Apple AirPods- real ones

ItchyScratch · 23/05/2020 21:56

My 13 year old daughters number one wish is for Apple AirPods for her birthday.

The cheapest I can find is £130 😱

If you have them can you tell me if they are worth the money?

I know there’s cheaper / knock off versions. But she’s a typical teen who is swayed by the glamour of expensive brands. (Champagne lifestyle on a Lemonade budget springs to mind)

If people were to say how amazing they are then I might feel ok about ‘investing’ in some.

But I will forever be god smacked at the price.

I’ve got the Air Pod pros and they are amazing. However I am 50 and very sensible. How responsible is she? They are small and easily lost/stolen. My understanding is that the originals can be a tricky fit which may be a consideration

Love mine which I got after teenage DD bought hers with birthday money and I wanted some too. Definitely worth it if she can look after them

AngelaScandal · 23/05/2020 22:15

I love mine. I run with them and clean the house without my phone in my pocket. But they were a gift. Not sure I would have paid full price for them

ItchyScratch · 23/05/2020 22:16

I did wonder about the fact they could be easily lost.
However- I think the majority of the time they will be used in the house rather than outside.

Can I ask why they are so much better than any other (cheap!) headphone? - what are their selling points?

i have a cheap version and they are ok, the sound quality on airpods are much much better
the reason i got cheap ones was to make sure id use them and not lose them before shelling out for real ones

starrynight19 · 23/05/2020 22:17

My dd12 got some for Christmas. She uses them everyday and hasn’t lost them.
Although she doesn’t take them out of the house.
Money per wear i would say they have been great value.

ItchyScratch · 23/05/2020 22:17

@Boscoismyspiritanimal

Oh it never occurred to me you didn’t need to have your phone on you. How far away from your phone can you be with them still playing?

Anywhere in the house. They’re all linked to each other. They are v useful when I’m scrubbing !

Paranoidmarvin · 23/05/2020 22:20

Ugh. I bought cheaper ones and they were rubbish. Buy the proper ones. My son has them and never lost them

Overseasmom100 · 23/05/2020 22:20

They're great but they in time get clogged up with ear wax so you need to cleam then with a cotyon bud regularly. I got our at John Lewis as you get a 2 year warrenty

BrigitsBigKnickers · 23/05/2020 22:20

Are they the same shape as the apple earphones? These just don't stay in my ears so I can't see how it would be possible to run with them- they would just fall out!

QuitePolite · 23/05/2020 22:21

I cannot for the life of me get apple earphones to stay in my ears for any length of time, and for that reason I ended up getting some off-brand Bluetooth over ear headphones from amazon. They were only £20 but are easily as good sound quality as my apple earphones.

BelfastNonBlonde · 23/05/2020 22:21

They are just normal earphones like. Nothing that special.
Also they are VERY easily lost / put in the washing machine.
My husband has done this twice and he’s generally pretty responsible with things.

I like Apple ear buds because they fit my ears very well and find them comfortable, but I still use the wired versions.

Fallstar · 23/05/2020 22:26

Mine were a gift. The sound quality is great and worth getting for her if she will take care of them.

But I find the shape of them doesn't suit my ears very well and they start to hurt if I wear them for long periods. One also fell out of my ear when I was working out in the gym.

I bought some inexpensive covers that convert them to an earbud-type shape, which makes them much more comfortable and secure.

Most people don't seem to have this issue though!

TheHighestSardine · 23/05/2020 22:29

The shell is exactly the same shape as the wired version, but the wired versions pop out of my ears while the wireless ones do not - they're stable enough to run with.

They sound audibly better than the wired ones, thankfully. They're still not great, but they're decent enough. Range is up to about two floors, while various non-Apple ones I had before often dropped signal by being on the other side of my head to the pocket I have the phone in...

The Pros are absolutely superb. I would say to anyone who loses their AirPods and goes to buy a new pair - save up longer and get the Pros instead, they're just excellent all round (obvious caveat that they're no better than any other in-ear buds for people who can't wear in-ear buds).

Toddlerteaplease · 23/05/2020 22:36

I've got bose soundsport. They are much better that AirPods. And they fit more securely.

ItchyScratch · 23/05/2020 23:01

Thank you all very much for your replies.

I’m going to get her some Smile

Air Pods fit my ears brilliantly but I can’t wear other brands. I’ve always been able to wear the Apple ones

bigmove2020 · 24/05/2020 08:07

She bought me some for Xmas as a surprise. I didn't think I would use them and they would be the same as my other cheap earphones. Honestly I love them. I use them all the time

Paranoidmarvin · 24/05/2020 12:17

My only problem I have is I put my phone down when I’m listening. You forget this and wonder off. Two mins later your the other side of the building and the music stops playing. 😂

KatoPotato · 24/05/2020 12:19

I love mine. DH and I can have one each to watch something in bed together, and also great for laying in your side in bed with just one in too!

Ulysses · 24/05/2020 12:28

I love mine. The proper Apples ones are paired to your Find My Friends app as well so if you find yourself misplacing them you can have them alarm. I found this out quite quickly as one flew out my hand as I was leaving the gym and was scrambling on my hands and knees trying to find it in the car park!

SassenachWitch · 24/05/2020 13:28

I can say with certainty that they survive going through the washer and dryer Blush
