How do I go about getting DS extra support?

DS is 3 and was diagnosed with a speech disorder just before lockdown. He also has some development delays.

I need to ask his nursery for some additional support but I don't know what I'm asking for, is anyone able to explain the process of how you would eventually get to an EHCP?

Is there anything I'd need to do ahead of applying for primary schools for him like talk to the school SENCO?

Not quite the same circumstances but eldest DC was dx with ASD a year before starting reception, so when we were just starting to visit potential schools. We asked to tour schools privately rather than on group open days (most or all schools will accommodate this happily and some don’t even run group open days) so we could talk more freely with the HT or staff member showing us round. When we booked visits, we also flagged the dx and asked to meet the SENCO on the same visit where possible. All bar one could accommodate this request and it was so valuable in helping us make a decision we were really confident in.

There’s also specific preschool-primary transition support in our area from a dedicated LA team, but you’d be best speaking to your individual LA to see what they provide on that front.

I'd ask your nursery. Mine did all the paperwork and observations for the EHCP for my DD. As they had done it before for other children, they knew the best way of writing it up.

Does he already have support via portage in nursery?
