Did anyone actually put cheese in their coffee?

At peak pandemic Mumsnet, some posters were screeching that leaving the house to buy milk for hot drinks was NOT ESSENTIAL and to put cheese in your coffee / tea instead.

Or freeze ice cubes of milk in the fridge instead so you never run out of of milk because going to the supermarket is MURDERING people.

Did anybody actually do this or did we continue to be normal people and pop out to buy milk?

😂

Yes, my fridge is big enough, I suppose. But it’s just a normal fridge freezer in my 3 bed! Wink My freezer is chock a block, though. I wanted to have enough in there in case I got ill and had to stay put for a fortnight. I’m a single parent these days so there’s just me to do the shopping for us.

Muppetry76 · 25/05/2020 12:29

I put milk in ice cube trays. Only because my kids drink milk until it comes out of their ears if it's in the fridge and I wanted to guarantee my single first brew of the day.

Mostly because I'm a lazy cow who CBA queuing to get into the supermarket for 40 minutes just to spend 5 minutes buying milk.

Lordfrontpaw · 25/05/2020 12:29

We haven’t a huge fridge and managed ok for milk (one teen milk drinker and 2 adults) so far. Cravendale is a lifesaver.

BronwenFrideswide · 25/05/2020 12:35

There were some seriously deranged posts:

Pet food is not essential, just let them starve, people are dying,
don't go and tend to your horses, just let them starve or die of thirst, people are dying, if you go out you are a murderer.

It was as if a number of posters had collectively lost their minds and any grasp of logic or reasoning.

alfagirl73 · 25/05/2020 13:41

But you couldn't POSSIBLY be taking the pandemic seriously enough if you weren't literally sobbing and shaking on a daily basis about something, don't ya know!

ChocolatelyAsFuck · 25/05/2020 13:44

Butter coffee is surprisingly delicious.

Ditto Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk.

Don't forget the people causing other people to starve by making saltdough ornaments or playdough!

Somanysocks · 25/05/2020 14:33

The secret to not getting slated on here is to tell no-one what you've done during the last 3 months and pretend you haven't been out at all, for anything.

Although I realise there would be no threads on mumsnet. Grin

gingercat02 · 25/05/2020 14:35

I bought a litre of UHT milk at the time of bog roll panic just in case. Had to open it this week as we didn't have enough for breakfast in Wednesday. No cheese or other weird dairy in coffee here

iklboo · 25/05/2020 14:36

There was a poster on here who was “literally sobbing and shaking” at the thought of someone daring to go to a supermarket for a chocolate bar.

That poster was actually taking the piss out of the other histrionics.

ChristmasCarcass · 25/05/2020 14:42

princesstwinkle the cheese in coffee post definitely existed. It may not have been the Tricep Dip woman, the shielding one who doesn’t think anyone else should leave the house for any reason ever again either because it’s not fair on her, or the one who works in a supermarket who thinks people buying non-essentials like milk and bread are “literal murderers”, who IIRC were the three who spammed up most covid threads around that time. But I definitely remember reading it.

KatherineJaneway · 25/05/2020 14:43

Nope

BirdieFriendReturns · 25/05/2020 14:54

iklboo - the person who was “sobbing and shaking” is a supermarket worker who is at home shielding. I remember the thread very well because we discussed it on another forum.

The OP and the person sobbing and shaking then tried to outdo each other. Supermarket worker by saying the OP was literally killing people and the anxiety was making them sob and shake. Then the OP was crying with anxiety and said supermarket poster had made her very upset.

This went on for several pages until the thread was deleted. The shielding supermarket poster is still around being a dementor.

Oh I was also told that I shouldn’t go out to buy tampons, I should practice free bleeding which is where you let your menstrual blood run down your legs.

And yes, that’s a thing.

@BirdieFriendReturns - ah, I see. There was a thread where the sobbing & shaking poster was taking the piss. Probably after reading that one Grin

Soubriquet · 25/05/2020 15:03

Yeah it was shocking at the hysteria on here

Amusing but shocking

And that cow advert....why would they want to advertise to the general public about cow embryos? Grin

Soubriquet · 25/05/2020 15:06

I’m a supermarket worker

The only problem I have, is some people think wearing face masks protects them from everything and goes into everyone’s space.

I get into trouble if I break the 2m rule. So there’s me backing away, whilst someone in a face mask keeps coming closer

Twospaniels · 25/05/2020 15:12

Daughter’s FB friend who would be early twenties, was ranting at the beginning of lockdown about how the government can’t keep everyone in and it’s against her yooman rights, etc, one reply told her to f**k the government and go out if she wanted to, but she replied “I can’t hun, I have an underlying health condition”. You couldn’t make it up!
Daughter keeps her of Fb for the entertainment value 😂

Judiwench · 25/05/2020 15:15

Oooh freezing milk cubes is a great idea. I'm always running out and hate UHT.

I am pro lockdown but was v Hmm at the milk is murder threads.

Kokeshi123 · 25/05/2020 15:24

Oh God, I remember those people. Good times.

I am in East Asia and we were already about six weeks into the pandemic by the time the drama hit in the UK, so I and the people around me had already had plenty time to adjust to the situation.

I remember trying to gently explain to people stuff along the lines of, "This is not going to be over in a couple of weeks. There will be some level of restrictions for months. Everyone will have more stamina to keep going for longer, if people don't actually go out of their way to make their own and other people's lives more miserable through pettiness, judgment, hysteria and puritanical joylessness." It didn't go down too well. Too many poster busy shouting at each other, making up rules about how people shouldn't be enjoying the garden, shouldn't be doing DIY, shouldn't be drinking alcohol, shouldn't be going for a walk. Other people thought the same of me but it was difficult to avoid being abashed when there was so much seething rage and judgment going on.

Thankfully, things have quietened down a bit now and the fun sponges have mostly shut up.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 25/05/2020 15:28

I've been donating milk powder, flour and cans I'll never use (thanks DH) to the local foodbank.

I remember the absolute hysteria at the start but didn't like to say that I managed to get an online slot every 7 days in case I got accused of murdering the elderly. (TBF I am shielding and just a little bit old).

IncrediblySadToo · 25/05/2020 15:37

I remember the thread very well because we discussed it on another forum

Now there's a surprise

Trevsadick · 25/05/2020 15:40

I’m only going to the supermarket once a week to minimise risk. Can’t you just buy enough milk for a week? The use by dates are long enough. And I have bought Easter eggs etc, but on my weekly shop.

Firstly...no. especially large families that don't have loads of storage space in teb fridge. Or people that don't drive.

I can, early on I was shopping very infrequently. Because I am lucky enough to drive & have space.

Secondly, there's no need for anyone to have milk powder, uht milk. You were allowed to go to the shop.

Some posters, including the one that made the comment about cheese/ coffee and calcium and the sobbing and shaking posters, all felt that going to you local shop made you a killer.

There was never any need or requirement for people to not nip to a shop in between bigger shops. Or go without milk.

MeAgain2020 · 25/05/2020 16:02
Grin I love MN!!! Just love reading through these. Remembering the whole drama about what is and what isn't essential!!! 😂 And good to see there are normal people on here with common sense! We will all be alright in the end....
