Did anyone actually put cheese in their coffee?

At peak pandemic Mumsnet, some posters were screeching that leaving the house to buy milk for hot drinks was NOT ESSENTIAL and to put cheese in your coffee / tea instead.

Or freeze ice cubes of milk in the fridge instead so you never run out of of milk because going to the supermarket is MURDERING people.

Did anybody actually do this or did we continue to be normal people and pop out to buy milk?

😂

In the Far East, can't remember now which country, they used to put goats cheese in tea.Looked and tasted disgusting.Thick greasy film of melted effin' stinky goats cheese on the top.Rank.

I think that if they were that hysterical in the first place they're unlikely to have changed their stance by now. I suggested an early evening walk to a friend who recoiled at the very suggestion, o do wonder if she'll ever leave the house again. It's very sad, she's no underlying health problems, she hasn't left her house in over two months. She's piled on the weight, is depressed and stopped exercising at home because she can't see the point. She's very pale and isn't sleeping. And she thinks I'm weird for going out every day for a long walk or jog.

No! 🤣 someone on a local fb group was frothing about elderly people apparently buying all the baby formula to use in their tea and coffee. I can’t imagine many people would be doing this because formula is not only massively expensive but really doesn’t taste nice, cannot imagine putting it in my coffee!

GreekOddess · 25/05/2020 11:51

Has anyone got a link to the hysterical thread?

Comingoutontop123 · 25/05/2020 11:52

I did so enjoy the posters saying it was perfectly acceptable to lock DH out of the house and contemplate divorce because he went to the shop for a non-essential 😂

36degrees · 25/05/2020 11:52

We froze some milk in 500ml portions because our local cafe gave us two 4 litre containers when they closed the day before lockdown, and we had a pack of freezer bags left over from clearing my ILs' house 2 years ago.
It wasn't really planned but it did keep us going every now and again between weekly supermarket runs, we have a small fridge that can't comfortably hold a week's worth of what we need for every meal and drink. And it felt good to know that if one of us became ill or we needed to quarantine, we could at least have a cuppa now and again. No milk hoarding regret here.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 25/05/2020 11:53

No, but wtf do I do with a bag of powdered milk that I am never going to use? I only have one small bag, bought when the milk was being stripped from the shelves. I didn't end up needing it. I could donate it - any other thoughts?

BirdieFriendReturns · 25/05/2020 11:57

I was also told that I was selfish going to the shop to buy pads and tampons and painkillers and should cut up an old bed sheet instead.

Of course I still went to Sainsbury’s!

Use it when you make bread?

WitchyMoo · 25/05/2020 11:57

This thread is hilarious 😂.
I like the ' incandescent with rage' that people got through Easter egg buying .
I didn't buy any as I'm a tight bastard anyway so saw lockdown as an excuse not to buy any
I've been to the co -op for vodka and wine lately and not even trying to disguise it with essential purchases as well
I'd rather go without tea and coffee than stick cheese in it as an alternative to milk . That's vile .

MillicentMartha · 25/05/2020 11:58

To be fair, I’m only going to the supermarket once a week to minimise risk. Can’t you just buy enough milk for a week? The use by dates are long enough. And I have bought Easter eggs etc, but on my weekly shop.

trilbydoll · 25/05/2020 12:00

I still can't get plain flour on my online shops and I can't face the queue in person. We had very fluffy pancakes for breakfast last week with SR flour rather than plain. Maybe cheese would have improved them?!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 25/05/2020 12:02

Use it when you make bread

Maybe. But at the moment I don't have any yeast and the bread I make does not have much milk in it.

FlamingoAndJohn · 25/05/2020 12:02

I remember before lockdown people were saying that you wouldn’t be allowed to go out for a run because the virus might be on your shoes or someone might stop you to ask the time.

I use oat milk so we haven’t run out at all here.

As an aside I’ve had the most strange advert in this thread.

nasalspray · 25/05/2020 12:05

I got so much out of Mumsnet in the easily stages of this pandemic.

The best for me was the poster who was absolutely seething that she could only buy 3 tins of tomatoes. She had a large family and 3 tins just wasn't enough to make a particular meal. I tried explaining that they could simply have a different meal but it fell on deaf ears. Tesco were the devil because she could not get enough tomatoes Grin

nasalspray · 25/05/2020 12:05

*early stages

TreacherousPissFlap · 25/05/2020 12:06

I rather miss the hysteria in some ways Grin

Hobnobswantshernameback · 25/05/2020 12:07

The sobbing and shaking poster is still dementoring
And the "buy enough for a week" camp
Can people not stretch their tiny imaginations enough to think some people have very little storage space and fridges
Not everyone lives in a five bed detached with kitchens you can host supper parties for twenty in
Fuck sake

Lordfrontpaw · 25/05/2020 12:07

I’m out of ideas - that’s all I’d ever use dried milk for! I only have at home out of habit because mum never used fresh milk in her tea as she couldn’t stand the taste.

Shinyletsbebadguys · 25/05/2020 12:09

Blimey I missed that one (I think anyway unless it was the Easter egg thread and then I just missed the post) , I mean I'm keto and drink bullet proof coffee which most people think is insane, I also am in a deeply loving relationship with cheese , but there is a sodding limit !

Some people had a lot of fun letting their inner bosom hoiker go nucking futs.

I quite liked the Easter egg thread, made me feel sane which is quite the leap.

My DC accidentally ended with three lots because everyone thi6ugh noone else would be able to get them....they were in a chocolate stupor for a week.Grin

BirdieFriendReturns · 25/05/2020 12:10

I’ve been out 3 times this week for a takeaway coffee.

YangShanPo · 25/05/2020 12:13

I have put butter in my coffee when doing keto, that's quite nice you have to blend it in the blender though and it has about 400 calories.

Lordfrontpaw · 25/05/2020 12:14

Why butter and not milk/cream?

YangShanPo · 25/05/2020 12:16

Butter is even lower in carbs and higher in fat so best for keto

SockYarn · 25/05/2020 12:18

No. Most sane and rational people just went out and bought milk. And Easter eggs. And all the other stuff that people who lived through most of April and May on cans of chickpeas were saying would kill thousands if you went out to buy.
