Extras at a wedding - what do you actually enjoy?

Guests will be fed and watered. Not wanting to go mad with £££ that won't make a jot of difference.

We've booked a really good wedding DJ. Beer on tap.

Glitter bar? Photo booth??

I think it sounds fantastic. Make sure there's something for the wine drinkers, though, and lots of soft drinks.

WendyHoused · 26/05/2020 16:55

I went to a wedding with a dance coach as part of the entertainment. He taught us to do the Charleston. It was brilliant.

There was ample seating for those who wanted into sit it out, but it really was the most amazing experience.

OohThatCat · 26/05/2020 16:56

Somewhere sheltered, both from harsh sun or rain. I've been at a few heatwave weddings where there's been no respite from the sun - guests have had to huddle under trees and it was awful.

We had a magician at ours, he was ace. Blended in with guests, did amazing tricks, everyone loved him. I work in the wedding industry and am at at least 30 weddings a year, there's a lot of wedding guff we cut out of ours, but I was adamant on a magician!

Patio heaters? Its quite an open venue

Sodamncold · 26/05/2020 16:57

The fact you even ask the a glitter bar makes me think that perhaps you and your friends would enjoy?

OohThatCat · 26/05/2020 16:58

If you do have a glitter bar, please go for an eco glitter one!

Sodamncold · 26/05/2020 17:01

Awesome food
Free bar until 11pm and then 50% off
Small crowd of friends and family.
Comfortable temperature
No young children
No long photography session (negating need for things like a.... magician!)
A wedding list but very much - we have put this together but no pressure and the only thing we really want is you at our wedding... kind of approach

Very funny speeches (but can’t really ensure that!)

All the rest - meaningless.

mudpiemaker · 26/05/2020 17:01

Like everyone else says, lots of seating, shelter from weather, whether too hot or too cold or raining, plenty of food.

If there is a quieter place to sit out from the noise all the better. I have been pregnant at weddings, obviously not at the time they are booked but later so it isn't just older people who need a seat.

One of the worst weddings I went to took place in a Michelin star venue, not enough seating, a couple of canapes to last us hours and finally, finally the main 3 course meal. But everyone was still hungry afterwards. It looked pretty, tasted really good but there wasn't enough on the plates. There was nowhere to get food nearby, everyone had been drinking so we couldn't drive anywhere and we ended up raiding our boot for the snacks we had stashed for our journey there and back. We were not alone in doing this.

Yours sounds like a good amount of food though. Mmm cheese. Grin make sure you have a good selection of soft drinks, cater for children too.

I would hate a glitter bar, sorry, and I wouldn't want anyone glittered people near me and whatever I had chosen to wear that day. Glitter bars are surely for festivals not weddings. I love glitter but it is an arse to get out of clothes.

lilgreen · 26/05/2020 17:02

None. If you get the food, drinks and music right it’s all you need. I went to a wedding with food that took ages to come out, slow bar and a poor band but they had all these extras. They’re not needed if everything else is good.

Haggisfish · 26/05/2020 17:03

I like a photo booth have to say!

Fluffycloudland77 · 26/05/2020 17:04

From previous wedding in a barn with a hog roast NO FLOUR ON THE BAPS.

I cannot stress the point enough. I did not put my nice frock on to get covered in flour.

Also, the weather meant no outside bbq so they “did it inside” aka heated up slow cooked pork shoulder and put it into floury baps. It was cheap euro pork too.

Dh is now banned from accepting wedding invitations at work unless he’s going alone.

Lockdownlooks · 26/05/2020 17:04

Seating, soft drinks. If your food goes for a couple of hours 4-6 is there a comfortable place until 8.30? What were you planning for that time?

cptartapp · 26/05/2020 17:06

It sounds really classy- except for the glitter bar that will get traipsed everywhere, especially if it's raining. Save your money there.

Flyinggeese · 26/05/2020 17:07

OP the glitter bar could be good if there are children attending and it's eco friendly (think you said it was) - why not?

EmbarrassedUser · 26/05/2020 17:09

Caricaturist! It was fab and people had a souvenir Of the day.

Helena79 · 26/05/2020 17:10

Both glitter bars and photo booths at a wedding sound tacky. So are having your faces printed on fake casino money and chocolate fountains and sweetie stands!!

I’ve been to so many weddings and the best ones I remember are those where there is ample food/drink/seating and good music (even an Spotify playlist and speakers is preferable versus a swing band no one can dance to!). Also a thoughtful time line, where there’s no lull, so 90 mins max for a drinks reception before dinner. And don’t disappear for hours on a photo shoot!

peperethecat · 26/05/2020 17:12

Who cares whether something sounds tacky? It's whether people have fun that counts.

UnfinishedSymphon · 26/05/2020 17:13

The sweet bars make me feel a bit ill, probably because of all those unwashed hands after toilet visits

EndothermicHands · 26/05/2020 17:14

I bloody love a sweetie bar fod when you get into taxi pissed at the end of the night and realise you have a handbag with pick &mix in!Grin

Hotcuppatea · 26/05/2020 17:14

A boogie and a bar. That's all people want.

EndothermicHands · 26/05/2020 17:14

Tiny tings a must have.

EndothermicHands · 26/05/2020 17:15

Ahem, tongs even.

Maverick66 · 26/05/2020 17:15

I like a simple wedding. Ie good venue, nice meal, good band/disco.
Tea /coffee/prossecco and scone/biscuit on arrival whilst awaiting bridal party having photos. Also enjoy photo booth it's usually good fun.

Dislikes would include long speeches with in jokes.
Choreographed first dance.
Bits and bobs wedding favours.
Overly elaborate floral displays.
Audience participation dances and magicians.

This might be just me though.

chocolicious · 26/05/2020 17:15

One wedding I went to had a DJ playing music and a steel band. The dance floor was busy when the steel band were playing. It got everyone up dancing.
Also,I love a ceilidh band at a wedding .

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/05/2020 17:20

One extra my dd had at her high summer wedding was v comfortable flip flops for the women - for later, when everyone’s feet start killing them.
They went down very well.
There were no itsy-bitsy favours on the tables, though.
