What have I done to my foot?

2 weeks ago my foot started to hurt and hadnt got any better . Rest, ice, compression and elevation all help. It only really hurts when I walk on it and feels better in shoes rather than not in shoes. It's the tendon running from my second toe that hurts. It doesnt hurt at all to bend my toes. I did phone my GP but they reckon it's a sprain? It's so painful. Ibuprofen helps! Gutted because I had started doing couch to 5k, my DH thinks maybe I hurt it running but I'd only done week 1.

Plantar fasciitis? It can take a long time to improve x

I dont think its that as think that's normally under your foot and this is on top of my foot.

It sounds a bit like a foot injury I had , fine when I got on the plane ,very painful foot when I got off. I didn't to to the doctor but about 3 weeks later we were staying at a hotel and I went to the loo in the middle of the night and stepped awkwardly n on my trainer. In the morning the pain had gone. The best guess I had was that I'd dislocated a bond and when I stood on the trainer it popped back in.

Right. I will try standing on lots of things !!

Get DH to give you a good foot massage!

Sounds like it could be a Morton’s Neuroma, it’s a swelling on a nerve between your toes.

Take ibuprofen for it, and make sure you’re wearing shoes that allow your toes to spread and are supportive. If it doesn’t get better see your dr for naproxen, and possibly a referral.

Stress fracture? I had one earlier in the year and it was agony, took a while to heal!

TheGriffle · 25/05/2020 08:06

I think I tore a tendon in my foot and had pain like you describe, across the top of my foot.

I was kneeling down, pushed myself up with my toes as you do and it hurt a little, walked around a bit and something popped in my foot and my foot went from under me. Really really bad pain could barely bare weight on it. Went to minor injuries I was in so much pain and they took one look and said ‘oh you’ve just pulled something. It was so painful and took months to heal.

Could it be metatarsal related? There is a condition called metatarsalgia which is basically inflammation and pain in the area, (non specific ) and it is very painful. When I had it it would wake me in the night. It's common in runners which is why I suggest it could be that due to starting your c25K. What trainers are you running in? Are they big enough - crushed toes cause no end of foot pain and problems

OuzoWoozo · 25/05/2020 08:24

Is it shooting / sharp pain? Mortons Neuroma possibly, or capsicillus?

Namechange3007 · 25/05/2020 10:21

Yes it does sound like that. I had proper running shoes but hadnt run for a while. Is it worth me going to the GP? Or minor injuries? Obviously been trying to avoid it. Its agony when I first get up even though it's been resting all night. Could be arthritis? Its really getting me down, so fed up.

Does it feel like you're walking on a stone?

Does standing on tip toe hurt?

Namechange3007 · 25/05/2020 10:27

No to both those questions

Namechange3007 · 25/05/2020 10:27

Standing on tip toes actually made the pain go off slightly afterwards.

@Namechange3007 if it is metatarsalgia they can't do anything but it might be worth checking that you don't have something broken or snapped in there. Do you get a strange cold feeling in there, like a painful numbness? That's the only way I can describe it. That's the first sign that mine is flaring up, and it comes from my joint of my big toe where I have a rather impressive bunion. There are exercises you can do to relieve it and prevent it, eg rolling a tennis ball under your foot and arch strengthening exercises but I'd wait until the immediate inflammation has died down a bit (RICE advice)

Your running shoes should be at least half and possibly 1 whole size bigger than your normal size and maybe even more if you have wide feet or are prone to swelling.

Namechange3007 · 25/05/2020 11:15

No not got a cold numb feeling. Just a shooting pain up the tendon of my toe. Its agony today. I only did week 1 of couch to 5k and I've run more than that before. Week 1 is mainly walking!

Not sure if I already said but the pain came on very gradually.

Hi @Namechange3007 I’ve also recent gone back into physical activity and have an awful pain on top of my foot and my ankle too! How did this get better?
I don’t wanna not be active again!!
