Yeah, it seems to have been a week of Bank Holiday here, from what I can see!

Drakeford seems like a bit of a bunny. The other guy - the one who resigned - came across as more intelligent!

Jourdain11 · 23/05/2020 13:11

A bit of a ninny , sorry, not bunny. Autocorrect fail!

BakewellTarts · 23/05/2020 13:20

Anyone got popcorn for todays breifing? I think whichever Cabinet Member is doing it will have an interesting time...even with the doom monerging going on at the moment I think I'm going to watch it.

countrygirl99 · 23/05/2020 13:22

justasking most of my friends are still working Monday to Friday as am I. We just aren't driving to work. I do the supermarket run as DH is an obese 60yo diabetic.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 23/05/2020 13:25

I ordered a barbell and weight plates a couple of weeks ago...the bar came today and the weight plates are being shipped separately. Two non essential deliveries.
I feel like a serial killer.

Littlebelina · 23/05/2020 13:34

Dh earns more than me, due to various breaks due to pregnancy etc I'm further behind in my career (also he is better than me honestly) and my job has more I can do from home. He is FT, I'm PT at moment which makes it easier for me to flex. The bulk of the childcare has fallen on me although DH has been doing all he can. He'd happily do more but there doesn't seem much point whilst my work keep giving me home working. Which is very nice of them but isn't my long term career plan (which they know) and means I will fall behind my peers. I have been forgotten off a few things as well which doesn't help. Worrying about my career in a global crisis seems selfish but I enjoy it and had barely settled back in after maternity.

At least if nurseries reopen I'll only have my eldest to look after and he can work independently (makes it easier for DH if I'm ever to go in as well)

PickAChew · 23/05/2020 13:36

That troll thread attacking @LilacTree1 was a complete dick move. Reassuringly, lots of people agreed as it seemed to have been heavily reported.

Just taken a walk to town and back to get DS1 his regulation sarnies from tesco. Can't stand Starbucks but was pleased to see a queue outside and there were lots more people milling about than there has been for ages.

Biggest dangers of my trip.

Almost tripping over a fallen bit of tree.
Almost being whacked over the head by a low hanging sycamore branch.
Coming out of my duck to almost walk into a very confused bee.

Orangeblossom78 · 23/05/2020 13:39

There's been lots in the press about how women and the young are losers in lockdown but oddly some of MN is in denial. Probably as they are dementors wanting to keep us in lockdown

ilovecardigans · 23/05/2020 13:40

Newsnight last night did a very interesting piece on how women are much more adversely affected by the current situation than men are. It's about 25 minutes in and you can catch it on iPlayer:

www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000jbd3/newsnight-22052020

Laughed when I read that the anti-Sturgeon brigade (getting stronger every day!) are referring to 'Jockdown' instead of lockdown on Twitter.

Thinking of you today lovely @LilacTree1 and hope you are okay.

Weedsnseeds1 · 23/05/2020 13:41

Local pier has just put a nice photo of deck chairs and a "hope to see you again soon" comment.
Followed by howls of outrage that the chairs are too close, the "good work" the council have done in keeping people away is being ruined, the car parks are closed so take the hint...

justasking111 · 23/05/2020 13:44

Re: car parks closed makes you want to carry a pair of chain cutters in the boot to be honest and break them open. One council said they were closed until they had done a health and safety survey on them. Angry

BogRollBOGOF · 23/05/2020 13:46

I hope Lilac comes back on soon.

I can see the logic in going a bit doomy before a bank holiday to deter non-socially distancing crowds. Various villages and beauty spots in my county struggled with crowds last week. Unfortunately feeding the keyboard Dementors is a fairly hidden (mental) health consequence. The extent of secondary health issues won't become apparent until we're properly emerging from the other side of this (be it aggropobia, OCD, GAD, weight gain and associated health risks)

With last night's walk at a beauty spot, there was no worse consequence than walking locally-infact even less. It's been the only walk/run in 2 months where I haven't strategically placed myself to think about distancing. We know the area well and know that it's highly likely to be quiet at that time slot (plus the wind was offputting) I'm not such a fan on any weekend afternoon with sunny weather!

I wish that carparks and toilets are opened up though. It is legal for people to go out, they will do it anyway. Why create a set of additional problems then repeatedly whinge about what can be avoided. These places need business long term and damaging good will is not a good long-term move. Sanitation is pretty important for a preventing a host of other infections!

I'm missing the public toilets in a park that tends to fall around halfway on one of my long run routes. It's normall a very welcome sight. Going au-naturelle is not such an issue on my quiet rural routes.

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 23/05/2020 13:54

Jourdain my heart sank for you on reading your post. I'm sorry. It's bitterly hard that you face more treatment and uncertainty. I'll have my fingers crossed for you and I'm glad you thought of medicating with pizza. Shows what an all round sensible person you are. Sending you a hug from me too.

