Defrosted chicken question!

Super boring question but I'm crap at stuff like this and it's only since lockdown I've really started freezing food because it scares me (I know I'm a idiot 🙄).

So I got a pack of chicken breasts out of the freezer around 5pm yesterday for dinner tonight but I now don't need them until tomorrow night.. Can I cook them tomorrow night instead or will I kill us all with food poisoning?! Do they have to be cooked today?

They'll be fine if in date. If not in date then I'd cook them today and re-freeze (can re-freeze if first freeze was raw).

What dish were you going to make?

AlCalavicci · 22/05/2020 08:53

They be fine as long as you didn't leave them on the work top all day long defrosting.

But if you are really unsure about this cook them today and put the back on the fridge for tomorrow or frezzer for whenever .
You can then reheat them once

I want to know what your making with them too >>> looking for inspiration

Wilberforce1 · 22/05/2020 08:59

No not in date, date on them is 30th April but they were frozen a few days before that. I think I'll just cook them this evening to be safe. Not sure what I'm making yet, also need inspiration because I'm so bored of cooking! Maybe a pasta bake or a curry?!

I've actually just checked them properly and they aren't even fully defrosted yet! They have been in the fridge the whole time.

They are fine for a few days in the fridge. Make sure they are in a single layer and they will defrost better. Once you have cooked them they will have several days fridge life or you can freeze them.

dementedpixie · 22/05/2020 09:06

If they havent defrosted properly they will be fine to be left in the fridge defrosting until tomorrow. Should be used within 24 hours of when they have defrosted

Ninkanink · 22/05/2020 09:07

They will be absolutely fine.

Mamadothehump · 22/05/2020 09:15

Like PP said, they need to be cooked within 24 hours of being DEFROSTED which if being done in the fridge like they should, will be fine.

planningaheadtoday · 22/05/2020 11:11

If you are defrosting in a fridge there are no issues, the bacteria wake very slowly in this environment.

As PP said, if you've left them on the kitchen worktop maybe not, as the warmer outer layers will speed up the bacteria.

However, raw chicken honks whenever it's on the turn so you can tell if it's past it's best.

Thanks everyone I'm going to chance it and cook them tomorrow 😬 I'll let you know if I kill anyone (I don't eat meat)!! They were still slightly frozen at 2pm so I think they should be ok.
