Amazon

I’ve only just started shopping online (very late to the party!). I was on Amazon tonight and put a pair of men’s shoes and a telescopic hedge cutter into my basket.

It then said it cannot deliver the cutter to my address and I could send it to another address or cancel it.

I cancelled both items but I can’t understand why I got this message. Can anyone enlighten me?

I stay in a small village.

I can only guess that the cutter is an age restricted item requiring verification on delivery and for some reason that's a problem... but why it would be a problem for your home address I don't know.

There are two things I can think of

  1. Are you in an area with generally restricted or extra charges for delivery - maybe off the mainland or some other issue that makes delivery challenging
  1. Maybe the courier for that item isn't currently working in your area because of CV. Eg all the Hermes deliveries to a specific area may be cancelled because all their drivers in that area are shielding or isolating.

It will be because they can't get it to you.

Argos are a nightmare just now for deliveries near me (NE Scotland) - basically if it wasn't already in the warehouses up here we can't have it.

Does it offer a pickup location option? If so, is there one you could possibly get to?

PineconeOfDoom · 27/05/2020 00:10

Do you live somewhere a bit out of the way? The hedge cutter is probably reasonably big once packaged up, so needs a specific carrier for your area. Who may not be working atm. You can’t use a locker and most pick-up locations for large stuff either.

PineconeOfDoom · 27/05/2020 00:11

I couldn’t get a rolling pin because it was too big for pick-up, so you’ve no hope with a hedge trimmer Grin

Cheeeeislifenow · 27/05/2020 00:13

I'm in Ireland, I regularly cannot order things from Amazon.

Mollypolly2610 · 27/05/2020 18:29

I don’t understand why it said I can order to another address though.

Was the hedge trimmer being sold/fulfilled by Amazon itself or was it a marketplace seller?

Some marketplace sellers use couriers with limited delivery areas to save money, so often there are areas that aren’t covered. So rather than lose the sale, they ask you if you have another address (maybe friend/relative in nearest large town) who you could pick it up from.

We get it a lot in our part of rural Scotland- no delivery, extra charges or longer timeframe. I tend to stick to Amazon sold/fulfilled as it’s more reliable (and easier to get refunds etc if anything goes awry).

Mollypolly2610 · 27/05/2020 20:18

Thanks. I’m in rural Scotland too so that may be the reason.

I don’t understand why it said I can order to another address though.

Because not all warehouses have all stock and stock isn't moving from warehouse to warehouse. Or because the courier can get to some addresses but not all.

nasalspray · 27/05/2020 20:38

Oh. Rural Scotland. That's definitely it.

Mollypolly2610 · 27/05/2020 22:48

Thanks all!
