Noticed his name on Wikipedia's front page, and read the article.
What an amazing life he had. One of the few animals to escape when Berlin Zoo was bombed, he someone survived several years in wartime Berlin. In the aftermath of the war, the British gave him to the Soviets, and he lived out his life in Moscow Zoo.
The Americans arranged a mate for him in the 50s, but they never produced any young. He was very upset when she died.
Seems to have been a real character.