Thank you to those of you who suggested what I could say to my friend about his comments on the 1918 flu - I was going to and then someone else on FB tackled him and made the points some of you made on here so I stepped back. The guy posted this article in one of his responses and it is fascinating reading. thecritic.co.uk/were-all-in-the-big-numbers-now/ It strongly argues that respiratory diseases commonly only last about 2 months and lockdown is far more of a threat to us than COVID. It has really helped reading it - if the virus has burned through the world and done its damage then people will be less dementor like over the coming months as we see that doing more doesn't result in any spikes in deaths. I am going to cling to that idea. We know that other countries coming out of their lockdowns and going back to school etc. are seeing a decrease in cases still, which is really compelling. Also, if VE Day and people starting to go back to work 2 weeks ago was going to cause us problems, we definitely would be seeing that in the statistics by now. But we aren't. The new cases seem to have been a stable number for the last couple of weeks. Not going down much but not shooting up.

I am hanging in there. I keep getting stress headaches which isn't like me. I'm more tired than normal. I'm sick of this situation and I'm sad coming on here and hearing about how others are struggling too but this thread has been an absolute lifeline. I am planning a trip to the garden centre AND the beach next week because I know how to live. It does help. I saw a friend for a walk this morning and it was just wonderful. It makes such a different seeing someone in the flesh. Skype is no comparison.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 23/05/2020 13:57

That's what I'm clinging to too. I mean all these countries coming out of lockdown haven't had any massive spikes, so there has to be something in it.

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 23/05/2020 13:59

Also LilacTree please come back - you are needed here by us! I'm sorry you came up against a troll - I think it makes you a bit of a celebrity around these parts if someone starts a whole thread about you in all honesty. It's quite an achievement! But I know it must have been very upsetting too.

enjoyingSun · 23/05/2020 14:04

@LilacTree1 can I second please come back.

I do wonder if it was a reaction to you being OP on this thread more than anything else than meant you come under attack.

AgentCooper · 23/05/2020 14:06

Oh the toilets thing is a big issue.

I struggle with anxiety and when I’m in a bad patch (a few recently) my tummy is very unpredictable. As a result I don’t go too far from home with DS on our walks. When I need a long walk most.

@Jourdain11 sending you a virtual hug Flowers

MinnieMountain · 23/05/2020 14:10

I'm sorry to hear your news @Jourdain11. That's really crap.

I took DS to meet up with a friend today. Bumped into another friend and his DC, so at one point there were 5 children aged 3-6 climbing on a willow tree. It was heart warming to see.

thenightsky · 23/05/2020 14:13

Just back from Dunelm... not a single pack of elastic to be had. There goes my mask sewing fun.

SomewhereEast · 23/05/2020 14:23

I'm fascinated by the possibility that a variant of this was already circulating widely in Europe back in 2019. Anecdotal I know, but a cluster of people we know had the same respiratory type illness in our part of Yorks back in December. The symptoms were exactly the same as the 'milder' cases of Covid. DH was wiped out for several weeks and he is never ill. I know the counter argument is that deaths didn't spike over the winter, so I'm guessing not. Although there's speculation that Coronavirus colds could confer some immunity to Covid19, so I guess another less nasty coronavirus variant was circulating widely in December it could have boosted immunity in advance of this one.

KaronAVyrus · 23/05/2020 14:28

There was a horrific virus going round at Christmas time. Half my work (over 200 employees) were off.
I’ve never see DH so ill. I was very concerned that he had pneumonia and sent him to the doctor a couple of times. He said sometimes he felt like he was drowning.
Now it could well have been another virus (I’m not denying that) but I’d love him to be tested.

Pleasedontdothat · 23/05/2020 14:31

634 cases in London in the last two weeks and yet people are still terrified....

Went for a walk in Wimbledon Common - there’s lots of paths deep in the woods where you hardly ever see anyone. There are a few benches here and there which I’ve never seen anyone sit on but have always thought it’s good that they’re there for people who need a rest mid-walk for whatever reason. They’ve been taped up for weeks which I found profoundly irritating as the risk of anyone catching anything from an empty bench in the middle of a forest must have been infinitesimal even at the height of the pandemic. Now the tape has gone, to be replaced with signs saying: ‘Warning! This bench has not been sanitised. Do not share this bench with anyone except a member of your household’. What a colossal waste of effort ...

I’ve absolutely had enough this weekend - I looked through my calendar and everything’s been cancelled - and even if we could go on holiday, we can no longer afford it. There is literally nothing to look forward to.

@Jourdain11 I hope the sickness has gone now. My dad had NHL many years ago - it was shit at the time and the treatment was horrible but he made a really good recovery and lived for another 25 years - he was in his late 60s at the time - and you have youth on your side Flowers

enjoyingSun · 23/05/2020 14:31

There was a reasearcher in France who went back to samples from ICU patients in December and found one with covid-19 www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-52526554 - though I suspect most illness this past winter were the more usual cold and flu viruses still with possible odd clusters like Bradford choir in January.

BakewellTarts · 23/05/2020 14:34

@LilacTree1 please come back.

justasking111 · 23/05/2020 14:38

Six deaths in Wales yesterday.
