as much as the next person

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 27/05/2020 09:30

Yy, I want to know about track and trace and when can people see family.

ArfArfBarf · 27/05/2020 09:36

People in positions of power lie obviously and outrageously and we’re supposed to just forget about it and move on because it’s boring?

When we know that they are willing to lie to our faces what is the point in hearing what they have to say about PPE, track and trace, local lockdowns. Chances are it’ll be a load of made up bollocks.

Zero-integrity government.

No point asking anyone from the government to answer any of those questions if you actually want an answer. They’ll just lie and then go back and say they never said it.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 27/05/2020 09:43

You move onto the PPE questions and check out their answers to those too, doing actual investigative work like journalists are supposed to.
Otherwise they can do whatever else they like under the radar while everyone is fixated on Dominic driving to Durham.

sashagabadon · 27/05/2020 10:00

bet any money we are going to get at least a day of - has anyone else been fined by the police in the exact circumstances of DC?- when I doubt anyone has or it would be all over media by now with countless interviews with said person
The exact same people demanding this is investigated when in other circumstances they would be equally furious that the politicians were interfering in police processes when the police should be independant of politicians.
I listen to Today every morning and I usually enjoy it and learn alot from it - once John H left anyway as he was such an aggressive interviewer. Mishal is much better and I like her style usually but this DC stuff has genuinely sent the media mad and I can only conclude this has become a Brexit / remain battle by proxy and it is very infuriating .

Noextremes2017 · 27/05/2020 10:13

Yeah - probably time to leave it behind. Cummings is going nowhere - he has zero integrity. Johnson wouldn't push him - Cummings seems to have some kind of a hold over Johnson and he is a weak character anyway.

Still it has been a laugh listening to all the made up justifications.

Neolara · 27/05/2020 10:21

I think the real story is not about what DC did, but about the government's desperation to protect him. The question is why, and the only answer I can come up with is that he is effectivelyrunning the country. Which might be ok if he had been elected...
