What are the chances of being able to buy a freezer on a bank holiday weekend in the middle of a pandemic?

Our freezer has decided to fail this weekend, there's a red light on and although things are still frozen it's not as cold as it should be. It's 10+ years old and only a cheap beko anyway so unlikely to be economical to repair.

I've found a couple of places online that could deliver midweek, although they only seem to have quite expensive models in stock.
Currys & Argos have nothing available/in stock. Is there anywhere else that might be worth trying that's open for click and collect right now?

Do you have a local Facebook Covid support group? You could ask in there if anyone knows of any local independent suppliers that might be able to help. I know in our area there is a local appliance business that has been offering free local delivery for example.

Good luck. We're about to see if we can get plumbing supplies for a massive leak in the bathroom. These things always happen at the worst possible time don't they!

Have you tried AO.com? I know there was no pandemic on, but MIL’s freezer had something similar happen on Boxing Day morning and they delivered a new one at 8am the following day.

BikeRunSki · 24/05/2020 08:34

Have you looked at AO? They delivered the next day when our washing machine packed up.

Just checking: that red light isn't one to indicate needing a defrost is it?

SubatomicBleach · 24/05/2020 08:41

No, there's a separate light with a snowflake symbol which I'm presuming is defrost.

I'll take a look at AO, I'd looked at appliances direct and whilst they had some in stock for home delivery tomorrow. They weren't ones that were suitable for us.

Agree with @TossACoinToYourWitcher all the local places here are phone only, free delivery and removal.

Littlebelina · 24/05/2020 08:55

We got a new fridge/freezer from ao recently. Ours started to die at the beginning of lockdown, we got a local firm out but they couldn't repair. It limped on for a while. Think we had to wait 48hrs for the one we wanted.

cocopops · 24/05/2020 08:56

I ordered one from Curry’s last weekend and got it on Friday......

SubatomicBleach · 24/05/2020 09:07

The local facebook group just recommends appliances direct (which to be fair is local to us). I'm limited somewhat by the space where it needs to fit so it might just not be possible to get something on short notice. Just wanted to exhaust all options first.

We ordered a vacuum cleaner from AO a few weeks ago and it was delivered next day.

CottonSock · 24/05/2020 09:11

I bet if you look on Facebook marketplace you'll be able to find a cheaper, even if just temporary.

nitgel · 24/05/2020 09:13

Screwfix/wickes do click and collect maybe for next day ?

ShandlersWig · 24/05/2020 09:13

Do you have a local Euronics shop? Our is open for phone enquires and delivered a freezer same day when ours died a few weeks ago. (1.5 hours actually. Was very impressed).

BillywilliamV · 24/05/2020 09:15

Is the horse fetishist's fare in town??

BillywilliamV · 24/05/2020 09:17

Should of course be fair, you will be showing your age if you recognise the reference!!

Sorry for derail..as you were!

SubatomicBleach · 24/05/2020 10:47

Done some measuring and it looks like we can fit a slightly taller freezer in with a small amount of carpentry which gives us a lot more options. Just trying to mock up whether i'll be able to reach the top shelf!

Try boots appliances, they use AO for fulfilment but you get advantage points so it's like getting free money.

Ghostlyglow · 24/05/2020 14:09

AO do next day delivery but I'm not sure whether to recommend because I got one from them last week when mine broke and it doesn't seem to be working right (there's a thread about it🙄)

loobylou10 · 24/05/2020 14:34

Happened to us last week. The only place I could find for immediate delivery was appliances direct. It was £639 though but a really good freezer.

TheOrigBrave · 24/05/2020 15:14

In your position I would ask neighbours if they could store frozen stuff until you can new freezer - rather than expensive panic buy.

You've reminded me I need to defrost mine.

Sn0tnose · 24/05/2020 15:20

AO have fantastic customer service and can deliver really quickly.

Lynda07 · 24/05/2020 15:21

Very good I would think. Search online and you'll find plenty that will deliver quickly, you may even find one not far away that you can collect if you're able.

Lynda07 · 24/05/2020 16:22

PS: I've just purchased one, it will be delivered in about three days.
