Wanting to move North. But where?

We are thinking of moving north from Cambridgeshire. We have three primary aged kids (11,9 and 7). Our 9 and 7 year old have special needs. One is in a mainstream and so we’d need a decent inclusive mainstream primary then secondary and my youngest is at a specialist school.

We love being outdoors and would like to live somewhere family friendly with easy access to supermarkets. By North I mean Sheffield upwards 🙂 We’d ideally like access to the countryside. But not too rural as my eldest enjoys being bus. Budget is 500k. Husband works in finance so can work almost wherever.

For 500k you could get a really nice property in Lancashire, ribble valley is gorgeous, leyland/Chorley area has good links to Manchester for city stuff- gigs, air port, theatre etc. Very family friendly area.

I second Lancashire, the Ribble valley is often voted the best place to live in the UK (based on a variety of factors incl housing, schools, crime, amenities).
You could get a very nice house for 500k, for reference my parents live on the Fylde coast and their house is valued at £385k and is a big 4 bed detached.
You could also have a look around Leeds, amazing countryside just 20 mins from the city centre and some very nice suburban towns, you will pay more for property though.

There have been a few of these threads lately, do some searches and you'll find loads of advice to go through as well as what we all chip in with now.

For your budget and wish list, you'll have loads of choice in the Derbyshire peaks, nice parts of Lancashire and loads of Yorkshire. Also Northumberland. My advice would be research the general areas and choose your flavour of landscape eg coast, Dales, lakes, moors or peaks or bit of everything and then narrow down from there.

The North of England is as beautiful as anywhere in the world, in its own glorious ways.

As a Lancashire born and bred I will get lynched for suggesting somewhere in Yorkshire Grin

The Yorkshire wolds are lovely - try York or Beverly 🙂
