I just ate cooked lettuce

I never knew it was a thing and it was lush!

Am on a diet and bored of all my usual salads and was googling. Came across a recipe for chargrilled mini gem. Had it as per the recipe with vinaigrette, feta and chilli flakes. It honestly was one of the nicest things I've ever eaten.

What other fab food things have I been missing out on?

I like beetroot and smoked fish with horseradish

frittata with lettuce and onion is nice.

Raw grated beetroot. In a salad.

Had a flatmate at uni who used to make lettuce soup regularly. I was sceptical until l tried it.

I had a cooked lettuce dish in a lemon sauce in Greece once, it was fab

theluckiest · 21/05/2020 13:30

Oooh, might try that today. I'm looking for more summery things than just salads.

Have you got the recipe OP? Or is it as easy as 'get mini-gem lettuce & chargrill'?

Nigella's chicory and radicchio - she puts goats cheese on it. Bitter and creamy and weirdly nice!

+1 for braised lettuce and peas - one of my absolute favourites

(Cooked / seared cucumber can DO ONE though, however “fashionable” it’s become in fancy menus)

One of my friend ordered whole boiled lettuce with sesame oil in Hong Kong way back. I thought wtf, but when I tried it myself, it was nice. Also lettuce in fried rice is very nice too.

Raw courgette is amazing

bumblingbovine49 · 21/05/2020 13:36

DH made me lettuce soup and another time cucumber soup early on in our relationship . I did wonder at the time if he had some weird thing about cooking salad vegetables [grin[], but it was too early in our relationship for me to make such a comment, particularly as I wanted to see him again

We've have never had them again in over 20 years. I'm not sure why as I remember eating them and being surprised that they tasted quite nice.

Braised lettuce and peas is a delicious classic, I stir cream into mine towards the end of cooking, so perhaps not for you if you are on a diet OP.
